Guests reviews;

David & Hannah said "Leon and Elana were gracious and charming hosts and our time with them was the highlight of a long tour of southern Baja. If you're looking for good surf, quiet beaches, tasty meals, general tranquility, and a picturesque place to rest your head at night ... look no further."

Cory said "I have never been as relaxed on vacation as I was while staying at Elena & Leon's place. Each morning after a walk to the surf we had a delicious breakfast prepared by Elena, while dinners became an opportunity to converse over good tequila. Leon & Elena are well-read, open-minded, and definitely contributed to our experience in Baja. While one can ignore civilization at this remote slice of paradise, the palapa and main house are completely solar powered and, believe it or not, also offer high-speed wireless internet."

Guest Access

The palapa is a separate and private dwelling, about 30' from the main house, and there's an outdoor(but private) shower behind the main house, which is open at all times. There is also a 'dry toilet', about 40' from the guest-hut, and the main house is open for free coffee and drinking water between set hours. WiFi is included in the rental, and can usually reach the guest-hut, but if not, it is available in, or near to the main house.

Interaction with Guests

With a day or so advance notice, breakfast is available until noon, as well as lunches and and/or dinners, at very reasonable prices.

The Neighborhood

The guest-room is at our home, where we have lived for over 25 years. We love our hood, which is a pleasant mix of Mexican ranchers & fishermen, and local gringos, surfers and other oddballs. It's a generally quiet and off the beaten path place - but there's usually always something going on not too far away, if you're looking for more adventure. Whether it's a day in town for the weekly art walk, or a snorkeling trip up to Cabo Pulmo(about a 1.5 hrs. drive along the coast), or just dinner and a beer down the road at 'Zac's Bar & Grill'(15 min. drive)... or if you're here in winter/spring, you might catch 'Cinema in the Sand'(which is a weekly movie night on the beach...with free popcorn!).

Getting around

There is no public transport here, so if you think you might want to do a wider range of exploration, a car rental might be recommended. That said, there is almost always someone heading into, or back from town, who would be willing to offer a lift. If you're not renting a car, we can usually also find someone to give you a lift to or from the airport, at a more reasonable price than going with a taxi. Just let us know and we'll see what can do.

  • We had a wonderful stay in Alicia's little bungalow. We loved the location so much! It was very peaceful (for L.A.!) since it's so close to Elysian Park. The view on the downtown was amazing too. The little bungalow is very charming and well equipped, especially the kitchen.

Yes, the parking can be tricky, but once you know how to park your car, it's easy, especially if your car is small. There is also plenty of street parking for what we saw.

Alicia was an amazing host. She welcomed us with a bright smile and gave us so many great food recommendations. We felt at home and we truly enjoyed meeting her.

  • Alicia's apartment was very comfortable. We had work to do while we were in LA, so appreciated the nice big table to work on. As she says, there's a steep hill, but it didn't stop us from walking the short distance to Chinatown and the Metro.

  • Alicia's house is an LA dream spot. It's not because her house was my local refuge while my apartment building was being fumigated or because she generously allowed me to bring my cats along -- it really is a perfect spot if you're looking for a very LA experience in a cool neighborhood with easy access to just about anywhere you'd want to go. The location is super close to downtown or the heart of Echo Park and Silverlake, and there's no shortage of fun stuff close by. The house is fully stocked with every convenience (espresso/coffee machines, toaster, oven/range, small fridge, even a tiny washing machine!), so you can decide if you want a fast or slow morning or evening. Even though the house is close to Sunset Blvd., it's very quiet. Parking is plentiful on-street or in the reserved spot. Alicia is super easy to work with and communicative. What's not to like?! Thank you so much Alicia! You made a wild week a lot more bearable.

  • Alicia is an amazing host! She is very helpful and so so sweet. I stayed long term in the Bungalow - almost a month. Overall the experience was great, but there were a few things that make a long term stay a bit difficult. For a short term stay its perfect. The bathroom is very small and a bit old. There is very little closet space. The heater is in the living room and if you're cold it takes a lot of time to heat up the bedroom. Other than those things the place is fantastic. I love Alicia's style, and its a very cozy place. The neighbors are all nice (didn't see them much) . The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need to cook a meal. There is an adorable sitting area outside with a couch and chairs. It is half a block from an entrance to Elysian Park, Beautiful! I would recommend staying here to anyone and everyone!

  • We stayed here for almost 3 weeks in February 2014.

Host : Alicia was wonderful. Friendly, helpful, informative and responsive.

Apartment: very charming place with a lot of character. This feels like staying in someone's home rather than an empty apartment.

The standard of the actual apartment is fine. Not so modern, but everything worked and we were comfortable there for the period we stayed.

Location : it's on too of a VERY steep hill so if you're planning to walk around keep that in mind. You're 2 mins from Sunset Blvd, and I regularly walked to downtown from there which took about 30 - 40 mins. There's fast food, and a grocery store within 5 mins walk and you're close to Silver Lake, Echo Park, Dodgers Stadium and Elysium Park. Also, China Town is 10 mins walk away.

All in a non-pretentious, value for money apartment for 2 - 4 people with a great host.

  • I really enjoyed staying in Alicias place. Friendly and cool neighbours. Her house is a bit rough around the edges but is cool for that reason. Would stay again.

  • I had a pleasant stay at Alicia's bungalow. Location can't be beat: DTLA 7 minutes, Los Feliz 5 minutes, Silver Lake roughly 10-15 Pasadena 20!
Parking was a little tricky as there are many cars parked tightly and angled to share spots off the steep driveway but a reserved parking space seems to be like gold in LA.
As the bungalow is from the 20's, it's got a couple quirks here and there but overall it is very charming and has a lot of character. If only those walls could speak! I loved the small patio out front with the loungey day bed and chairs. Definitely something to look forward to laying down on and looking at the downtown skyline after a long day in traffic.
Alicia was away but she made a few attempts to make sure everything was okay and was even provided a house manual with instructions for keys, cleaning up, etc. I only wish I got to meet her! She seems like a very caring and kind host.

  • Staying at Alicia's was wonderful. She accomodated our group at the last minute and we were so thankful. The apartment is really well situated, it's really easy to get a lot of places - Chinatown, Downtown, Elysian Park, Sunset Junction, etc. - all in no time at all. It's really a perfect place for someone visiting the city as long as they don't mind a couple of hills.

    January 2014
  • While we didn't meet Alicia, she was friendly in her communication with us, and the place was beautiful! We couldn't have asked for a more charming cottage, and the location was perfect for walking around Echo Park.

About me / About you: ***************************** Me: I'm fairly creative and run my own business and I am health conscious. I work hard but also have a social life. I prefer a clean house but can be messy at times in my own room and around my desk area when life gets busy (though I do try to keep this contained). I am a generally cheerful person and enjoy celebrating this world's beautiful things, while remaining sedulous in the strive for melioration. I like to bike, run, read, work, laugh, cook, eat, question authority, talk to strangers on the bus, and see and hear live music. I am a clown, a romantic, a philosopher, and a maniac...maaaaniac on the dance floor (order changes according to situation). My origins lie in NYC but I've been growing up all over the place, with recently 20+ years in Europe and the U.K.***************************** I try to live as sustainably as is possible in the big city, and am an avid supporter of bike and public transport use, and do not own a car. YES...contrary to popular belief, this IS quite possible in LA! ***************************** I also volunteer at The LA Homeless Services Authority. ***************************** You: Are pleasant and easy to be around, tidy and have Eco habits or are open to a little adapting.*** Most importantly, you are a kind, considerate, and conscious individual.
