A romantic flat with astonishing view, perfect for those who love the medieval atmosphere and the uncontaminated nature. Thesan's (the etruscan godess of dawn) house is into the middle of the east quarter of Sorano. Located in the pedestrian area but not far from a parking lot, it has got three small floors: kitchen, living room with a dining table and a sofabed, big bedroom for two + a bed for a child. The garden is not far, it takes just 5 minutes of a fascinating walk into the valley to join it. Sorano is located in the middle of the most secret and sacred etruscan lands, and it is loved by artists and by who is sensible to the real things. Breathtaking scenery, excellent tipical restaurants, wonderful walks or rides, baths in several different termal waters, quality craftsmanship.
This is a magic and hospitable land — volcanic and tranquil, wild and sweet. Here dwells something inexpressible and magnetic which preserves it from any form of pollution.
“The whole thing small and dainty in proportion, and fresh, somehow charming instead of impressive. There seems to have been in the Etruscan instinct a real desire to preserve the natural humour of life. And that is a task surely more worthy, and even much more difficult in the long run, than conquering the world or sacrificing the self or saving the immortal soul..."

"Magical" is a good way to describe our stay at Clara's place. This was so much better than staying at a hotel! The home was exactly as described in the pictures, beautiful, with a rustic charm. Clara was a wonderful host, giving us a tour of her garden, available for any questions we might have. She gave us excellent recommendations of where to go, and things to do, all of which we did and thoroughly enjoyed. (Don't miss the pizza at Pizzeria Osee in Manciano or the Saturnia Thermal Springs!) We also enjoyed exploring the village of Sorano and learning about its many centuries old history. Sorano at Clara's home is a very special place that is at the top of our list of places to return someday.
Sorano is definitely MY magic Etruscan village. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay of four nights in May 2014, and only wish we had planned to stay at least several more days. Clara, charming, helpful and knowledgeable about Etruscan history, graciously invited us to her house next door to tell us a bit about the town and advise us on local sites and hikes. What we enjoyed most was walking several of the local Via Cave, hanging out in Clara’s garden, catching snippets of town life out the window, and exploring the streets of Sorano. The views across the river are dreamy. Her garden is soulful, and essential to visit. A meal at L’Ottava Rima a must-do.
We also day-tripped to Sovana and Pitiggliano, and the hot springs at Saturnia, but our deepest pleasure came from Sorano itself. The house is sweet, rustic, on three compact floors. The bedroom furniture is antique and made from cypress wood and the linens are vintage, handwoven, ironed and such a delight to sleep on. A magic little time machine.
Clara's apartment is in the Centre of Sorano, a lovely little village in the Maremma (southern Tuscany). The village is right on a cliff that separates it from the other side of the Valley. Sorano is small but there are a few remarkable sites (the fortress and the via Cava), restaurants and grocery shops.
The surroundings of Sorano are stunning and include Pitigliano (a larger town, very similar to Sorano, but more lively), Sovana, Scansano, various thermal resorts and hot springs. The area is also rich in culinary delicacies: oil, wine, etc.
Clara was very friendly and able to direct us to very beautiful spots, is very knowledgeable of the surroundings and has given us precious tips. She also left plenty of informative material in the house and there are also many books on various Maremma-topics.
When it comes to the apartment itself, it is a tastefully renovated flat in a old house. the original details, but also the old furniture make it very charming and cosy. The sleeping room is particularly beautiful with high ceiling and huge wooden beams. There is a small kitchen (with gas stove, no oven) which has everything you need for the self-caterers and was stocked with coffee, milk, honey, etc. There were also some vegetables from the garden that I highly recommend to visit since it has breath taking views of the town. Clara has also a shop selling hemp products and the house has bedding and kitchen textiles which are from the time farmers of Sorano grew their hemp in the valley. The shop, called 'I Canapai' is also at the end of the street, worth a visit and also a place to find Clara if you need info.
If I have to find a negative side --which is something that every good review should have-- could be the white couch in the living room that would be better covered with some cloth to add colour.
All in all, a great experience in Clara's flat and I warmly recommend it.
Appartamento bellissimo, ristrutturato ed arredato con gusto in Sorano (Maremma). Il paese stesso e'da sogno e la proprietaria e'molto gentile ed informata sulle vicinanze. Insomma, raccomandatissimo!
Clara was very nice and we enjoyed our time in Sorano. The apartment was lovely. Beautiful furniture and decorations. It really felt like a home. The wood fireplace was a lot of fun too. Wonderful hiking around the town. One of our highlights was a horseback ride through a nearby valley. Only downside was that Sorano shuts down from like (phone number hidden).every day. Also, the local restaurants were not the best. But that is why we had a kitchen! All in all we were very pleased with our stay at this lovely little village home. Thanks Clara for having such a nice home.
What a special place! It was a relief to get away from the crowds. Clara is an exceptional host. I agree with all the other reviews and just add....set aside all your previous plans of things you think you have to do. Listen to Clara's suggestions and follow them. Each yielded an very special and exceptional experience. Right down to the hugest porcupine I have ever seen on the walk to the Necropolis.
We just loved this apartment! So cozy, rustic, and truly one of a kind! Clara was a lovely host.
Always a great night's sleep and it even had a hairdryer!
