A vintage-lover's dream nestled in the heart of Portland's Sunnyside district! From the outside: not fancy-shmancy. On the inside: golden, shiny, clean. A secret garden where low-brow meets Liberace! You're important, you deserve the canopy bed!
Please be sure to read the entire description as well as the house rules and message me with any questions whatsoever!
*NUMBER OF GUESTS*
This apartment has 1 King size pillow-top bed. It's very well-suited for a single guest, a couple, or best friends! We can supply a queen sized air-mattress that fits snug on top of the couch in the back room if needed.
The Treetop Suite is a 1 bedroom apartment on the top floor of a large 3-story house that is split up into 3 separate apartments - each with its own outside entry.
***Please note that there are 2 flights of outdoor stairs to access the front door.***
This suite gets lots of golden light pouring in at all times of day and sits high in the treetops - very tranquil and breezy. Step outside your front door and watch the nice people walking their dogs, children, and themselves!
Decorated in a mix of 50's, 60's and 70's - there's lots of mirrors and golden curly-cues. Prolly around 900 square feet of filigreed pretty.
The main bedroom has its own entry And there is a large picture window facing South behind the headboard of the pillow-top King bed so you can go to sleep looking up at the stars and awake to passive morning light behind you. Dramatic and special!
There's a big room at the back of the apartment with its own entry and small space to sit right outside the door and look at the neighbor's amazing gardens and chickens. It is currently utilized as a living room with a huge 70's sectional and a kitschy fake fireplace for a nice warm mood.
Off of the main bedroom there is a smaller private room that is currently configured as a reading room/office. A gold velvet loveseat to sit or nap on. That room gets the most amazing golden light in the evening and faces West.
There is a large open kitchen with a super cute table for two. There's a long workspace that can be pulled out from the wall to add additional seating if you want to have a dinner party. There is also a table in the utility room that you can use for more dining space if needed.
Um.. gas stove, full size fridge... you know, all the normal kitchen stuff. There's a place for everything, and everything is in its place. Some spices, a bar cart, pots and pans, a Mocha Pot for making grrrreat coffee, teapot, teas, martini glasses, so on and so on.
The bathroom has a small shower stall, so no bathtub. But it's got all the other bathroomy stuff!
To avoid any confusion imagonna spell out a few need-to-knows... The house was built in about 1890. Through the decades, there have been a patchwork of weird repairs. So, point is... it isn't brand new and untouched by time's meddling hands. It has character... it has scars... it has stories. And I love that about it. But... it's not for everyone and we've all lived the saying that you can't please everyone all the time. But I try.
So it isn't perfect, but if you focus on what it does have rather than what it doesn't, I hope that you will experience something from the past that modern living has abandoned. Something important.
From the outside, the place is really pretty non-descript - not fancy-shmancy. Like a secret garden where low-brow meets Liberace. We want you to feel like you can kick your shoes off, drink a beer and swear while you sew! We honor a strict confidentiality policy, so if you're shy or just too handsome for the general public, we'll leave you be and won't tell anyone you're here. This is a really wonderful place to hide from the world too if that's where you're at.
We were featured in the Willamette Week's 2008 Article about Portland Hot Design spots:
"A cross between a bed-and-breakfast, an extended-stay hotel and crashing at your BeDazzler-obsessed friend’s house, Portland’s Beauty Sleep ((website hidden)) features fancifully themed rooms to help even the most jaded hipsters get their kitsch on. The two-room Peacock Suite, in particular, is so chock-full of over-the-top 1950s furniture it feels like Liberace’s guest house on steroids. This and other suites come stocked with a collection of vintage nightgowns, robes, boudoir slippers, costume jewelry, fur stoles and wigs so you can play dress-up and lounge about languidly, double martini in hand, as Perry Como serenades you on the vintage LP player. With all of these distractions, who could sleep?"
And Apartment Therapy had this to say as well:
"While the majority of the newspaper's list was familiar, we’re most excited about being pointed in the direction of Beauty Sleep, a B&B that sounds straight out of a John Waters flick. Crazy, a teensy bit creepy and utterly Portland."
We like you already and have created this unique experience just for you. Yay!
You get your own private apartment with all the usual apartment stuff - and more! And you can hang out in the shared side yard too - there's plenty of space to sit on the swing, or make a fire in the fire pit, or sit under the cherry tree.
Interaction with Guests
I'll be there to check you in and answer any questions, but from there it's as much of as little communication as you prefer. I'm always available day or night via text message, but I'll stay outta your way if you're shy, private, or grumpy. And I'm also around if you have questions, you're always welcome to hang out in the yard if I'm having a sip with friends or other guests.
As far as checkout, you don't even need to see me if you don't want since there are keyboxes, but I do appreciate a courtesy text letting me know that you've checked out.
We're located in the golden heart of the Sunnyside district - right in the middle of the cinnamon roll that is Hawthorne and Belmont. This specific location has over 300 amenities within just one mile. Yay!! Everything your heart desires is within walking distance... Stumptown coffee roasters, Bagdad Theater, Laurelhurst park, too many great restaurants to list, Zupan's market, New Seasons, shops full of cute shiny things, and vintage shopping galore. And the people-watching in this neighborhood is unparalleled... so many peacocks! We hope that you treat yourself to a walk through this neighborhood that brought us out of our pumpkin shells and has won our forever love.
If you're traveling solo, I've put a few games in the suite that you can play by yourself, there's some vintage Family Circle magazines from the 50's to leaf through, or you could try your hand at baking cookies or cupcakes.
We are within just a few blocks of 3 major bus lines - the #15 Belmont, the #14 Hawthorne, and the #75 Cesar Chavez.
This is also a hotspot for Car2Go - so if you're the plan-ahead type, you can get an account with them and then have a tiny smart car by the hour if and when you need it - super smart! ZipCar and GetAround are other options if you don't want to drive a tiny baby-shoe smart-car around :)
Specific directions are provided to guests with confirmed reservations and are included on their itinerary.
Other Things to Note
**PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS BEFORE REQUESTING A RESERVATION:*
This property is probably not suitable for families with elementary school-age children or younger.
With rare exception, I only accept reservations from guests that have been previously reviewed on airbnb. If you have not been reviewed, I will ask for further information, references and identification about you before I consider accepting your reservation.
I only accept guests who have complete profiles with information about themselves and a clear photograph of you.
Guests must have an “airbnb Verified ID” (connected to your social networks, and scanning your official ID or confirming personal details - see airbnb website section "Verified ID" for information).
I only accept reservations from the guests that will be actually staying here - I don't accept reservations from parents, children, friends, etc. on behalf of potential guests. Those who wish to make a reservation must be the ones actually staying in my home.
There is no TV or microwave. They're both kinda bad for you. :) But we've got wireless, so if you are the type who likes to stay in and watch a movie, then bring a laptop. That said, there are soooooo many things to do and see and hear and taste and drink within a few blocks in either direction - 4 movie theaters within walking distance even! YAAAY!
Your apartment is fully outfitted with most of the basics that you'll need to cook, clean up, shower, shampoo and shine... ironing board/iron, hairdryer, wine key, paper towels, coffee, tea, scented candles, fresh towels and linens, etc.
All our linens are washed on the hot cycle at the Belmont Eco Wash - brand new energy efficient ElectroLuxe machines and a super awesome place. If you're staying for a while, please note that there is no on-site laundry here at the house. But Belmont Eco Wash is just a few blocks away - most machines take a debit card, you're in and out in under an hour (suuuuuper fast!), they have wi-fi, it's super clean and awesome, AND your washing machine can even text you when your cycle is done! Whaaaat?!?!
We'll stock you up with towels, but we encourage guests to re-use your towels as you would at home.
I'll tell you about recycling and composting when you check in.
We will message you the day before you are scheduled to arrive. Please let us know approximately when you will be checking in so that we can be sure to have someone at the house and you won't be kept waiting when you arrive. Normally, we can't accept check-ins until after 3 pm to allow us to thoroughly clean and re-stock. We'll arrange a check-in time with you, but if you arrive before then, we won't be able to check you in until it's time.
PLEASE REMOVE YOUR SHOES
The Suite is carpeted and it can get rainy and muddy here in Portland, so this is a shoes-off apartment. It also cuts down on clopping noise for the apartment below. Also there's a fluffy white rug that we'd like to keep fluffy and white.
A personalized combination will be provided for the push-button lockbox outside the unit. The key stays in the box and the combination changes with each guest, so there are no concerns about lost keys, lock-outs, or duplicate keys.
We no longer accept pets in this unit. We love animals but we also want to be sensitive to those who are sensitive. There are cats in the neighborhood and occasionally in the shared yard, but not in any of the airbnb listings.
Smoking is OK outside in the side yard if you promise to be good and use the ashtrays so that I don't have to pick up soggy cigarette butts with my delicate lady hands.
We ask that guests observe an 11pm to 10 am rule of thumb with respect to loudness - in other words a modest volume. We encourage guest to come alive between 10 am and 11 pm - play some ELO and sing along, teach yourself new dance moves, laugh!
PARTIES AND EVENTS
Please no large/loud parties unless expressed ahead of time as a part of your booking. This is a fabulous place to host an event, and we'd be happy to book the suite for that purpose with an extra negotiable deposit and cleaning fee.
LOST AND FOUND
Occasionally people leave personal items behind. All rooms are thoroughly cleaned after each departure. We promise you that anything you forget will be safely and discreetly set aside for your retrieval.
Meg is a fantastic hostess! This is the second time we've stayed with her and this place really became a home. She is such a kind and conscientious person, and her excellent personality really comes through in this clean, cute and cozy space. When there was a plumbing issue at the house, Meg flew into action and made sure we were well looked after and had a wonderful place to stay while repair work was going on. But it wasn't as nice as this place. :)
We've now decided to move to Portland and staying here is one of the reasons we fell in love with the city. Stay here! You will love it.
This place is amazing.
First off, the neighborhood is great. I did some research and it paid off; this is a great part of Portland. You're surrounded by trees, and a short walk from bars and things to do. There was even a really great street fair one of the days. I rented a bike so I can't comment on public transportation.
The apartment itself has such a great feel to it. It's very welcoming, has a great huge bed, and awesome decor...I wish it was my apartment!
Meg was a wonderful host. I usually prefer to be independent and don't have much contact with AirBnB hosts, but I actually regret not getting to hang out with Meg more!
Usually if I stay in a city I'll always get a new AirBnB place, to keep sampling different neighborhoods. Whenever I go back to Portland, I might break that pattern and stay here again, it was that great!
We had a fantastic time in Portland, and a huge part of this was the wonderful place we stayed. Meg was nothing but kind and helpful upon our arrival, and the place itself was so charming and comfortable. We had a great cross-breeze with the doors and windows open, and the kitchen had everything we needed. The attention to detail was great as well. In addition to a fantastic decor, we appreciated small things like bus maps, pens, and reusable bags for shopping trips. The neighborhood itself is also a plus - we would absolutely return here!
Megan was an excellent host and very accommodating. She waited for us even though we hade a night late flight. She showed us the apt and offered some places to go. The treehouse was great, warm with a touch of vintage things, reminding us the beauty of those things. We felt like home. The neighborhood is SAFE, QUIET, FULL of trees and plants, like leaving in a small city forest. Restaurants, coffee shops, and bars are near by. Would definitely go back, and recommend this treehouse/apt to anyone who wants to visit Portland. Keep the treehouse posted :)))
We stayed in Meg's apartment for six nights on a visit to Portland to meet our newborn grandson. My son lives a short walk from her apartments. First, about Meg. She is gracious, welcoming, and available to make everything perfect. She also was patient as she guided us through our first airbnb experience. The apartment is very clean, fresh, and spacious. This is not easily achieved in a building this old. The ravages of age was, for us, a huge part of its charm. It is exactly as described and pictured. We loved having coffee/wine on the steel staircase in back overlooking the neighbors' back yards complete with chickens. The king bed was comfortable and the huge windows opened to Oregon's wonderful crisp breeze. The kitchen was well equipped and all appliances were in good working order. Meg has a great eye for décor. There were many things in her space that brought back sweet memories for my husband and I. Yes, we are old enough that the things we grew up with are now collectibles. The location was perfect for us! Meg was fine with us entertaining a few friends. There is a yard with comfortable outdoor furniture. By day 6 we felt like residents. The Treetop is more than lodging...it is an immersion in SE Portland culture.
We had a wonderful stay at the vintage treehouse apartment. First, the location is perfect: right between Belmont and Hawthorne at 37th, ie the level of the Baghdad Theatre and Powells bookstore and tons of great bars and restaurants. Great public transport. During our week's stay we went all over the city and couldn't imagine anywhere we'd rather be based. The host, Meg, was lovely: friendly, helpful, responsive and efficient. And the apartment itself is quirky and excellent. Clean, spacious, bright, and full of cool vintage decor , right down to the magazines. It felt quite quintessentially Portland. And it was quiet: we slept very well.
To clarify the layout, you have a private entrance through the garden and up a flight of external stairs. The front door opens to a large room: to the left is the bedroom area with a huge, comfy bed plus a chest of drawers and mirrors etc. (Coming off the bedroom area is a sitting room with a closet to hang up clothes - we used it as a luggage store/dressing room. But it could equally be a sitting room.) To the right is the kitchen and dining area. This area is separated from the bedroom area by a curtain, though we ended us using that curtain on the bedroom window which otherwise doesn't have one (eye masks are provided but personally we prefer a dark bedroom). The cute little bathroom is just off the kitchen, as is the main sitting area (which has a back door to some stairs where you can sit and enjoy the view of the neighbours' chickens. The set up worked well. We really enjoyed staying here. If friends are visiting Portland we'll be recommending this place to them, and if we return to the city, this will be our first choice of where to stay.
Meg's place was awesome! If you like being high up at tree level surrounded by sunlight and singing songbirds in one of Portland's best neighborhoods then this is the place for you! And not only that, but Meg is a super-cool host who makes everything easy. 5 stars! :)

I like shiny objects, I find it cathartic to paint things gold, and I absolutely love Portland and this neighborhood. Native Oregonian, lived in Portland for over 10 years. I've been renting out these vintage-themed apartments to nice people since 2005. Now that airbnb has caught on, hopefully more people will be able to experience something special and off the beaten path. I try to create more than just a place to sleep and sit - there's a warmth and a silent light-hearted narrative in the spaces that I hope you will enjoy and appreciate. And if you're at all interested in 50's - 70's vintage, this might be even more suited to your style.
By day I'm a software engineer - specializing in Oracle ERP B2B and A2A XML integrations. So if you wanna nerd out and talk about tech, yes! If you wanna talk about rainbows and puppy dogs instead, yes!
I love hosting and meeting new people! The great thing about this setup is that you have as much or as little privacy and interaction as you desire. I'm around if you need me, want directions, a private tour, or a snack. And if you are the independent, shy, or even grumpy type, I'll leave you be and you can call on me as needed.
That's all for now I guess!
