The lovely old village of Finestret of 130 inhabitants set in the rolling countryside of the foothills of the Pyrenees Orientales with the spectacular Mount Canigou (2784m) dominating the area. A river runs through the village and in Summer you can cool off in one of the deep clean pools suitable for bathing. The nearby small town of Vinca (5k)offers restaurants, a small supermarket, two bakeries and a lake with a beach area suitable for swimming and fishing. In the Summer there are pedalos and small boats available for hire, The nearby market town of Prades has a vibrant Tuesday morning market and a producers market on Saturday mornings, Also here there are good bars and restaurants, a swimming pool, fishing lake,cinema and helpful tourist (website hidden) the Summer months Prades hosts the internationally famous Pablo Casals Music Festival. Villefranche-de- Conflent is a small fortified town with the original walls and many interesting old buildings, There are caves nearby which are well worth a visit and following up the Cady valley you come to Vernet-les-Bains, a Spa town of Hot Springs with a Casino and beautiful parks. Vernet is the only town in France with a monument to the Entente Cordiale and it also boasts and English Church. Above Vernet on the slopes of Mount Canigou there is the working monastery of St Martin de Canigou, which you can visit as well as the nearby monastery of St Michel de Cuixa with its beautiful cloisters. For the adventurous there are outdoor pursuits at Marquixanes including rafting other water sports and a little further afield there are the ski centres of Font Romeu and Les Angles where both Alpine and Nordic ski ing available in the Winter months. The beautiful Mediterranean coast is only 40 minutes away with clean safe beaches at Canet, Argeles and the artists haven of Collioure.
Free Parking is available very close to the house , Flights in Summer months to Perpignan via Ryanair and throughout the year to Carcasonne and Gerona in Northern Spain.There is a local train service from Vinca. The local trains are subsidised at 1 euro a trip. There is a local bus service, also at 1 euro. The Little Yellow Train leaves from Villefranche de Conflent and takes you through tunnels and over viaducts up to the high Pyrenees, more expensive but well worth the trip.
Other Things to Note
There are stone steps leading up from the entrance courtyard to the accommodation, which is on two floors so the property is not recommended for small children under 5 or people with limited mobility. A car is recommended
