One of two ancient mills joined by a private bridge.
Deep in the heart of rural Normandy this cottage offers a unique experience to those interested in escaping the hustle and bustle of city living.
MTB and walking trails extend for kilometres in all directions.
The 27-hole golf course at Granville and the famous Montmartin-sur-Mer beach are only 20mins away.
On hot days, you can wild-swim in the river!

The space
Walking and biking trails extend in all directions from this property. The river is literally beneath your verandah and widens into a deep pool where you can wild-swim*.

Sun beds, BBQ facilities and riverside garden are available for use.

Beaches to the west are less than 20mins away. Including Montmartin-sur-Mer which was recently listed amongst the top beaches of Europe.

Close restaurants include Le Krill in La Baleine (a 15-minute walk), and the gourmet restaurant Auberge De L'Abbaye near the Abbaye de Hambye.
All amenities are available 5 minutes away in the village of Hambye including a bar (l’Adresse) along with a supermarket (la Coccinelle) and fantastic pâtisserie and boulangerie (Le Fournil de l’Abbaye).

The large town of Gavray is 10 minutes away and hosts numerous bars and restaurants and a larger supermarket (U Express).

The gite is well situated for day trips (within 1 hour) to the top sites of Bayeux and the Normandy Landing Beaches to the north; Mont-Saint-Michel to the south; and Falaise (birthplace of William the Conqueror) to the east.

Closer to home, there is Coutances with its Gothic Cathedral; Avranches which holds the medieval manuscripts from Mont-Saint-Michel in its Scriptorial museum; and the Musée Christian Dior in Granville.

For golf enthusiasts there are 3 nearby coastal courses:
A small 9 hole municipal course at Brehal
The 18 hole Golf de Coutainville (green fees €45)
And the sublime 27 hole Golf Club de Granville (green fees €50-70). One of only a handful of 27 hole courses in the world.

For medievalists the 12th century Abbaye de Hambye is only 5 minutes away, and there are many medieval events in the region during peak season.

All linen and towels provided. NO HIDDEN EXTRAS.

* We advise that the location is unsuitable for small children.

Hambye, Normandie, France

For nature-lovers, there is a lot to see with a family of Bustards nesting nearby. There are amazing interactions between these and other birds of prey for regional and aerial supremacy! We also have owls (at night) and ducks nesting. Deer and foxes often traipse close by in the early mornings!!!
We are surrounded by a 300 acre dairy farm with its traditional Normandy herd. The cows like to chat with you in the morning over your first cup of coffee. As inquisitive beasts, they often come up to the moulin to check you out! Normandy is famous for its cheese-making and you have the opportunity to observe at least part of this process.
Wild swimming is possible in the river and is easiest below the barrage (weir).
Walking, hiking and MTB (mountain bike) trails extend in all directions from the moulin.
There are a number of golf courses within a 20-30min drive. The most interesting is the 27-hole course at Golf Club de Granville, Breville-sur-Mer.
Also only 20mins away is the house (now a museum) where Christian Dior grew up in Granville, as is one of the recently acclaimed top 10 beaches in Europe - Montmartin-sur-Mer.
The famous, ruined, 12th century Abbaye de Hambye lies close by on the Sienne.
Several restaurants are either within walking distance or easily driveable (details provided elsewhere).
All other provisions - food, boulangerie (bakery) and fuel within a 5 min drive.

My wife and I are veterinary surgeons and we are currently running a 300ha beef cattle property in Australia which was established in 1859 by an emancipated English convict. We like all forms of music (well perhaps not rap) and enjoy the spectacle of opera. I personally like all forms of artistic expression and hold a special place for the ancient cave art of France (e.g. Lascaux and Rouffignac) and Spain (e.g. Altamira and Cueva de El Castillo). I find the history of art fascinating. I spent 15 years travelling to and working on archaeological sites in Jordan and Syria as an archaeozoologist (animal bone specialist). My main periods of interest date from the Neolithic through the Chalcolithic into the Bronze Age. Obviously, I have a great interest in archaeology and history (the older the better). Dating to at least the early 17th century, Le Moulin de Beaufils allows me to dabble in my interests in a practical (if not more ‘modern’) way. I am intrigued by ancient construction methods and ways of life. The mill offers insights into all this - especially how flour was ground for bread-making.
