Our place near Los Barriles in East Cape is only 45 minutes from San Jose (SJD) airport.
Our rental rate is inclusive of Mexico's 25% VAT/income tax, which we pay to the Mexican government. You pay a cleaning fee ($50) and security deposit ($100) when you arrive, and also an electricity fee during the summer months (more below).
Our place is right on the beach and every room (living room/dining room, two bedrooms) opens onto the sea with sliding glass doors. All rooms have AC and high-speed wireless internet. Kitchen is fully equipped (including dishwasher and filtered water) -- even has some herbs! -- and has a washer/dryer. There's a coffee grinder and the stores here sell absolutely marvelous coffee beans. We have a sit-on-top kayak that is easy to take out to sea and play with the dolphins or watch the fish.
Oh no! You have to go down lots of outdoor stairs, from the parking lot to the pool, and on down to our place by the beach. If stairs are a problem for you, our place won't be fun.
Close to our place are excellent places to eat, and fresh local produce and seafood if you want to cook at home. You can stay connected with wireless internet. Or read a book off our shelf. Or lounge in the pool or go out on our kayak. We love to frolic in the sea and hills and then watch the waves of the Sea of Cortez, and enjoy life!
Our "Survival Guide" tells you where to food shop or go out to eat, where to hike, and suggests lots of fun things to do.
Our rental manager (Wolf PM) will greet you, let you in, and collect a $150 security deposit of which $50 is the cleaning fee. She will also ask you to sign a short rental agreement, which we will send you a copy of upon request.
NOTE! East Cape is very laid back. If you want night life and room service, go to Cabo. Also we are very green, and do not allow spraying for insects inside our place. Semi-rural Baja has some interesting wildlife that occasionally gets inside, such as centipedes, cucarachas, and scorpions (especially in summer when they go looking for water). They are a nuisance but not deadly. If you have any problems, you can use the Home Defense spray in the laundry closet. Or grab an old shoe! At the hotels they spray all the time, so you won't see any bugs (hey you'll get lots of pesticides). Also the sea and salt are very hard on all metals and plastic and cloth, and so the sinks might leak (we continually repair them), or the AC batteries might go bad (we tried keeping spares handy, but of course they rust too) or the pots and pans collect some rust very quickly. Hence you see "Baja repairs" galore. If this isn't your style, enjoy the Cabo hotels.
During the warm months of May through October, there is a daily energy surcharge ($10 to $20) because of the high costs of running the ACs. Wolfe PM will also collect this fee when you check in. Please run them only when in the room, and keep the temperature set in the mid-to-upper 70s (24 C), which feels pleasantly cool. And the earth will thank you!
We have a greyhound when we are staying there. So if you are super sensitive to dogs, this may not be the place for you (even though dog is not there). Lots of friendly dogs (and people) in Baja!
Come enjoy Nature and warm sunny days by the sea!!!
Our place, and kayak, and things for the beach, and fully stocked kitchen! Please read the details in the description, or email if you have questions.
Interaction with Guests
We live in Pt Richmond California, and we stay in touch by email, especially before your visit. Wolf PM is great about taking care of any problems you have, and giving you information. Plus we are happy to hear from you during your visit, and help in any way from afar.
Our place is a 20 minute walk down the beach to Los Barriles, which has great places to eat and drink, and markets to buy food and whatever you need. Even closer by is a smaller market in Buena Vista that sells most things that you need (coffee, milk, some veggies and meat, cereal, etc). Once you register, we will send you a Survival Guide with lots of information about our place and things to do both close by and farther away, as well as a Hiking Guide.
A car is really helpful for going shopping and out to eat and have fun. Not to mention going on some amazing hikes, and to explore small towns not far away. We have a parking lot right by the road when you drive in.
Other Things to Note
Please read house rules.
You will be asked to pay a $100 security deposit in cash when you arrive, which is returned when you leave (unless you did some damage) and a $50 cleaning fee.
During the warm months of May through October, there is a daily energy surcharge ( $5 - $20 per day, depending on month and number of people) because of the high cost of running the ACs. Please run them only when in the room, and keep the temperature set in the mid-70s (24 C), which feels pleasantly cool.
The hosts, Clair and Richard were very responsive and helpful. Everything was accurately described. The Condo was wonderful - right on the beach. It was completely stocked and comfortable.
We had a great stay. Not exactly sure why we left. We returned home to 10" of snow.
We had an excellent experience staying at Clair and Richard's place. The pictures and descriptions in the listing provided an accurate depiction of the space. Clean, comfortable, and convenient. While the living space is great, the location of the condo is really something special. Just outside of Los Barriles, an easy walk and drive away, the beach directly in front of the house is clean and very quite. Waking up to the sunrise and to sound of waves lapping up against the shore, made even us San Diegans envious of just how beautiful it is here. Having made day trips to Todos Santos, La Paz, and Cabo, my girlfriend and I reaffirmed with each other on each occasion, just how happy we were to have to chosen to stay where we did. True story. We would/will come back in a heartbeat.
The listing description was (email hidden)e condo is well located, pretty much what we were looking for.
The condo was exactly as we expected, simple but well equipped. Everything worked fine. The internet was down for a bit, but was quickly fixed. Both bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious. The bedrooms also have views on the sea of Cortez. The building and location was better than we anticipated.
The views from the condos are amazing. We watched the sunrise every morning from the terrasse, which is surrounded by a well-maintained garden. It is located on the best section of the beach. We went snorkeling right in front of the place. We also used the kayak that the host graciously share with their guests.
We would definitely stay at Clair and Richard's again if we ever return to that area.
I stayed here with a companion over the US Thanksgiving holiday weekend for my first ever visit to Baja California Sur, and it was the most comfortable way to experience it I can imagine. For me, anyway. The town is cozy and friendly. Our neighbors were nice. The beach was clean and quiet. The water was warm and inviting. We made a day trip to La Paz for sightseeing and souvenir shopping, and that was fun. We shopped for groceries at Chapito's supermercado and cooked dinners in the apartment. I would love to return.
James wondered about the water in Los Barriles, like in restaurants. Tough question --- I wouldn't want to warrant anybody's water supply, personally, but we DO have a water system in Los Barriles. We put a paper-filter-type filter in our condo. The only other thing I can say is I've never gotten sick around where we live. Let me add that water purity is a big issue in Baja; and that Clair and I worked with a nonprofit that was going to bring purified water to outlying areas; and that yes, it's a struggle.
Clair and Richard's place is just as advertised - a lovely place on the beach. Our hosts gave us all the info we needed, and the property manager was easy to deal with too. No hitches. Two things that people should know about this place. First, Los Barriles is a very sleepy town. We didn't find a heavy party scene, but then we didn't look for it either. Secondly, you'll no doubt enjoy Clair and Richard's place better sometime other than mid-summer. We were there in November and the sun on the patio and coming through the front window was very warm. That said, it's a great place. Snorkeling off the beach and the fishing in the area is outstanding.
