This place was a nightmare. I seriously cannot figure out how it has so many positive reviews. I really don't understand. How to describe our lodgings of April 25 and 26 in the lakeside city of Castel Gandolfo, Italy? First, it is very difficult to find, on the tiniest of lanes (barely wide enough for one vehicle. We finally found the place, a huge mansion in a neighborhood of mansions. We were greeted by the owner’s adult son. He showed us up the two flights of stairs to our apartment. As we entered, he went into a side room and I saw a huge insect run along the floor and he quickly stepped on it. I was concerned that it might be a cockroach, but when I inspected the remains later it was merely a giant brownish-red millipede. Still, not very comforting. The entire apartment smelled of musty, old, greasy, nastiness. There were numerous spiders, large gnats, and a few little other creepy crawlers that I could not identify. We checked all the beds for bed bugs first and were relieved to find them relatively clean and bug-free. But it was small comfort. There were cobwebs in the corners of the ceilings. Oh, I forgot to mention—as the owner’s son was showing us the apartment he mentioned that the water was non-potable. Yup. We couldn’t drink the water, we couldn’t brush our teeth using the water, we couldn’t wash our fruits and vegetables with the water…He did give us a liter of water (frizzante, of course) which was slightly helpful.
As I forlornly brushed my teeth with frizzante water, I looked out the window to the neighbor’s home. It was like a resort—beautifully maintained mansion, perfectly manicured lawns, a beautiful swimming pool, fancy yard lamps casting light over the festivities. Our yard, on the other hand, was strewn with random pieces of building materials, hoses, etc. and a 2/3 empty swimming pool with greenish/brownish nastiness that MIGHT have been water.
Everything stunk of mustiness and age. I actually placed an article of my own dirty clothing over the pillow because I believe my dirty clothing was cleaner than the pillow.
Despite all this, we managed to have a peaceful night’s sleep.
We spent the next day away from the apartment as much as possible. For our 2nd night, we slept well knowing we could leave soon. I never met the host. I'm sure she is a lovely person (based on the many positive reviews) but I simply cannot understand how she has the gall to charge $140 per night for such a smelly, dirty place with NO drinkable water. It's insane. NEVER stay here.
We got to Giuseppina's house very late. All the shops in the neighborhood were closed and we were so hungry. Giuseppina gave us all the ingredients to make a supper. She's very nice and warm person. The house is close to Ciampino Airport. It has beautiful view from the terrace. I recommend it to everyone.
Przyjechaliśmy do domu Giuseppiny bardzo późno. Wszystkie sklepy w okolicy były zamknięte, a my byliśmy bardzo głodni. Giuseppina dała nam wszystkie składniki, żebyśmy mogli zrobić sobie kolację. Jest bardzo miłą i ciepłą osobą. Dom jest blisko lotniska w Ciampino. Ma piękny widok z tarasu. Polecam wszystkim.
Località molto tranquilla, ideale per il relax e facilmente raggiungibile in automobile.
Giuseppina was like the Italian Mom we never had, but always wanted. Caring to the Nth degree to make sure we had everything we needed and that we were safe and well fed. She even fed us on several occasions! Not a typical Air BnB stay, but one that was very welcomed and enjoyed by every aspect of our beings.
The place is in a unique location itself in the mountains south of Rome, with a beautiful lake about a 10 minute walk away. As we discovered on our visit, this is where the Pope has a home for his summer getaways. It is also close to public transit which can get you right into central Rome in just under an hour, one train ride away.
The place is exactly as the pictures show it. Not too fancy, but good value for the area, and as mentioned, the uniqueness of the experience being hosted by Giuseppina and her sister was one we are so glad to have had on our travels.
Grazie per una grande esperienza, Giuse!
Wonderful all good, the family are family....we had the top floor for 2 months, my husband being 6'2" tall got used to ducking the sloping ceiling line so as not to knock himself out after the first few days. Left in peace and then help when needed language barriers aside our time together was great.
The reservation was canceled the day before arrival. This is an automated posting.
