Walter is a very friendly host. He knew what to recommend in the area and was available if I had questions. The house is an antique and felt very homey. We stayed in the room that was in the attic so some areas of the ceiling were low. However the lighting from the roof top windows made a nice touch.

Walter is a great host and had a lot of great suggestions on things to do and see in Newport. It was our first airbnb experience and while we were aprehensive about 'shared space' it turned out to be no big deal. Our bedroom was private and it was nice to talk to the other guests over coffee in the morning. Poplar House is comfortable and conveniently located.

Beware!!!! The reason there is a strict refund policy is that this place has health and safety issues that are not apparent in the photos but were all too apparent to us as soon as we arrived at the house. As such,I am sure we have not been the first to check in and check out in rapid succession. Immediately, upon entering the house, my husband and I both noticed that the place smelled musty and moldy. Based upon the dirtiness and mustiness of the carpets, they clearly have not been professionally cleaned for some time and are well past their useful life. When I let the owner know about the odor problem, he told me that he had never gotten any complaints regarding mustiness before and he suggested running the air purifier (NOTE: Trip Advisor reviews mention this same mustiness issue which would seem to suggest the owner had prior knowledge of this issue. ). I let him know that we had already done that as well as run the air conditioner and found that there was no improvement. He told me I must have a sensitive nose and not be used to the pollen and outdoor smells. ????? Ummmm I live in New England and am an avid gardner. After I told him we were leaving, he made no offer to help, move us or address the situation any further. Thecusdues were not isolated to the mustiness. The bed in our room was wedged against the wall to the point where one of us would have had to crawl over the other if we had to use the bathroom during the night. There is a tremendous amount of old furniture and "stuff" everywhere to the point of being excessive and crowding the space. There was an electrical box hanging off the side of the house and several other code violations that were noted by my husband (who is a Master Electrician) as potential fire and safety issues. We contemplated whether to stay knowing that we risked forfeiting our money but concluded that we didn't want to risk our health or safety. That's how bad it was!!! In short...... do yourself a favor and just keep looking!!!! You can find reputable, clean B&Bs that are similarly priced! I am posting this in the hopes that we can save some other unwitting travelers from the same fate we suffered. If you look deep within the AirBnB reviews for this property, you will find several honest but negative reviews. Apparently, nothing but positive feedback is acceptable to the owner because in each instance, the owner has responded to these reviews by sharing scathing personal commentary about the reviewers in an attempt to intimidate others from not sharing their honest opinion. So, I am expecting that he will do the same to us. Although, given the fact that we were literally at the house for less than an hour and in that time we walked around the block trying to decide whether...

Response from The Owner:
Sorry for your choosing to act in such an extreme way. Very uncommon, since I have only had two other poor reviews in the past two years out of many hundreds of occupants per year. We have been open and operating for 37 years. The poor Trip Advisor review came after I had informed those people that were consuming two quarts of liquor plus wine and beer per day, that they should not have taken down the "Do not cook per order of the fire Marshal" sign that was posted above the stove. They were cooking full meals and not going out to see Newport for being too drunk, arrogant, quite overly judgmental and somewhat belligerent. They also went through every cabinet and cupboard, messing with many things that were obviously not at their disposal to consume. The second poor review was from people that did not complain when I repeatedly told them to call if there were any problems or needing anything. We are here to assist in making a pleasant stay for our guests many varied personal wants and desires. You know you cannot please everyone all of the time. We are averaging 4.5 to 5-star reviews. Like I said before it is not uncommon to not have air conditioning going in advance in hotels, motels, and inns. It is a short live inconvenience for some who prefer A/C. Too bad you did not stay more than an hour to see that everything cooled down and dried out the thick humid air that day's weather provided.

Walter was wonderful. Wealth of information about the local attractions. Bring a pencil and paper to keep track of all the sites he recommends. Best advice he gave us was to visit several places during our stay. Just order an appetizer and move on to the next place.
