I had a lovely stay with Kalikia in Oakland. I found the neighborhood charming and I felt very safe. I found her apartment to be charming, uplifting and relaxing. I was in a very stressed place with work, dealing with some major decisions and I found my time at Kalikia's helped me find my center. I am also madly in love with her dog! I can't say enough nice things about my stay. I would definitely stay there again.
I have mixed feelings about my time at Kalikia's. She was very quick and communicative in helping set up my 10-night stay, but when I arrived my first night she seemed tired and distant, and didn't tell me much about the place. The futon you sleep on is about 3 feet away from her working desk, where she was watching a movie. She seemed very nice, but with her working/watching TV at her desk occupying about half of what is the guest room, I felt like I was impeding on her space. Especially for the price, this felt strange.
I left about a half hour into this, and stayed at someone else's house. We didn't speak for 4 days, then I informed her I was stopping\. She was more alert and energetic then, but a violent show (Sons of Anarchy) was still playing on the desk near the bed. I told her I was going to cut my stay short, and obviously would pay for the 4 days since we spoke last, and we hashed out the procedure for me cutting my stay short. She seemed calm and kind-enough given I just told her I was asking for money back. I appreciated that.
In sum: It's a beautiful home, the dog is wonderful, I only stayed about an hour total, but I would say that unless Kalikia is not around, be either very clear about the space you need or intend to only use the place for sleeping. I sort of felt like I was intruding on her space, honestly. She has so many wonderful reviews on here perhaps this is just an isolated incident. Sort of weird for my first airbnb experience, though.
Yes I would say this is one of the strangest hosting experiences I've ever had.
I was actually very sick and had just begun taking antibotics when Paul arrived. He arrived after our original agreed on check in time and he didn't really seem interested in finding out anything about the space or where anything was, and actually left nearly as soon as I gave him the key (about 6min) - saying he was starting to see someone and wouldn't be back that night.
In fact, the longest he stayed was when he came back to return the key, tell me he was going to stay with his new found friend and asked to use my computer to do his change of reservation, which he then utilized for about 30min trying to figure out his Airbnb issues. Which was very odd for me.
It did feel like an invasion of space during the longest period of interaction, especially since the longest he was in my house (that I know of) was when he was supposed to be leaving (about 45min).
I'm sorry he had a feeling of unwelcome, as so many of my guests seem to feel right at home when staying here.
Kalikia (and friends!) were very welcoming. Everything was as described. Ample parking, neighborhood with amenities, right near freeway - easy access, overall great accommodation. Many thanks for everything!
Kalikia was very friendly, respectful, and helpful. She had great suggestions about the area, and we even went out for a few drinks together with her neighbors. I would say it was a good value deal. Nothing luxurious (space-wise), but definitely a good place to crash during transition periods (unless of course you pay for the whole apartment, and then forget what I just said). Kalikia was very mindful of my sleeping hours. She was very kind to be able to host me on short notice. Because of that, I couldn't possibly expect the place to be sparkling clean, but it was still totally fine. Her little dog Mizu is really awesome, energetic, and friendly (especially with guys). Overall the place had good vibes, and Kalikia made me feel welcome. Neighborhood has tons of things to do, and is close to public transportation. Stop searching already and book this place!
Everything about my stay at Kalikia's place went super smoothly. I only spontaneously decided for it but the communication before worked out well. Kalikia was very helpful and flexible concerning my arrival and departure, which helped me a lot.
Her place has a really good vibe and I enjoyed staying there a lot. Her dog is indeed a sweetheart and just makes everyone smile.
It was my first Airbnb experience alone and I am happy that it was with Kalikia!
Kalikia is a good host. Maybe the futon is not confortable. But the location is close from San Francisco, about 20 minutes by train. And the price is not bad. If you want stay just a few days, it will be a good place.
Kalikia is an excellent host -great communications and met me at check in. The deli on the corner was quite nice -best Mac n Cheese ever!
