If you are up for an experience of a bit of heaven on earth -- and you are willing to take a pilgrimage down a gravel road to one of the most serene and beautiful places in Tuscany - this is the place for you. We traveled outside of Pienza and arrived at a 17th century farmhouse that had been transformed by Elena and her husband Andrea, the vintner of the vineyard down the hill, into one of the most stunning warm minimalist contemporary spaces imaginable -- set on a blond hillside with edged with dark greens, sitings of deer, boar, sheep, and flocks of birds. The arched downstairs rooms were spare but so hospitable and welcoming -- and the entry hall opened to the other side of the building and a patio dinning area with spectacular Tuscan views. The hallway framed our lovely and gracious hostess -- smiling and ready to show us the building and our rooms. From the first pouring of water into cerulean blue glasses -- we knew this was going to be an evening to remember. Bedrooms were designed with extraordinary verve -- white washed ceilings, walls and light wood floors make one feel as if one is floating. Not an extraneous detail anywhere -- but enough to be so tranquil and interesting. The linens were exceptional -- and getting into bed was like a decompression tank. What's more -- everything smelled so fresh -- herbs and spearmint. Then there was the food... far beyond anyone's expectations. A cook of exceptional quality who had owned and run three successful restaurants in Venice, Elena has come Val d'Orcia to make bespoke experiences for tired cosmopolites. Further, Elena has sourced the food from all of her fine neighbors -- setting a standard and commitment for excellence that is hard to beat anywhere. Dinner under the stars started with a neighbor's Pecorino Romano cheese melted and drizzled with honey. Then there was a pasta course of tagliatelle with a sauce of artichoke, native mushrooms, herbs and ricotta cheese. The main entree was a roast of pork with pears, sage, and ginger, a timbal of carrots with cardamon, and herbed chic peas. This was all served with the house's exceptionally delicious Terra Luna red Val d'Orcia wine. Dessert was a confection of grape, layered with a whipped custardy cream and topped with crumbled meringue. All served with such humble aplomb and delightful conversation. As we sat eating stunning course after stunning course under the stars, a thread of Miles Davis wafted around us and disappeared into the hills. Breakfast, too, was an otherworldly experience set out on a long farm table indoors. These are exceptional hosts who are committed to helping families, couples and individuals regain their equilibrium and remember the sources of well being. They live with vision and commitment to nature and excellence that is unparalleled.
