In the best mushroom picking forests of south Estonia, there is a tiny house. At first, it may seem that it has no amenities – there is no electricity or internet, water comes from the well, the house must be heated with wood and the toilet is outside. But actually, this little house has all the amenities you need for a peaceful retreat – silence, solitude, beautiful nature, a warm fireplace and starry nights. And most importantly – work and the worries of everyday life can’t reach you here!

The space
Nedsaja Metsamaja (which means foresthouse in Nedsaja village) is a good place for a couple, family or smaller group. It is perfect for 3-4 guests but there are sleeping places for a maximum of 6 people (one sofabed and two double mattresses) and the possibility to camp outside. It has a gas stove, kitchen equipment and all the basic essentials (towels, bed sheets, soap and toilet paper). There is no shower but you can wash with well water heated on the stove or just swim in the pond.
The foresthouse is private, but nearby there is lively village life. Small Nedsaja village has many happy and enterprising young families living here in the forests. So on the village road you may meet a gang of village children, musicians, goat farmers, friendly village dogs or, on quieter days you may see no one at all. A shortice little walk away is a scenic little village with a swimming pond, village house and playground where people come together on bigger holidays to celebrate.

A shortice little walk away is a scenic little village with a swimming pond, village house and childrens playground where people come together on bigger holidays to celebrate.
From the village centre, the road takes you to the Mustoja landscape protection area of pine forests and hiking trails, where big roads and human settlement are left behind. The forests nearby are good for hiking and berry or mushroom picking. Under the forests of Nedsaja lies exciting history. Only 100 hundred years ago in this area were Estonian military training camps. When you go hiking you may find foundations of once glorious military houses or a shooting range over grown by nature.
The foresthouse is located in a very unique cultural region called Setomaa. It is known by its polyphonic singing tradition seto leelo (inscribed in UNESCO world heritage list), fascinating traditions, rich culture and beautiful nature. Seto people have managed to keep their culture, language and togetherness living on the edge of two worlds on the Estonian/Russian border.
To get to know more local culture, history and nature you could invite a local naturguide, accordionist and historian Toomas Valk. Toomas has been elected best accordionist of Setomaa 6 years running and he is also the former Nedsaja village leader. He can take you to the best places in the area of interesting history and unique nature. He can tell stories about local people and life, village history and local traditions or bring you joy with local accordion music.
