The Space

Come snorkel right outside your door (zillions of fish and turtles and eels)!.
Enjoy world-class wind surfing (put your board in a few miles up the beach and sail home)!
Go for incredible hikes in the desert hills (amazing cacti and geological formations)!
Go fishing right outside your door!
Our place near Los Barriles in East Cape is only 45 minutes from San Jose (SJD) airport.
Our rental rate is inclusive of Mexico's 25% VAT/income tax, which we pay to the Mexican government. You pay a cleaning fee ($50) when you arrive, and also an electricity fee during the summer months (more below).

Our place is right on the beach and every room (living room/dining room, two bedrooms) opens onto the sea with sliding glass doors. All rooms have AC and high-speed wireless internet. Kitchen is fully equipped (including dishwasher and filtered water) -- even has some herbs! -- and has a washer/dryer. There's a coffee grinder and the stores here sell absolutely marvelous coffee beans. We have a sit-on-top kayak that is easy to take out to sea and play with the dolphins or watch the fish.

Oh no! You have to go down lots of outdoor stairs, from the parking lot to the pool, and on down to our place by the beach. If stairs are a problem for you, our place won't be fun.

Close to our place are excellent places to eat, and fresh local produce and seafood if you want to cook at home. You can stay connected with wireless internet. Or read a book off our shelf. Or lounge in the pool or go out on our kayak. We love to frolic in the sea and hills and then watch the waves of the Sea of Cortez, and enjoy life!

Our "Survival Guide" tells you where to food shop or go out to eat, where to hike, and suggests lots of fun things to do.

Our rental manager (Wolf PM) will greet you, let you in, and collect a $150 security deposit of which $50 is the cleaning fee. She will also ask you to sign a short rental agreement, which we will send you a copy of upon request.

NOTE! East Cape is very laid back. If you want night life and room service, go to Cabo. Also we are very green, and do not allow spraying for insects inside our place. Semi-rural Baja has some interesting wildlife that occasionally gets inside, such as centipedes, cucarachas, and scorpions (especially in summer when they go looking for water). They are a nuisance but not deadly. If you have any problems, you can use the Home Defense spray in the laundry closet. Or grab an old shoe! At the hotels they spray all the time, so you won't see any bugs (hey you'll get lots of pesticides). Also the sea and salt are very hard on all metals and plastic and cloth, and so the sinks might leak (we continually repair them), or the AC batteries might go bad (we tried keeping spares handy, but of course they rust too) or the pots and pans collect some rust very quickly. Hence you see "Baja repairs" galore. If this isn't your style, enjoy the Cabo hotels.

During the warm months of May through October, there is a daily energy surcharge ($10) because of the high costs of running the ACs. Wolfe PM will also collect this fee when you check in. Please run them only when in the room, and keep the temperature set in the mid-to-upper 70s (24 C), which feels pleasantly cool. And the earth will thank you!

We have a greyhound when we are staying there. So if you are super sensitive to dogs, this may not be the place for you (even though dog is not there). Lots of friendly dogs (and people) in Baja!

Come enjoy Nature and warm sunny days by the sea!!!

Guest Access

Our place, and kayak, and things for the beach, and fully stocked kitchen! Please read the details in the description, or email if you have questions.

Interaction with Guests

We live in Pt Richmond California, and we stay in touch by email, especially before your visit. Wolf PM is great about taking care of any problems you have, and giving you information. Plus we are happy to hear from you during your visit, and help in any way from afar.

The Neighborhood

Our place is a 20 minute walk down the beach to Los Barriles, which has great places to eat and drink, and markets to buy food and whatever you need. Even closer by is a smaller market in Buena Vista that sells most things that you need (coffee, milk, some veggies and meat, cereal, etc). Once you register, we will send (email hidden) with lots of information about our place and things to do both close by and farther away, as well (email hidden).

Getting around

A car is really helpful for going shopping and out to eat and have fun. Not to mention going on some amazing hikes, and to explore small towns not far away. We have a parking lot right by the road when you drive in.

  • Clair and Richard, along with their local team south of the border, were super responsive in ensuring our travel to Baja went smoothly.

The apartment is brilliantly-situated, a perfect balance between accessible and remote/private. The description of the flat is entirely accurate.

I was particularly keen to snorkel in the Sea of Cortes and was delighted by the tremendous variety and vast schools I met 4 - 40 meters right off the beach in the "front yard" -- magnificent!

Clarissa and I are already talking about when to return to Clair and Richard's great corner of Baja!

  • Great value and location. Snorkeling out the front door. Beautiful views!

  • Had a wonderful return to Baja after a few years absence, this time with our 2 1/2 year old daughter in tow! Clair and Richard's condo puts a check in the 3 most important boxes for us in terms of accommodation: Location ,location, location. It really can't be beat. Everything (and everyone) lived up to expectations. We'll definitely be back!

  • We had a wonderful time at Clair's place. The location was amazing. Every morning we woke up to see if the sea was calm and then took the kayak out on the water or went snorkeling. The easy access to the beach was great! The house itself was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Great Trip!

  • We traveled for 3 weeks in Baja with our 12 month and almost 3 year old sons. We were looking for a comfortable home to spend our last week in and we found it! The condo was spacious and comfortable. The kitchen was great and very functional. And the views, the beach and pool were amazing. Our 3 year old loved laying down at the bow of the sit on top kayak (provided by Clair and Richard) and looking down at all the fish as we paddled along the shore. The snorkeling was fantastic on calm days and the pool was great when it was a bit windier or we needed a break from the sand. The other guest and residents were also incredibly nice and friendly. Town center was a very short drive and we enjoyed spending time at the playground, before and/or after dinner, and meeting the also very friendly locals. We had a wonderful time and would definitely return. Thank you, Clair and Richard, for your guidance and providing such great local information.

  • My husband and I, as well as our friends (another couple), just spent 10 days at Clair and Richard's lovely condo in Los Barilles. The location is amazing. It is steps from the beach, with great snorkelling right outside the condo. It is easy to just sit on the patio and watch the whales, dolphins, and pelicans.
We enjoyed exploring the area, with day trips to Todos Santos, Cabo Pulma, and San Jose. We loved some of the little Mexican restaurants in Los Barilles, where the food is delicious.
Clair and Richard are great hosts, and replied promptly to any questions we had. The condo was stocked with anything we might need. We particularly appreciated the snorkelling equipment, and I loved going out in the kayak!

  • My wife, two daughters (8 and 11), and I had a wonderful time staying at Clair and Richard's oceanside condo. The location was absolutely unbeatable! It is literally right on the beach so forgotten beach items are just no big deal. The snorkeling is wonderful with rocks and small reef features right in front of you. The condo makes life very convenient, and it allowed us to park the car, enjoy some cervezas, the beach, and a full kitchen on days when we just wanted to relax.

Nearby, there are great short hikes. A day trip to La Paz takes you through some wonderful small towns. There is no shortage of great stuff to do.

Clair and Richard are also wonderful, thoughtful hosts. They have excellent information to help plan an itinerary, including places to hike, descriptions of some towns and villages, and a few recommendations and suggestions for places to shop and eat. Questions that we had were answered immediately, and that was very comforting.

I highly recommend the place and the hosts!

  • If you're looking for a comfortable, fully equipped apartment steps off the beach, Clair's place is for you. We had a fabulous time falling asleep and waking up to the sound of the ocean just outside the door, kayaking, snorkeling, exploring and kitesurfing; if any of these things appeal to you, Clair's apartment is a great place to stay. Clair was also very helpful in suggesting 'off the beaten path' hikes, restaurants and activities. All in all we had a great time and wouldn't hesitate to come back to the Baja and stay again!

  • Clair's place was great! Los Barilles is essentially a quiet "fishing village", but it's so much more than that. There is snorkeling literally at your door step, and if your a kite or wind surfer you can rent equipment just up the breach, and if your a fishing enthusiast then you'll be amongst very many friends (locals and gringos alike). The supermarkets and restaurants are within easy reach (drive or walk) and everyone is very friendly. So for this type of relaxed and quiet location/vacation in Baja Sur, there will be little to be wanton for.

The apartment is truly a "breach front" property, so you can literally throw a stone into the ocean from the patio. The apartment has a great dining/living area, and the kitchen has all the essentials … that is, if you so choose to cook your (or gifted by the many friendly others around you) catch of the day. All rooms face the ocean and the daily sun rise over the Sea of Cortez is beautiful. And as the sun makes its daily traversal, the immediate and surrounding landscape also makes for great scenery (and photographs).

So if you want a quiet and relaxing vacation, with truly beach front access, and all the essentials of a home, and with friendly and laid back people around you, then Clair's place would be very likely candidate.

  • Clair's place is literally right on the beach! It was clean, the hostess who greeted us was nice, and the playbooks were spot on for recommendations within the local area.

Thanks, Clair for letting us stay at your home - it was perfect!!!

Hi, Clair is an economics professor at UC Berkeley (and clay artist), and Richard is a biochemist who invented a natural cure for UTI. We love to travel and explore new places, and we love to visit our kids and grandson in Brooklyn. We are easy going, and go to bed on early side. Also we jog and rollerblade all over town, or go to museums, theater, and out for a microbrew. Hope to meet you some day! Clair and Richard
