About this listing
Some places and experiences can change how we view the world.
Our nautical themed Wharf Hub is one of those places, and our unique 'voyages' lead us view the world with new awareness.
Home to New Zealand's only community reef building program.
The Wharf Hub with its nautical theme offers comfortable homelike facilities and a feeling of boarding a ship and going on a voyage, only no one gets seasick. The heritage home by the wharf and harbor is complemented by garden displays outlining our seabed enhancement project. There's a community orchard, a ships cat, gardens and boats about too.
'The Wharf Hub' villa itself has a range of bedrooms and sleeping options, even including a decommissioned launch. We can cater for individuals, families or small groups. We offer three grades of 'Fares' - First Class, Second Class and Steerage. Listed here in AIRBNB is the Second Class Fare
'The Wharf Hub' itself is nearly 100 years old and with its native timbers and tall ceilings, it too has an influence on your voyage. The original Shacklock Orion wood stove is useable . The meals (and pizzas) it can cook are superb.
Beds are made up ready for you. Fresh towel included.
The Master's Room (First Class only) overlooks the rivers and out to sea. It has a queen bed with period furniture, table and chairs plus breakfast items. The Upper Deck room can accommodate up to 3 people in single beds, The Sunny Oak cabin room has a double bed and Below Decks with its original wood paneling can also sleep 3. So there's many ways we can accommodate you, your family or your group.
We offer out own 'Treasure Maps' of must see and do things to explore about Opotiki. Plus we run our own quite unique 'voyages' (aka workshops).
With lots that can happen here perhaps you are seeing why it is called a 'HUB'
There's many other unique local activities right on hand. Right outside 'The Wharf Hub' is a free water park offering fun and river swimming. Over the bar is great fishing and further out again is the world's largest open ocean aquaculture venture with off shore active volcano White Island being further out yet again.
Some like to use the opportunity of staying at The Wharf Hub for exploring the isolated and very picturesque East Cape area, Waioeka Gorge (NZ's longest), or take day trips to Whakatane, Rotorua and White Island.
Being also so close to the Opotiki CBD allows you to leave your car at home and take a 5 minute walk to bars, great restaurants, Museum, and explore the historic Opotiki Township on foot.
The kitchen/dining area and deck area are spacious and equipped with radio, CD player, DVD and HD TV, wood stove in Winter, and unlimited WIFI internet. Full kitchen cooking facilities, gas stove, gas hot water, laundry.
Interaction with Guests
Lloyd your host stays on the same property. He is around the property with cleaning, maintenance, hosting and facilitating duties throughout the day.
Guests commonly see the neighborhood as real New Zealand. The town is rich in Maori culture reflecting the majority Maori population. Horses being ridden about town are commonplace, our 50m swimming space is in the river outside. There's no parking meters or wardens anywhere. This is a poor but friendly town.
There's no buses nor even a taxi in Opotiki. Walk, use our courtesy bike, or ask if you need a lift somewhere. There's off street parking for six vehicles on the property.
Other Things to Note
A house now has a new covered deck area which is warm and sunny throughout the year. Other improvements are always being made to restore the character of the home and upgrade your stay experience.
The Wharf Hub provides a smoking restricted environment.
We try and encourage food and drink only to be consumed in the dining area. You are expected to keep things 'ship shape' and leave your room clean.
There is usually fresh fruit, frozen fish and vegetables available for your use. (FREE)
