McKechnie Cottage - A taste of Old Cape Cod
This early 1900's antique cottage sits atop the heights and provides a wonderful view of the town cove and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Most of our tenants have been coming for 20-40 years, so this is a unique opportunity to find a place you will want to come back to for years to come. Three bedrooms, 1 bath, fully furnished, full kitchen and a comfortable porch with a view you won't want to leave.

You can watch the sunrise from the porch while you sip a cup of coffee and in the evening, take a quick ride (10 min) to the bay side to watch the sun set. Step back in time and relax. Life doesn't get much better than this.

Your well-behaved pets are more than welcome. We don't want you to feel guilty about leaving them in a kennel.

Cottage, porch and surrounding area (5 acres) are all non-smoking.

You are 10 minutes from everything: beaches (Cape Cod National Seashore), ponds, bike path, a place to launch your kayak. supermarket, fish store, package store etc.

WEEKLY RENTALS ONLY - 50% deposit and lease. Rates are dependent on pre/prime or post-prime rental. Please do not consider your rental confirmed until we have communicated directly.

  • I'm trying to think of what to say that the other guests haven't said. Perfect, perfect, perfect seems about right to me. Joyce and Duane are lovely, funny, easy, helpful. Everything in the cottage hit the sweet spot between casual/relaxed and top-notch--there are so many signs of thoughtfulness and attention. It's a pleasing place to be in--it's not just a base, it's part of the vacation. The porch is fabulous, but there are nice windows everywhere. It's lovely to watch the tide come in and out. We saw beautiful days and lightning storms and even a rainbow—for some reason we felt all the pleasure and excitement in the changes of weather that we did when we were kids. We enjoyed the bird feeders. The location is excellent, and I was delighted (on Cape Cod, with Route 6) that I could do so much without getting into the car. Biking, kayaking, Fort Hill, swimming....the friend who referred this to me said it was "a special place," and it was for me.

  • What a magical place! Gorgeous views, accessible to everything, and the ideal old Cape Cod experience. The cottage was perfect... like stepping back in time yet with all the conveniences of modern day. Clean as a pin and with everything you might need. Joyce and Darrell with lovely hosts, full of information on local paths and secret spots. We'll be back!

  • Perfect. Perfect. Perfect. The prettiest views from the big front porch, the cottage decorated in a casual yet very intentional way that matches the 1924 era in which it was built. Great mattress on the queen bed,( good for the back, clearly doesn't date to 1924!) Things you want to be new are new (kitchen, bath, tv) but things you want cute and old are cute and old (wicker settee, porch furniture). Everything spic and span, and yet not overly fussy. I never felt worried that I'd get sand on the floor, and yet everything is tidy and clean. Have I mentioned "Perfect"? Hosts were warm, professional, kind, and had a great sense of humor. Pets are allowed, but you would never know any had been in the cottage. Beautiful walk from the door down to the marsh, or to the Fort Hill National Seashore (not the sea, but marvelous nature walk with sweeping views of the bay), about 5 minutes drive to the ocean beach and to the grocery store or farmers' mkt or fish store...everything very close, but you feel you're a hundred miles away from the troubles of life.

Smith Heights Cottages have been in my husband's family for almost five generations. The management of the cottages just passed on to us in 2010. I manage the cottages on a full-time basis but my husband, Duane, maintains full-time employment elsewhere. He is a bit envious..... We love all things antique and these cottages allow us to mix our passion with our work. When we are at the Cape, we enjoy doing the same things that our renters enjoy. We rise early and go for a walk on the beach with our Maltese dog, Lulu. She's not much for the water though and avoids it at all costs. Oftentimes we arrive at the beach in time to see the sunrise. There are but a few people on the beach at this time, save for a handful of surfers..... it's very quiet and peaceful. We love touring all of the historic properties nearby and are members of the French Cable Museum in Orleans, Friends of the National Seashore, Nauset Light Preservation Society and the wonderful lighthouse and rescue center in Provincetown. We are never at a loss for things to do. My absolute favorite thing to do though is to grab whatever book I'm into at the time (right now I'm reading a book written by an Airbnb tenant that I had earlier this year)and sit on the porch. It is the most peaceful thing there is and no matter what is troubling me it all seems to recede to the back of my mind. I put my feet up on the porch rail, sit in a high back rocker and pass many hours away taking an occasional break to watch a pretty sailboat, kayakers paddle by or a great blue heron fly awkwardly overhead. It truly is a piece of heaven. I breath deeper here.
