This beautifully appointed studio apartment with its open plan layout and high ceiling exudes Loft Style living and space. Soft shades of grey blend with raw concrete, steel, wood and glass where the windows are paintings of lush green coastal forest and the bright blues of the Indian Ocean, river estuary and swimming pool. Located on the bustling Dolphin Coast the Chalet offers the ideal stay for people visiting on business for vacation or traveling through KwaZulu-Natal via the airport.

The space
The Chalet is less than 15 minutes’ drive from King Shaka (Durban) International Airport and central to the hub of Durban and the bustling Dolphin Coast. Boasting a fully equipped kitchen, satellite TV, free Wi-Fi and a comfy King sized bed dressed in crisp white pure cotton linen.
The Chalet is one of three separate and completely private apartments at the Villa La Mercy, set elevated at the back of the property overlooking the sparkling courtyard swimming pool. The swimming pool is accessible for all guests staying on the property. Night time use is by discretion so as not to disturb other guests. The parking is behind access-controlled gates right next to the Chalet, offering easy access. The apartment doors slide away to the open sheltered balcony with a table setting to enjoy the sea and estuary views. Off the balcony at the back is a protected garden area with a braai. Open plan is the style you must feel comfortable with as even the shower is open to the apartment. Please note there are cats on the property should there be any allergy concerns.

La Mercy, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

La Mercy is a charming seaside village steeped in the colourful Indian culture and history. Hemmed between lush sugar cane fields and the endless Indian Ocean, the Village is situated on the Dolphin Coast between Umhlanga and Ballito, approximately 25 kilometres north of Durban, home to the busiest harbour in Africa. From La Mercy it is relatively quick to get to Durban’s Shaka Marine World, the International Convention Centre and the various sport stadiums.
La Mercy overlooks the Indian Ocean and extends northwards from the Umdloti River along the shoreline. This beautiful section of sandy beach has a shallow intertidal zone where the low tides form a myriad of rocky inshore pools. The coastal waters are rich in marine life providing endless shore fishing opportunities and great offshore ski boat and paddle ski fishing. Walking along the beach you will almost always be entertained by spectacles of dolphins playing in the surf and the whales breaching in season. For the more active bring your fat bikes and ride the endless beaches north to Ballito or south to Durban.
The river mouth opens to the sea when the rains come but when the mouth is closed a wide deep lagoon is formed, ideal for stand up paddle boarding, canoeing and kitesurfing. The estuary is lined with mangrove forest, which is home to an abundance of water fowl and resident Fish Eagles, making it a bird watchers paradise.
We don’t provide for activities but we can certainly point you in the right direction, so bring along all your toys as there are opportunities galore to play with them all.
With easy access to a number of big five game reserves plus the World Heritage Sites of the beautiful iSimangaliso (St Lucia) Wetland Park in the north and the majestic uKhlahlamba (Drakensberg) Mountains in the west, La Mercy is an ideal springboard to explore this remarkable and diverse Province of KwaZulu-Natal.

Where I went to school: Durban High School
As a kid growing up my parents had a beach cottage at Sheffield Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast. This was the glue that held our large family together for the many years to come. Endless days on the beach swimming, surfing, diving and fishing, the things memories are made from. Later I moved to Umdloti Beach, a wonderful small village with incredible beaches and gregarious lifestyle. I am a keen paddle ski fisherman and Umdloti is a dream section of the ocean to paddle. Over the past year I have landed Queen and King Mackerel, Dorado, Yellow Fin Tuna and Sailfish on my ski directly in front of the apartment I host. My business is hotel and game lodge development and management. I love people and travel, wildlife, the sea and the mountains, food, cooking and entertaining.
