If you’re looking for an authentic experience living as a local in the very heart of Barcelona, come and stay at our little home in the city’s most popular neighbourhood, El Born. Aside from the trendy shops, restaurants and modern transportation, very little has changed over the years. From the small winding streets to the large squares where people go for lunch or dinner, El Born is undoubtedly the best place to spend your holiday in Barcelona.
Just a stone’s throw from the stunning 14th century Santa Maria del Mar church, our apartment is perfectly located. You have the main thoroughfare in the neighbourhood, Passeig del Born, (an old jousting ground) right around the corner, so you are literally in the heart of everything the moment you step out of the door. Within five or ten minutes, you can walk to the beach, the port, the Ramblas, and the beautiful Ciutadella Park. You also have dozens of bus stops (including the tourist hop-on, hop-off bus), three metro stations and the international train station Franca within a 3 minute walk.
Our apartment is located on one of the most historical streets in the neighbourhood, where the old carriages would enter on to the Passeig del Born, carrying the royal family before a jousting match. Translated into English as “Glass Street”, it was home to many of the city’s glassworkers in medieval times. It is a pedestrianised street so other than a little noise from the bars at the weekends; it is generally very quiet for such a central location.
The apartment is on the sixth floor of a 200 year old building, with no lift. Personally, we find that those 2-minutes of exercise climbing the 105 steps is a welcome relief after indulging in all the amazing tapas and wine from the nearby restaurants, but this is something to be sure about before booking.
With a total space of 45m2, the size is very typical of apartments in the city centre, and big enough to comfortably accommodate two people. It has a main area consisting of the living room, double bedroom and dining space/entrance hall, which can be segmented by a system of curtains and blinds to create smaller, more private spaces, or left as one big open-plan space. We have designed it in such a way that you can choose! (Please note that the bedroom is not a separate room!) There is a private terrace of 4m2 which comes off the living room, where you can sit out and dine or relax with a good book and a glass or two of Sangria in the evenings. There is also a fast and secure WIFI connection.
The kitchen is a separate area from the main space and comes fully-equipped with ample cooking facilities and everything you need to cater from home, including a washing machine which you are welcome to use. The bathroom is extremely small but perfectly formed – a 1.5m2 wetroom which consists of a shower, toilet and sink. Again, this is very typical of apartments in the medieval heart of Barcelona, and we lovingly call it ‘The Shed’!
Another short climb of around 30 steps and you will reach the rooftop terrace which has the most spectacular panoramic views over the whole of the city of Barcelona. As the building is one of the highest in the area (hence so many steps!), the views are unobstructed so you will have plenty of privacy to lie in the sunshine.
The apartment is adorned with beautiful, original floor tiles which are over 100 years old, and it has been designed around an organic garden theme, with a mixture of new, vintage and up-cycled furniture. We recently renovated the whole apartment and the fascia of the entire building has also just been restored, with new doors and windows added.
As your hosts, Chris (airbnb user 493394) and I (Sarah) are here to look after you and can provide you with all the information you need on where to go and what to do during your stay. We provide all the latest city magazines so you know what's happening while you are here and to make you feel at home, we even throw in a few essentials such as freshly baked bread, milk, tea, coffee... and Spanish wine! :)
Sarah's flat was absolutely perfect for us. It's in a great location, central to many parts of the city and close to many wonderful places to eat and drink. The apartment itself is very charming and has a lovely terrace and bright sitting area. It is a steep climb but you get used to it, and it helps you rationalize why it's okay to have eaten to portions of patatas bravas in one day :) Sarah went out of her way to make sure we were comfortable and was available if we had any questions during our stay. We would definitely come back.
Sarah was a perfect host and her apartment is exactly what we wanted. Tucked into the heart of El Born, it's surrounded by great food and bars and people. We rented bikes for a day and easily reached Sagrada Familia in one direction and the beach/esplanade in the other.
Ask Sarah for her list of recommendations and you can't go wrong. You can also walk to the El Gotico neighborhood for more great bars and street scenes.
To anyone who wants to experience Barcelona's old town in an apartment decorated with wonderful attention to detail and a hostess who is incredibly lovely and generous with her knowledge of the area, this flat is perfect. We will definitely stay there again should we return to Barcelona.
To anyone still deciding where in Barcelona to stay, this is the place. The location, gorgeous flat and associated terrace made our stay. Be prepared for the steps to get up to the apartment. But when you're up on the terrace having breakfast in the sun in the heart of the old city, it is well worth it.
Do not hesitate, if this flat is available, book it. The streets around this apartment are magic all throughout the day and come alive at night.
Thank you Sarah - we had a couple of unforgettable & nice days! The flat is a cozy little home away from home and is exactly as shown on the pics. Very nice decorated, clean, balcony & rooftop are just spectacular. El Born is a vibrant neighborhood with many bars, restaurants and spots - although we slept with windows wide open, it was not loud at all. Volveremos!!
We had a wonderful stay in Sarah's tasteful apartment in the heart of el born.
From her place we could explore the numerous shops and restaurants in el born, but also walk to the beach and to the gothic quarter.
It is a bit of a walk to get up the numerous stairs (106 steps to be precise), but it is worth the walk, because what awaits you is a nice and bright simple and tasteful apartment with a bedroom and sitting area a little kitchen and a tiny bathroom.
Sarah is a great host that will make sure you will get a warm welcome and all information you need. If we come back to Barcelona we will definitely go for one of Sarah's apartments again.

Sarah was very welcoming and friendly, and the flat was full of light, very clean and lovely decorated. The building was 300 years old and staying there was definitely a special and rememberable experience for us. The location was just perfect. It's in the heart of the Born district, you can walk to all the famous sites of Barcelona...Even the Sagrada Familia! Thank you so much Sarah, we were happy to be at your flat:)
We had great comunication with Sarah, and she met us at the flat and showed us in. It is 105 steps up but worth it for view and location. The roof terace is stunning and the flat had everything we needed. The location was great. Sarah sent us a good list of her recomendations and we eat well due to this.
We recomend as a fun place to stay for a long weekend..
The roof terrace in particular was fantastic, brilliant location in a central, lively spot but still very peaceful. Sarah was very helpful and welcoming. Would definitely recommend staying here!
Sarah was a lovely host, very welcoming and gave us lots of very useful tips. The apartment was perfect for us. Small but beautifully decorated with lots of character. The location was excellent and as long as you could cope with the stairs, I have no doubt you would find the place very charming. We really enjoyed our stay! I would try and stay here again if we returned to Barcelona.
We loved this apartment in the busy El Born area of Barcelona, it is a little haven, in the centre of things but still quiet. Sarah was very friendly and gave us plenty of information about the local area, we did eat in the restaurant she recomended around the corner, and had some of their cured ham which was a treat. We loved Barcelona and will definately be back!
