Hawthorne 1+ Bdrm ♥ Vintage Treetop

Apartment - Entire home/apt · SE Taylor St, Portland, OR 97214, United States

A vintage-lover's dream nestled in the heart of Portland's Sunnyside district! From the outside: not fancy-shmancy. On the inside: golden, shiny, clean. A secret garden where low-brow meets Liberace! You're important, you deserve the canopy bed!

The Space

Oh Hi!

Please be sure to read the entire description as well as the house rules and message me with any questions whatsoever!

This apartment has 1 King size pillow-top bed. It's very well-suited for a single guest, a couple, or best friends! We can supply a queen sized air-mattress that fits snug on top of the couch in the back room if needed.

The Treetop Suite is a 1 bedroom apartment on the top floor of a large 3-story house that is split up into 3 separate apartments - each with its own outside entry.

***Please note that there are 2 flights of outdoor stairs to access the front door.***

This suite gets lots of golden light pouring in at all times of day and sits high in the treetops - very tranquil and breezy. Step outside your front door and watch the nice people walking their dogs, children, and themselves!

Decorated in a mix of 50's, 60's and 70's - there's lots of mirrors and golden curly-cues. Prolly around 1,000 square feet of filigreed pretty.

The main bedroom has its own entry And there is a large picture window facing South behind the headboard of the pillow-top King bed so you can go to sleep looking up at the stars and awake to passive morning light behind you. Dramatic and special!

There's a big room at the back of the apartment with its own entry and small space to sit right outside the door and look at the neighbor's amazing gardens and chickens. It is currently utilized as a living room with a huge 70's sectional and a kitschy fake fireplace for a nice warm mood.

Off of the main bedroom there is a smaller private room that is currently configured as a reading room/office. A gold velvet loveseat to sit or nap on. That room gets the most amazing golden light in the evening and faces West.

There is a large open kitchen with a super cute table for two. There's a long workspace that can be pulled out from the wall to add additional seating if you want to have a dinner party. There is also a table in the utility room that you can use for more dining space if needed.

Um.. gas stove, full size fridge... you know, all the normal kitchen stuff. There's a place for everything, and everything is in its place. Some spices, a bar cart, pots and pans, a Mocha Pot for making grrrreat coffee, teapot, teas, martini glasses, so on and so on.

The bathroom has a small shower stall, so no bathtub. But it's got all the other bathroomy stuff!

To avoid any confusion imagonna spell out a few need-to-knows... The house was built in about 1890. Through the decades, there have been a patchwork of weird repairs. So, point is... it isn't brand new and untouched by time's meddling hands. It has character... it has scars... it has stories. And I love that about it. But... it's not for everyone and we've all lived the saying that you can't please everyone all the time. But I try.

So it isn't perfect, but if you focus on what it does have rather than what it doesn't, I hope that you will experience something from the past that modern living has abandoned. Something important.

From the outside, the place is really pretty non-descript - not fancy-shmancy. Like a secret garden where low-brow meets Liberace. We want you to feel like you can kick your shoes off, drink a beer and swear while you sew! We honor a strict confidentiality policy, so if you're shy or just too handsome for the general public, we'll leave you be and won't tell anyone you're here. This is a really wonderful place to hide from the world too if that's where you're at.

We were featured in the Willamette Week's 2008 Article about Portland Hot Design spots:

"A cross between a bed-and-breakfast, an extended-stay hotel and crashing at your BeDazzler-obsessed friend’s house, Portland’s Beauty Sleep ((website hidden)) features fancifully themed rooms to help even the most jaded hipsters get their kitsch on. The two-room Peacock Suite, in particular, is so chock-full of over-the-top 1950s furniture it feels like Liberace’s guest house on steroids. This and other suites come stocked with a collection of vintage nightgowns, robes, boudoir slippers, costume jewelry, fur stoles and wigs so you can play dress-up and lounge about languidly, double martini in hand, as Perry Como serenades you on the vintage LP player. With all of these distractions, who could sleep?"

And Apartment Therapy had this to say as well:

"While the majority of the newspaper's list was familiar, we’re most excited about being pointed in the direction of Beauty Sleep, a B&B that sounds straight out of a John Waters flick. Crazy, a teensy bit creepy and utterly Portland."

We like you already and have created this unique experience just for you. Yay!

Guest Access

You get your own private apartment with all the usual apartment stuff - and more! And you can hang out in the shared side yard too - there's plenty of space to sit on the swing, or make a fire in the fire pit, or sit under the cherry tree.

Interaction with Guests

I'll be there to check you in and answer any questions, but from there it's as much of as little communication as you prefer. I'm always available day or night via text message, but I'll stay outta your way if you're shy, private, or grumpy. And I'm also around if you have questions, you're always welcome to hang out in the yard if I'm having a sip with friends or other guests.

As far as checkout, you don't even need to see me if you don't want since there are keyboxes, but I do appreciate a courtesy text letting me know that you've checked out.

The Neighborhood

We're located in the golden heart of the Sunnyside district - right in the middle of the cinnamon roll that is Hawthorne and Belmont. This specific location has over 300 amenities within just one mile. Yay!! Everything your heart desires is within walking distance... Stumptown coffee roasters, Bagdad Theater, Laurelhurst park, too many great restaurants to list, Zupan's market, New Seasons, shops full of cute shiny things, and vintage shopping galore. And the people-watching in this neighborhood is unparalleled... so many peacocks! We hope that you treat yourself to a walk through this neighborhood that brought us out of our pumpkin shells and has won our forever love.

If you're traveling solo, I've put a few games in the suite that you can play by yourself, there's some vintage Family Circle magazines from the 50's to leaf through, or you could try your hand at baking cookies or cupcakes.

Getting around

We are within just a few blocks of 3 major bus lines - the #15 Belmont, the #14 Hawthorne, and the #75 Cesar Chavez.

This is also a hotspot for Car2Go - so if you're the plan-ahead type, you can get an account with them and then have a tiny smart car by the hour if and when you need it - super smart! ZipCar and GetAround are other options if you don't want to drive a tiny baby-shoe smart-car around :)

Specific directions are provided to guests with confirmed reservations and are included on their itinerary.

Other Things to Note

This property is probably not suitable for families with elementary school-age children or younger.

With rare exception, I only accept reservations from guests that have been previously reviewed on airbnb. If you have not been reviewed, I will ask for further information, references and identification about you before I consider accepting your reservation.

I only accept guests who have complete profiles with information about themselves and a clear photograph of you.

Guests must have an “airbnb Verified ID” (connected to your social networks, and scanning your official ID or confirming personal details - see airbnb website section "Verified ID" for information).

I only accept reservations from the guests that will be actually staying here - I don't accept reservations from parents, children, friends, etc. on behalf of potential guests. Those who wish to make a reservation must be the ones actually staying in my home.

There is no TV or microwave. They're both kinda bad for you. :) But we've got wireless, so if you are the type who likes to stay in and watch a movie, then bring a laptop. That said, there are soooooo many things to do and see and hear and taste and drink within a few blocks in either direction - 4 movie theaters within walking distance even! YAAAY!

Your apartment is fully outfitted with most of the basics that you'll need to cook, clean up, shower, shampoo and shine... ironing board/iron, hairdryer, wine key, paper towels, coffee, tea, scented candles, fresh towels and linens, etc.

All our linens are washed on the hot cycle at the Belmont Eco Wash - brand new energy efficient ElectroLuxe machines and a super awesome place. If you're staying for a while, please note that there is no on-site laundry here at the house. But Belmont Eco Wash is just a few blocks away - most machines take a debit card, you're in and out in under an hour (suuuuuper fast!), they have wi-fi, it's super clean and awesome, AND your washing machine can even text you when your cycle is done! Whaaaat?!?!

We'll stock you up with towels, but we encourage guests to re-use your towels as you would at home.

I'll tell you about recycling and composting when you check in.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • I hope to always remember the memories of my stay here...what an amazing experience! Meg is a wonderful hostess - very helpful and friendly! When I arrived from the airport, Meg had some juice, fruit, and muffins for me. She was available to answer all of my questions throughout my stay...she truly went above and beyond any of my expectations.

If you ever wanted to travel through time, this vintage apt will take you back at least 30 years...yep, it's THAT cool. Every room has its own character, and as I enjoyed my home brewed moka pot cup of Stumptown coffee (an annex is just a few blocks away), I found myself daydreaming about the objects around the house.

The apartment was clean, comfortable, and exactly as described. The heaters worked great, as I am a Floridian and have thin blood. :) Kitchen had everything I needed, including a bamboo steamer! Appliances in great working order.

This is something unique, low key, and inspiring. Enjoy!

  • Where do I even start? Meg's listing is AMAZING! I stayed there while I was in Portland for a work project for five weeks. It's a perfect place to call your temporary home! The decor is beautifully kitschy, the bed is huge and comfortable, there are more than enough clean linens and towels, the apartment itself is quite large, plenty of hot water and the shower pressure is great - I could go on and on.

The surrounding neighborhood quickly turned into my favorite neighborhood in Portland. You'll be close to bus routes, countless shops, restaurants, bars, and one of the most important Portland stops - Stumptown coffee. Even the cats in the neighborhood are nice :)

Meg herself was a dream! She's responsive, kind, and even drove me to the laundromat in her awesome baby blue Lincoln! I'd recommend staying here to anyone, and I hope to get the chance to stay here in the future! Do yourself a favor, and book nowhere else in Portland.

  • We really enjoyed our stay! Meg was wonderful - gave us a nice tour of the apartment and tips on the neighborhood. The place was clean and very spacious. Cute little details everywhere you looked. The bed was very comfortable. Nice food items and snacks. Parking was easy right in front of the building. Great access to dining on the east side (St. Jack, Pok Pok) and Alberta Street shopping. We would stay here again. The one drawback might be the 2 flights of stairs if you have a lot of stuff - not a biggie for us.

  • Meg was very friendly and accommodating, and the apartment was just as she described it. My mom and sister enjoyed their stay, despite the unusually hot temperatures. Meg was kind enough to provide a box fan to combat the Portland heat wave. My mom was especially pleased with the snacks and thoughtful details Meg provided and liked the quirky vintage decor.

    August 2012
  • My fiance and I, along with another friend, spent three nights in the treetop vintage retreat while attending a wedding in the Portland area and could not have asked for better accommodations. Meg was a considerate and gracious host and made us feel at home in her place from the minute we arrived. The apartment was clean, well furnished with unique and functional items, and located close enough to Hawthorn to walk for a cup off coffee, but far enough away to leave behind the noise and traffic to relax in the evening. The bed was surprisingly very comfortable. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a unique Portland accommodation.

    July 2012
  • Great experience. Place was advertised. Fantastic location, comfortable. Fairly funky and rustic, but that was advertised. Kitchen was totally usable. Tons of light from all sides. Would happily stay there again.

    July 2012
  • Meg has definitely created a super cool, kitsch-tastic retreat that fits perfectly in between two main Portland streets filled with cafes, shops, bars, and restaurants. It's also only 1.5 blocks from a main bus line that can get you anywhere in Portland. The only downside, was that the food in the neighborhood was SO good that I gained 5 pounds the week I stayed there. Maybe I shouldn't have had the Reggie Deluxe at Pine State Biscuits every morning?

    July 2012
  • Meg's listing was perfect-- immaculately clean, fantastic location, and an amazing enormous bed (seriously, it's like a fairytale). Meg welcomed me in person to show me around the listing and was super easy to communicate with. Booking, check in, and check out were a breeze. The listing was in easy walking distance of Belmont and Hawthorne but parking was also plentiful. Highly recommend-- thanks again, Meg!

    December 2013
  • Meg was great. Attentive and honest. The place was exactly as advertised and we'd stay again.

    December 2013
  • This is such a nice place to stay... Meg was very available if we had wanted something, but there was no need for it. It was all nice and perfect! Thanks, Meg!

We are what we choose to become
Oh hi! I like shiny objects, I find it cathartic to paint things gold, and I absolutely love Portland and this neighborhood. Native Oregonian, lived in Portland for over 10 years. We have been renting out these vintage-themed apartments to nice people since 2005. Now that airbnb has caught on, hopefully more people will find out about it and be able to experience something special and off the beaten path. We try to create more than just a place to sleep and sit - there's a warmth and a silent light-hearted narrative in the spaces that I hope you will enjoy and appreciate. And if you're at all interested in 50's - 70's vintage, this might be even more suited to your style. We love hosting and meeting new people! The great thing about this setup is that you have as much or as little privacy and interaction as you desire. I'm around if you need me, want directions, a private tour, or a snack. And if you are the independent, shy, or even grumpy type, we'll leave you be and you can call on usas needed. That's all for now I guess! Bye! Meg (website hidden)
