The Journalist and Writer whose home you will be sharing, along with her young cats... She speaks French, English, Indonesian, some German and Spanish.
As a writer, she privileges quietness and concentration, yet always happy to share 'insider's tips' with you and help in any question about life in Bali.

The Neighborhood

one of the most privileged areas of Bali.
Just 4Km from Ubud.
- Community stairs leading to Ayung River, 100M away,
a protected "GREEN BELT" that acts as a natural lung:
no cars, no bikes, no fumes, no cocks, no barking dogs, no burning garbage.

comes all the way down from the volcano
TREKKING lanes adjacent to the riverbank.
Hindu shrine,
Holly spring (blessed by the local priest),
huge banyan trees,
mysterious vines growing strange fruit,
small pavilions:
great for reading, relaxing, painting, yoga...
hot spot for white water rafting
Bathing area

NEARBY, you'll find local places where to eat - "Made's Warung" offers fresh fish and rice for 25K Rp... the Italian GAYA GELATO (ice-cream parlor ) is 50M away, with tropical fruit sherbets to die (or live) for!
- "Sayan House": 300M away: great food, great views.
There is a food court at "BALI WOOD" (600M away); trendy places where to meet peers and have delicious food, like "Vespa Cafe", "Kopi Desa", "Alchemy", "Bayu's Kitchen" (Live Band) in Penestanan village, and many local warungs for Indonesian dishes all along Jl Raya Sayan.
You'll find local shops, fruit and vegetable markets all along the main road.
Food delivery is available from a wide variety of places (see our folder in unit).
There are large supermarkets (Bintang, Coco and Delta) that provide all you need in terms of food, clothing, toiletry etc.
Nevertheless, we encourage you to support small local businesses as much as possible.

UBUD is a MOOD, as the artistic and spiritual center of this Island of the Gods, with its traditional SPIRITUAL HEALERS, High Priests, Mystic Carvers, painters, sculptors, musicians and dancers, kite makers, mask carvers, furniture, jewelry and fashion designers.
Business people have their production done here.
Lots of beautiful MUSEUMS to visit (ARMA, Neka, Lukisan, Antonio Blanco, Jewelry Rudana, Mask & Puppets, etc).
The area is popular with YOGIS from all over the world who come here to improve their practice or complete a teacher training.
UBUD has become a world-famous hub since Elizabeth Gilbert's book “EAT, PRAY, LOVE" was published, and even more so after the movie featuring Julia Roberts was made.

Many FESTIVALS are hosted here, including Ubud Writers Festival (Oct), Meditation Festival + Film Festival (Nov), Vegan Festival, Bali Spirit Festival with music, dance, and yoga (March).

UBUD has been named “BEST DESTINATION IN ASIA" by Conde Nast Traveler Readers and the President of the World Peace Committee gave Bali the “ISLAND OF PEACE" prize.

The GREEN SCHOOL is now a world reference in terms of their BAMBOO building technique, sustainable standards, and education system. Just 6-8km away lies their campus built on hectares of beautiful land, using a most inventive architecture of bamboo, with a large sustainable organic vegetable garden, a solar power system and much more—this is a MUST SEE!
You should find their website online for a virtual tour, as well as registering for a real tour once you're in town.

Getting Around

SAYAN is just 4km (2Miles) away from UBUD - While it's great to have a good walk around town, having your own transportation is essential to get the most out of your visit.
The preferred method is an automatic SCOOTER. Everyone here drives a Scooter! better than a car in traffic..
Otherwise, you could hire an "OJEK" (Moto taxi) to transport you inexpensively (about 30K Rp/ride, helmet provided).
Some athletic visitors opt for a bicycle (though be advised that it is hot, humid, and hilly! ). Another option is a rented car (+ driver).

We recommend a reputable company for scooter rental. Fair rates, with discounts offered for weekly and monthly periods;
a signed rental document with your personal information is compulsory.
Scooter delivered at yr door along with helmet and rain coat.
60K Rp/day -
Bring your National & International driving licence -
A personal health insurance is Important.

AIRPORT transfer
It is advisable to hire OUR DRIVER so that someone will be there waiting for you, allowing for a smooth arrival specially for new comers, avoiding a waste of time and energy. We work with 5 different drivers.
OUR DRIVERS have a comfortable car with air-con and charge 350K IDR (approximately $29 USD, as of Jan. 2015) for airport transfer.
They have been transporting our guests for years, speak great English, communicate well via mobile phone/(SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN)/ email, safe, reliable, knowledgeable, considerate, will help you carry your luggage, provide you with the keys, show where the lights are...
He will stand at the MAIN EXIT at AIRPORT with a large sign showing a BIRD AND A HEART (our logo), that will be very visible.
Also available for other tours (around the island, to the volcano, temples, hot springs, beach, rice terraces, etc).
Kindly please let us know in advance if you like your AIRPORT transfer.
Please email your complete Flight details ASAP for a better organisation. Thank you!

Other Things to Note

INSECTS AND OTHER CREATURES are part of life in a tropical island like Bali.
Vegetation here is rich, lush, growing fast and with it a whole array of living creatures. Some are quite cute and others are less pleasant. Remember that a ugly hairy caterpillar, given time, will become a shimmering butterfly as large as your hand.
This is not a jungle "ala Disney", so you should be both careful and respectful.
Remember also that most will flee rather than confront you...

MOSQUITOES: while there is no malaria here, dengue fever is a slight possibility—though statistically, it mostly affects people who have been living here for at least three years.
We provide natural essential oils as mosquito repellent. You should protect yourself with round-the-clock essential oils.

TRAVEL LIGHT ( clothes are cheap here), and remember to bring your own flashlight or headlamp.

BE RESPECTFUL OF BALINESE CULTURE and be sure to take your shoes off when entering a Balinese home.
Do not point at people or things with your finger, and do not touch people or things with your foot as well as not showing the sole of your feet to people (these things are considered very rude).
You should give and receive things only with your RIGHT HAND, whenever possible, and always smile...
People here will smile a lot and rarely say “NO."

whenever attending a ceremony, be sure that you are NOT bare shoulders/chest, avoid wearing short pants or Bermudas.
Men should wear a sarong and a SAPUT (smaller sarong) on top, with its strings tied at the waist meant to 'separate the pure from the impure' as is the tradition here.
Women should wear a sarong with a sash (scarf) at the waist for the same reasons. As a top, women should wear a KEBAYA (lacy balinese style blouse), or a plain long-sleeved shirt, and hair should be knotted into a bun. Menstruating women are not allowed on temple grounds.
Bringing an offering (tjanang) with you is always welcome; you can get them from any local warung (family stall) for a tiny fee .
Observe the Balinese people and do the same as they do.
Women usually sit with women and men sit with men, please do so unless you are with a Balinese friend of the opposite sex, it's ok then to sit together.
Never stand higher than a priest, and do not stand on a platform where everyone is sitting. Do not use flash lights when photographing a priest, always ask permission to make photo (a simple gesture is enough).

We believe in responsible, mindful, educated travelers.

Our main & only rule?   ~;+)    mindfulness IS happiness     ~;+)

— Compulsory, upon arrival: a hard copy of each passport (including children) for Police declaration, for all foreigners
(sorry, no Xerox machine, no printer at our office...).
- SPRING MINERAL WATER, - no fluorides -, 20L jug dispenser: please settle 25K Rp upon arrival (leave payment inside on your table, for the House Keeper)
- BREAKFAST: Provided by us, - self service -, consists of:
• Tea, Bali grown Coffee, creamer, Sugar, (+ portions of Cereal Mix and Jam), Bread, & “Welcome Fruit Basket" on arrival -
• For any EXTRA FOODS :
Kindly please ask us a few days prior arrival date. Our House Keeper will do the shopping, charged at local price.
- "MINI BAR" : Snacks and Drinks in your fridge, to be settled in Cash RP, following marked prices. Leave your payment on the table inside (for our House Keeper) Thank you.

-+- For all your TRANSPORT needs and any other requirements, use our document, very easy and useful
(provided in "BASICS - HOUSE MANUAL" and in your 'ITINERARY" sent to you by AirBnB after yr Reservation is done)

Please note: We are happy to assist you, however we are not up to the local Tourism Office or a travel agent.
We are a small family business, offering Accommodation as our first focus.
Kindly first explore & research by yourself online and in any Guide-Book about Bali,
draw a rough list/route of what suits you, get back to us. We then send you this useful document, takes one minute to fill in, helps all parties involved get organized ahead of time, particularly in ‘High Season'.
In this Document please mention any need:
- Transfer: Airport OR from / to any place in Bali
- "OJEK" taxi-Moto (if you don't want to drive)
- Tours, Volcano trekking, rafting, ‘DownHill Cycling', Temples, Rice Terraces, water falls, Bamboo Trail, art, yoga classes, "Spirit Journeys" (traditional Balinese spiritual healers, High Priests, Purification Rituals, Hidden Temples, Soulful Tarot reading...) .
Please register ahead of time
- We have 2 bicycles (30K/Day)
- SCOOTER Rental: We recommend a reputable company. 60K Rp/day, home delivery with 1-2 helmets and raincoats. Allows freedom and a great way to explore the area!
- for on-site Massage, Extra foods, Spirit Journeys, etc: please also mention it in the document.

Mindfulness is about respect and consideration of others and of the environment
Please share our ECO-FRIENDLY approach:
- Switch OFF lights and fans before going out (3 speeds: please check)
- Be conservative with your use of Water, a very precious resource here.
• We RECYCLE Metal cans & glass bottles: keep them separate from other garbage
- We support the Association “Say NO TO PLASTIC!":
Use our Mineral Water from the dispenser rather than buying single-use plastic bottles;
Use a FABRIC BAG (provided) better than bringing back more plastic bags, hard to dispose of..
Our soap (hands, kitchen) and cleaning materials are diluted. We buy concentrate in soft pouches to keep packaging minimal.
Diluting soapy products is meant to limit toxic, harmful waste in our homes as it runs down to ground water, rivers and streams.

Smoking is allowed outside only. Please dispose your cigarettes in an ashtray.
Our place is located near by rice fields, jungle, woody rivers, coconut / bamboo groves, ravined streams… this is what our Guests love…
Insects and animals can be expected, most are charming, others annoying, some can be potentially dangerous.
This is not a “Jungle-Book a la Disney": Please be both careful and respectful.
Keep all foods in sealed containers -- or inside the fridge
Avoid leaving crumbs and food scraps; keep organic garbage in tightly knotted bags.
This will prevent insects and animals to be attracted. Thank you for caring.
We have also printed a spiraled "BOOKLET" available in each house offering useful information: take a minute to read it. Tx

PETS: We love them. Yet we reserve the right to allow them on the property. Kindly please talk to us first. We have a cat who might come visit you. In perfect health, clean, dewormed, desexed, fully vaccinated, identified with a collar & followed by a veterinarian on a regular basis. Our guests love them. If you are allergic to cats, please just feel free to chase them away: they understand all foreign languages!

Our place is very safe. Nevertheless, we advise our guests to act in a responsible way:
Lock your door & Main Gate, close your windows whenever going out -
keep your valuables inside a lockable cabinet, better than in plain sight -
OPEN FLAMES (candles, incense, oil burners, gas cooker..) :
never leave them unattended for obvious safety reasons, for yourself & others..
make SURE to keep them on a metal/glass plate, away from the wall, curtains etc.
WATER HEATER is already set up: please do not change it -
if need be, contact us asap, our Maintenance man will do it.
- Bring a FLASH LIGHT with you if you will be coming or going after dark.
Be aware that pathways and steps can be slippery. It's a tropical island! Moss, mold, rain, water from rice fields etc, can be expected
- Bring with you
(we feel all this section goes without saying, but would like to mention it anyway).
For extra safety, our place is under video control -
Please read also our “Driving tips" section here.

• Any broken/damaged items should be replaced or compensated by its equivalent value before leaving the place.
- Books, DVDs, maps, good addresses, brochures are available for you:
Before check out: please put them back for others to enjoy.
- Our beddings are in very good state. Stained mattress, pillows or cushions will be charged accordingly.
- No extra guests are allowed in the House unless requested in written, ahead of time. In any case, this accommodation is for ONE PERSON only, a SOLO TRAVELLER. For TWO ppl: see our other listings in "Other things to note" section, all links provided
- Lost KEYS  are charged 200K Rp.

ELECTRICITY, Water, Internet service: while these are all currently active in the listing, from time to time there can be a lapse in their accessibility due to the more primitive infrastructure of services on the island (remember, this is Bali!);
nothing can be done about a lapse in service and does not constitute a valid reason for canceling with the expectation of a refund. We appreciate your understanding regarding this.

The house is located in Sayan, 4Km away from UBUD.
NOT right in the center of town, just outside, surrounded by nature.
We mention DISTANCE in Kilometers, an objective measure - rather than in terms of time, subjective to your own driving speed, current traffic, road repairs, sections of streets cordoned by local security due to ceremonies or processions, etc
Walking is left to your appreciation, but remember: Bali is tropical, hot, humid, hilly, dogs might bark at you…
Reason why we recommend you have your own vehicle / transport.
Everyone here drives a Scooter! Or use an “Ojek" (taxi-moto).
In high season, obviously, one more car adds to traffic..
But all up to your decision.

For your own safety.
Responsible ways of driving around:
strap on your helmet, wear closed shoes, sleeved tops, trousers (rather than flip-flops, shorts, singlets..).
Wear gloves, sun glasses, have a map at hand, a smart phone with a mapping device;
driving license, personal insurance data, copy of your passport / visa with you, just in case.
Keep your valuables under the saddle; Keep your helmet with you after parking.
These recommendations are of course entirely up to you.

All our houses are GPS referenced: see in your “Itinerary" and "House Manual".

- ADDRESS, location, landmarks, distances, TEL CONTACT NRs, keys, WIFI Password:
communicated to confirmed Guests via the "ITINERARY" and in the "Basics-House Manual", within your listing.
SAVE the infos, Keep them with you at all times, thank you.

We recommend to book your transport with us,
whether you arrive in day time, or later than 4PM (Staff then off) —
Yet, of course it is entirely up to you.
— Important: AirBNB Hosting does not offer services like a regular Hotel:
no 'Reception desk' open 24/7;
- Our employees have a Schedule to be honored
- Staff do not live on-site.
Also note:
- BALI does not have street names & sign posts at every junction...
- Houses rarely have clear visible numbers;
- Even and odd numbers (as in Western countries) are not a concern here…
- Some streets show twice the same number... or Nr 24 is followed next door by Nr 103 .... ~ ;-)
- Street lights are not always operating properly at night -
A driver found in the southern part of Bali? Experienced by one Guest:
“Cheap deal in Kuta turned out a "cheat deal", taxi was unable to locate the house.."
Our driver's fee is the same as any other taxi: about 350K Rp (as of Jan 2015) from Airport to Ubud, 1Hr15/1h30 drive -
- Cell phone signal and internet can be "patchy" and unreliable -
Therefore we apologise if not being able to give immediate answer to calls/SMS-(website hidden)/emails;
- If in need, contact ANY of the given numbers, or try again later.

- Any problem while in transit to the destination, delays, etc:
please CONTACT ASAP OUR DRIVER -- and ANY Nr provided in the "House Manual" & in your “Itinerary" - Cancellation of the Driver's services THREE Hrs before scheduled time will be charged as he has saved his agenda for you and refused other clients.

Our friendly “wink" to our valued guests:
• We always do our very best to serve you, yet mistakes are possible, we are humans..
• Kindness is key to solve most issues  … ^+^ …
- Bali is on a slow pace, not up to Western criteria.
Please be considerate and avoid  "last minute" requests.
Balinese people do not enjoy being 'stressed out"  ~:+}
• We apologise for not being able to process late notice requests.

Thank you so very much for caring
 Welcome & enjoy Ubud!
