The Space

An Elegant Environmentally Benevolent Studio/Casita.
Vigilante en Español means many things - watchful, keeper, guardian, observant, attentive to details. And there are many details to observe in this unique guest house that is only 4 1/2 easy blocks from the Parroquia, the center of San Miguel. Along the way you can stroll through Parque Juarez and pause to enjoy the beautiful colonial architecture. Walking 10 minutes the other direction will lead you to fine dining, world class musicians, the Saturday Organic Farmer's Market and other small tiendas (stores) for groceries .
Lovely light streams through the thoughtfully appointed ground level Casita/studio apartment with private entrance. A set of French doors open onto your private patio leading to the surrounding garden/courtyard. It is furnished with a Very Comfortable Queen size bed, full closet and set of four built in drawers, a cozy sitting area with a fireplace (gas logs) and desk area, beautiful bathroom and a well equipped full kitchen with a counter and stool area for eating.
Always available: purified water; FREE WiFi, a limited amount of free local calls and unlimited long distance to the States.
Not available - cable TV…. If you don't find it a freeing idea and find it is something you cannot manage without, there is a cable connection but you would need to make arrangements with the cable company when you arrive. It could take up to a week - 10 days and is quite expensive.
Other amenities include:
A welcome basket of fresh fruits, cheese and crackers;
DVD player;
Use of ecologically sensitive cleaning products;
For month or more stays - first four rolls of toilet paper;
I am happy to help you arrange for tours of the area, massages, available workshops, reservations for dining, show you where to hail a taxi (they are prolific and inexpensive);
Provide ideas about where to find work of local artisans and local attractions/festivals;
Bus/public transportation easily available - buses run continuously on Ancha de San Antonio to main destinations and transfer points - for about 5 pesos - see map for Ancha de San Antonio/Salida de Celaya. (Seems like a taxi is always driving by the house. They run about 30 pesos in town.)

Housekeeping arrangements vary depending on length of stay - see "extra details" for more info.

Guest Room in my home… Sometimes I make the guest room in my home available for short stays. For example if there are 3 people coming and two are staying in one of the casitas (there is only room for 2 in the casita), and they would like the third friend to stay on the same property. My home is on the same property with a small patio between the two buildings. This is ONLY for short stays (3 or 4 nights). So I have enclosed some photos of the guest room and it's private bath. They will have limited use of my kitchen and will need to clean up after themselves if they use dishes, etc. Please ask me about it's availability and cost.

My home is on the back half of the property so I am usually there for anything that comes up (or have a house sitter if I am not). There is a garden that needs work so once a week or so there is a gardener on the property. But your space is private and your privacy will be respected.

see "details"

Generally the casitas are available for stays of no longer than 2 months but please inquire about this and the cost.

  • Barbara's casita was very comfortable. It is beautifully decorated, peaceful, and with all the comforts of home. It is within walking distance from Centro, Parque Juarez, and wonderful restaurants, but without the frenzy of activity and noise of Centro itself. Barbara is a lovely host. She provided plenty of information on San Miguel, how to get around, good restaurants, maps, whatever you need. I hope you will stay here and enjoy the truly charming ambiance.

    Gracias Meredith y por nada. Glad it was just what you needed. If you are so inclined to return I would love to get together. What kind of fish would you recommend?

  • I put much thought in deciding where to stay on my first visit alone to San Miguel de Allende! When I saw Barbara’s listing, I knew I had found the one. I wanted a beautiful quiet place in Centro, but close to the energy of the city. Barbara’s casita, her gardens and her lovely spirit were the perfect choice! She is a gracious and attentive host! And her dog Joey, quickly became a favorite…he stopped by every day to give a warm hello! The casita is beautifully decorated with everything one needs, more lovely than the pictures. I didn’t want to leave! I am so grateful for all of Barbara’s guidance and support from the moment I booked….and throughout my stay. Her casita is a lovely sanctuary, peaceful, in the perfect location…and you can tell that it is true labor of love. Walking down the beautiful street, Aldama, to the Parroquia each day set the tone for spectacular days of exploration! I highly recommend Barbara’s casitas…. I plan to stay there many more times in the future! Thank you so much Barbara!

  • El Jardin del Ciervo Vigilante is a little sanctuary. Barbara is a delightful host, warm, friendly,creative and energetic. She made every effort to make sure we were comfortable to the extent of making a trip to pick up decaf coffee for us. The accommodations definitely lived up to our expectations and more. Returning, hot and exhausted, from our daily outings to the tranquil garden was most refreshing. After a little siesta we took to the patio just outside our door, enjoyed a glass of wine, snacks and our books. We had the pleasure of attending an art lecture and dinner with Barbara, getting to know her was one of the greatest pleasures. We look upon her as a friend and hope she will one day visit our home.

  • The location is superb and Barbara is a lovely and gracious hostess. The only complaint I have about this property would be the lack of cable TV. Otherwise, it is fine

  • Barbara's place is beautiful and in addition she is the best San Miguel tour guide - so impressed with her help with transport and thorough guide to San Miguel! The space is beautifully furnished and provides everything you could possibly need for a pleasant stay in an excellent location.

    Thank you!!

  • This was truly the most relaxing vacation we have had in some time. The location was excellent - easy walking distance to the center of the city. Our hostess, Sam, was so generous with her ideas and hospitality - and Joey, the wonderful Italian water dog, made our stay even better! When we return to San Miguel, we will certainly come back to this location!

  • An excellent small studio apartment on a ground floor courtyard - very quiet. Located within easy walking distance to Benito Juarez park, very lovely, and the Jardin at the center of town. There was construction going on at the house during our stay, limiting use of the garden, so check with Barbara to make sure that it is finished.

    Otherwise highly recommended - Barbara is a fine host and gave us some excellent local recommendations.

  • Barbara is a lovely hostess and has a wonderful cassita (or two) for anyone lucky enough to book it. The location could not be better and Barbara goes out of her way to assure her guests enjoy their visit. I'm so glad I'm going back in February, 2014.

  • This is the ‘room of ones own’ that everyone dreams of - a room of light, air, beauty and peace. My wish would be to replicate this studio at my own house. I would only go out to gather food, books and art supplies. It is the perfect space in which to read, write, paint, sleep and dream in.
    Barbara is just the person that you have always wanted in a host - lovely, kind, generous and in love with the city in which she lives. Her artistic aesthetic is seen everywhere on the property. Her home is her art and I feel so fortunate that she is willing to share it with those of us who come to San Miguel. I felt both protected and independent during my perfect two-week stay.
    I will most certainly return to Jardin Ciervo Vililante on my next visit to San Miguel de Allende and highly recommend it to newcomers and return visitors alike.

  • This apartment was immaculate and beautifully decorated, and a very convenient walk to the center of town and a large park. The garden offers a lovely refuge. Barbara was very accommodating, friendly, and helpful. A beautiful, private spot in a lovely town.
