This exclusive, four-room suite will give you the right to claim that you've slept in a general store! The Heron Suite is located in The New River Nest, a former mercantile that's been renovated into living space by a craftsman featured on Treehouse Masters. From this perch, you can watch for Heron overhead and canoes below. The Nest might feel like a remote outpost, but it's only five miles from Boone. This retreat is for one or two people. Please read the entire listing before booking. Thanks!

The space
The Heron Suite is one of two completely private accommodations available at The New River Nest, a former general store that once served as a community hub for Watauga County. The mercantile ceased operation in the 1980s, and the structure sat dormant for three decades before being transformed into The New River Nest. The store's character has been preserved through a creative re-purposing of its original materials.

This cozy, four-room accommodation features a full kitchen with a live-edge island and buffet, a Queen-size bed, a reading room, and an outdoor seating area that overlooks the New River. Linens, pillows, and towels are provided. In the kitchen, you'll find a coffee maker, a selection of tea, and general utensils. We also offer paper towels, dish washing soap, trash bags, body wash, shampoo/conditioner, and a few other necessities. A smart television, with apps including Netflix, has been installed for your enjoyment, and we ask that you watch at a reasonable volume. You will be able to access Wi-fi with a password, and the suite is stocked with a small variety of books in case you find yourself in need of low-tech entertainment. They're intended for in-house use, but there's a donation jar if you find a page-turner that you'd like to keep reading after you leave. House rules--including no smoking or guest pets on the premises--can be found below.

Where you’ll be

Boone, North Carolina, United States

River trips that leave from our neighborhood can be booked through Wahoo's Adventures in season. We'll share specific instructions with interested parties. Fishing is another popular activity here, and it requires a state permit that can be purchased nearby, if needed. If you plan to spend time on the river without the aid of a professional outfitter, you should plan to bring any gear you might need (i.e. life jackets, tubes, etc.) with you. Outdoor equipment can be purchased at various locales in the High Country--including, quite fittingly, at general stores that are still in the retail business!

The Nest is directly on the river, but the path down is steep. We suggest a two-minute walk down our gravel road, so that you can utilize a state-maintained public access area. Be aware that you might see a free-roaming dog or two on your journey.
