Where do I begin? This was one of the best vacations my husband and I have had and a big part of that was due to Steven!
The room is perfect - nice size with a private bathroom and shower. The French doors open to a lovely area with a pool, hammock and plenty of space to lounge.
Steven is a great host - we felt immediately welcome. The vibe in the home is very relaxed and he went out of his way to help us with many things (going to market, helping with Spanish translation, recommending restaurants and even giving us rides in his El Camino! Tony, the chef, lives on the second floor and was also a wealth of knowledge about local produce and cooking. You can walk to a few of the gorgeous beaches in 5-15 minutes. We were very sad to go and would highly recommend this home to anyone who wants a more relaxed vibe than a hotel. BTW Steven's mescal can't be beat!!
Unfortunately, I was unable to visit Steven's Casa Amarilla as planned but my friends Sara and Bob stayed a month and sent their heartfelt thanks for a wonderful stay. Sara shares that they were so pleased they really wanted to cancel their next month's reservations elsewhere and stay another month. They had nothing but high praise for the home, the patio and pool area, the well appointed kitchen, the proximity to beaches and markets----but mostly for the gracious, lively, fun atmosphere that Steven creates for all his current guests, neighbors who drop by and former guests who feel free to stop by and say hello when they are passing through. Sara says they can't wait to go back another year!
First La Palapa. It is as good as advertised. The kitchen is amazing, putting ours back home to shame. The pool is cute, great to lounge around and the water is sublime. The palapa is great for a couple. It is very spacious and easy to enjoy the sun rising or setting. There is a 32 inch flat screen with an eclectic mix of dvds to enjoy. The organic coffee advertised is amazing and will no doubt make the rest of our coffee drinking in Mexico disappointing. The house is about a 15 minute walk from the beach, “Carizzalillo” which is definitely the prettiest beach around Puerto Escondido. If you love chocolate, BY FAR the best place to buy it is at a little corner store just up from the beach. Be sure to ask Steven about it. The market, Benito Juarez, is amazing. There is a little comedor there called “Panecita” where we had lunch everyday but one, getting great food and amazing fresh squeezed veggie and fruit juices and only paying 8 dollars for the two of us. The fish in the market (make sure you have Steven direct you to Patti) is the best we’ve ever had. The tuna and Mahi Mahi were exquisite and so cheap. We got roughly 3 pounds for 10 dollars. It almost seemed like stealing. Being in the residential neighborhood was really nice as we were never disturbed by the nightlife.
Now the host. Steven was incredible! We booked the place only two nights before arriving and he was very helpful with everything. He took the time to get me the numbers of the shuttle services and laid out all the transportation options for us so there was no stress. He was very accessible by phone and email. The night we arrived, we were treated to amazing mescal and an incredible dinner cooked by the professional chef, Tony, that lives there. Steven sells his own mescal and it is better than anything we have ever had. We bought five bottles when we left. He took us to the market our first morning there, and went with us a few more times during the week. He helped us get bus tickets to get to Oaxaca and did some many other things for us that the review would never end if I listed them all. My fiancée and I are proud to call Steven a friend now. He is a wonderful, sweet, genuine, caring and beautiful person. We weren’t sure what our week in Puerto Escondido would entail, but we left with a new friendship, countless nights of amazing dinners and wonderful company throughout, oh and nice tans to boot! I can’t recommend a host with more confidence than I recommend Steven, and La palapa was a wonderful relaxing getaway. We can’t wait to go back!
Steven was a fantastic host. He took us to the Mercado and showed us around. He also took us to the bank when we needed to change out money. Steven told us how to get to places of interest and had maps for us. He made our stay very comfortable. He was a gas, we shared stories and had a lot of laughs together. His place is wonderful, if you stay in the first floor bedroom or the palapa, both are wonderful. The pool is great, perfect temperature. It was nice to have a washer, and be able to hang dry our clothes. There is a woman who comes every morning selling fresh baked breads and muffins, she also has handmade soap...all are a must and wonderful. Steven is a great host with a wonderful place. We would definitely stay here again, we want to come back.

My wife and I recently took a trip to Mexico for all of December and through New Years. We heard from a friend that Puerto Escondido was a popular place to go for New Years for Mexicans and tourists alike, so we decided to check it out. As expected, it was hard to find a room in a hotel, but very luckily we found Steven's posting on Airbnb and decided to give it a shot.
We are so happy that we decided to stay with Steven. He has a beautiful three story house in a nice area (Bacocho is close to a couple very nice beaches and about a 10 minute walk to the center/market). Our room was very nice (comfortable bed, private bathroom with a shower). Steven was extremely friendly and helpful. He took us to the market for lunch on our first morning in town and gave us lots of good advice on what to see and do.
We had a great time and highly recommend it!

I came to Mexico in 2006 after owning and operating Sellwood Cycle Repair for 20 years in Portland, Oregon. Once here, I came across a mezcal producing village in the mountains of Oaxaca where families had been making the traditional beverage from a wild agave for generations. I soon found myself not only friends but in business with the producers and I now sell "Mezcal de Puta Madre" throughout México
