Welcome to the ‘Apple Yard’ a stunning listed barn conversion in the heart of Dorset and Thomas Hardy country. Surrounded by private gardens, and forming part of the historic listed 16th Century Hammoon Manor (the largest thatched manor house in Dorset), Apple Yard provides a perfect base to discover ‘hidden England’ including - the world heritage sites of Stonehenge, and the Jurassic coast, Longleat, Sherborne Abbey, Shaftesbury, Dorchester, Salisbury Cathedral, and so much more!

The space
The accommodation comprises a living area flooded by natural light with access on both sides to gardens. With original exposed beams, wood burner, original art, and large double doors to gardens - the accommodation is especially warm and welcoming. There are 2 bedrooms, (one king and one double bed), with one en-suite shower room, and an additional family 'wet room'. Complimentary ‘Green and Spring’ toiletries are provided throughout.

The accommodation includes a modern kitchen (built-in dishwasher, microwave, freezer oven etc.,) with dining for 6. There is also internet enabled TV, Bluetooth audio system, high-speed wifi throughout, original art, wood burner, and underfloor heating, ensuring warmth, comfort and atmosphere all year round.

Wheelchair access is available to the Apple Yard via a ramp. In addition, the family 'wet room' has been designed for wheelchair access (although it is best to confirm with us at time of booking to ensure suitability).

Guests are invited to stroll along the Stour River that adjoins the Manor and if feeling lucky we are happy to provide a rod although no fish are guaranteed! Horse livery is also available within walking distance for those with horses and this can be organized by special arrangement.

For our international and U.S. vacationers wishing to explore 'Hidden England' rather than just London, and wanting to avoid the hassle of car hire and driving on the wrong side of the road down narrow country lanes, private pickup can be arranged from our local train station (Gillingham Dorset – 1hr 50mins from London Waterloo), or from the airport.

In addition, private guided tours to fit around your vacation itinerary can be arranged so you can experience the most out of your stay with us and the beauty and history of the surrounding areas.

All pickup and private guided tours are not included in the accommodation costs and are must be made by special arrangement with us at time of booking.

My wife Georgina and I live in the Manor with our two dogs, 'Olive' our black and very deaf lab, and ‘Mabel’ our overfriendly Dachsund. We also have a number of free-roaming chickens 'our ladies' who will be happy to provide you with fresh eggs during your stay. We all welcome you!

Outside of the immediate areas of interest, including Hambledon Hill and its iron age earthworks,
Grade1 listed Hammoon church and Hammoon Manor itself, there are many towns of historic interest in the area easily accessible by car, including, Shaftesbury (20 mins), Milton Abbas (20 mins), Cerne Abbas - the home of the famous giant (32 mins), Dorchester (39 mins), and not least Sturminster Newton where Hardy lived when writing his novel ‘Return of the Native’ (10 mins). Slightly further afield - Salisbury Cathedral (40 mins), Longleat (40 mins), Lulworth Cove and the famous Jurassic coast (50) mins, Stonehenge (45 mins) and Bath (60 mins). There is of course much more and Georgina and I are happy to advise on local walks, places to eat and many other places of interest.

Many years ago living overseas, I came across a picture of Hammoon Manor (I believe in the Times). I thought what I wouldn’t give to live in such a picturesque house in such idyllic surroundings never thinking for a moment that I could be so blessed. Yet here I am with my family - a story in itself! Having completely restored the house and converted the barns to luxury 5 star holiday cottages, we are truly blessed to live in such peaceful and idyllic surroundings in Thomas Hardy's Dorset with all its history and beauty. It always gives us such pleasure to see out guests enjoying Hammoon and all that Dorset and the surrounding area has to offer. There is so much to experience and see in this wonderful county, from the world heritage sites of Stonehenge and the Jurassic Coast to Longleat, Sherborne Abbey and Castle, Shaftesbury, Dorchester, Salisbury Cathedral, Bath and so much more are all within easy reach. Alternatively, you can just enjoy our walks, and relax in the gardens and do nothing!
