Hi there fellow travelers!
There isn't anything better than arriving in an exciting new place and instantly being able to see it from a local's perspective, am I right? (Well, maybe a few things...) In honor of all those who have provided me with hospitality in foreign lands, I'd like to share my perfectly located, charming apartment with others who value these experiences as much as I do.
I'm a PhD student at Concordia University, studying cinema and philosophy. Though I'm originally from San Francisco, I've been living in Montreal for almost 5 years, and I love the culture here, so I would be happy to make suggestions for your time in the city. I also love having conversations with people from all over, but can leave you to yourself, as well.
I share my 3 bedroom top floor apartment with a sweet and frisky grey kitty (Rocket), who would love to sit on your lap if you're willing, but knows when to stay away too.
Your room is cozy, warm and bright, newly painted and sparsely furnished with a double bed, dresser, small fan (sorry no AC), and small lamp.
The apartment, which I rent, has not been renovated or remodeled, which means it has both charming original details and its fair share of cracks and older style (some rather outdated) fixtures. So, if you're super attached to a sleek, modern space, you might prefer a more established nearby BnB or hotel. I prefer the bohemian feeling of living in an apartment like this (cracks and all) to a renovated one, but I know that's a personal taste issue. So be forewarned, it's not perfect, but it's cute and comfortable! :)
I must say that live one of the most beautiful, quiet, tree-lined, little streets in the "Plateau" district of Montreal, close to numerous cafes, parks, shops, bars and restaurants!
The Metro is nearby, which will get you to Old Montreal or downtown in 20 min or less. You can walk to McGill in 20 min., the mountain (Mont Royal) in 10, and the Latin Quarter in 15. Duluth St. (a restaurant row) is a block an a half away. Boulevard St. Laurent (the Main) is two minutes away, where you'll find many shopping, drinking, dining and entertainment options, including Schwartz's famous smoked meat deli (the oldest deli in Canada). Or, if you're not into the meat, there's a vegan shop, and several vegan restaurants, which are equally convenient to walk to. Boulevard St. Denis is 3 minutes away and provides other such options. There's a great little bar/pub on the corner called Else's, as well as a 24 hour grocery 5 minutes away. The beautiful St. Louis Square is a few blocks away, too. There's even a free indoor art deco pool five minutes away, so bring your swim suit any time of year. This really is the best location in the city!
I have a washer, but no dryer. There are a few laundromats within a 3-5 blocks.
There is free street parking but you must pay attention to the signs. Reserved parking shows, with arrows, the zone it includes, and street cleaning is marked, as well.
In the warmer months (starting in April) you can grab a "Bixi" bike a block away and take a ride through several nearby parks, around the gorgeous neighborhood, or downtown ($7/day). I'd be more than happy to show you how to do this, time permitting. I subscribe to the Bixi system myself, and just love it.
I have tons of mainly "artsy" movies, fiction, nonfiction and avant-garde (I study experimental documentary), which you're welcome to watch on the tv in the living room. I don't have cable, so there is no television watching here, unless it's through your computer, which is possible with the wireless Internet connection.
If you're a smoker, that's fine, but you'll have to go out on to the balcony to have a cigarette (no smoking inside or out the window, please!).
I love to cook, and I welcome you to cook for yourself here. I have basic items (seasonings, oil, etc.) that you can use a little of to help make your meal, but if you use anything substantial, I would appreciate it if you replaced it. There's an exotic game/organic/free-range butcher half a block away; a produce market a block and a half away; a cheese shop, an Hungarian deli, a Spanish specialties shop, numerous boulangeries (bakeries) and patisseries (pastry shops) all right down the street--really great options for composing your own meals around here.
Basic breakfast items will be provided, such as coffee, tea, bread, jam, cereal, milk. If there's something specific you'd like for breakfast, like yogurt, OJ, bagels, or bananas, just let me know ahead of time and I'll pick some up before you get here. I won't be cooking any breakfast, however.
I also provide a towel for each person and the use of a hair dryer, soap, shampoo and conditioner.
As for checking in and out, I'm happy to make a plan with you so I can do my best to be available at the times of your choosing. Please let me know both your arrival and departure times when you book the room, if possible. I do ask that you be respectful of my time by being as precise as possible in advance, and texting if you'll be early or late as soon as you can, so that I'm able to make plans of my own and I don't get stuck waiting at the apartment all day (I'm sure YOU wouldn't do that, but others have). Let's start your amazing Montreal vacation off on the right foot with great communication!
In your introductory email, please tell me a little about yourself, and the person you're bringing with you should that be the case, especially if you are new to the site or you don't have much in your profile. (Just a couple of lines; don't knock yourself out.) I'm a person and not a hotel, so I need a little to go on to feel that I can expect a respectful encounter when I invite people into my home. Oh and don't forget to read the "House Rules" before you arrive so we can all know what to expect.
That's it! I'm happy to answer any questions you might have.
Looking forward to meeting you!

This experience was exactly as billed. All info on her page is completely accurate. Comfy bed with great linens, separate heating. Poppy was helpful without being intrusive. I needed space the first few days and got it. Lovely visit thereafter. Easy to follow public transport instructions made getting to her house from the central rail station easy peasy. Would love to go back and visit when there is LESS winter. Thanks, Poppy.
Great location, in a quiet street! The room and the apartment were clean, lighty and fully provided with everything you could need!
Papagena is very nice, talkative and interesting person!
Papagena's flat is perfectly located; lots of excellent restaurants, cafes, bars and interesting shops. And she is a wonderful host, happy to share her knowledge of the city. nice linens on the bed. I would be happy to stay with her again.
Poppy was very accommodating and friendly. After we checked in, she provided the keys and wifi straight away and offered brownies she has just made which was kind. She suggested us good places to eat, where to shop and on transport to airport. She joined us for food and drink one night and it was nice to talk with her. Her flat was exactly as she described, bohemian style, cosy, nice and clean. Location was perfect, close to St Louis Boulvard where there are lots of shops and places to eat, but far enough so it was not noisy at all. It's close to subway but it does not take too long to walk to many good places including few parks close by. I would definitely recommend staying at Poppy's flat and would stay there again if I visit Montreal. Thanks Poppy for great hosting.
Nice flat, good location with nice food and shopping nearby. Also not far from the city center, but still a quite street,
Staying at Poppy's place was great. The apartment is in a hip and central location, with loads of awesome food and shopping nearby, but the place itself is on a very quiet street. Rocket the cat was pretty quick to warm up to me and he was fun to be around. Poppy wasn't there for most of my stay but she was easygoing and friendly when I got to finally meet her.
I look forward to staying there again!
Great location -- really central, lots of great restaurants & shops near by. Poppy was very helpful and responsive. The place is simple & clean, no complaints.
Poppy's place was comfortable and well located . Her neighborhood is a great with many things to see and do in all directions. Thank you Poppy for letting us staying with you!
We stayed with Poppy for the first two weeks after our arrival in Montreal for work, while we sorted out paperwork and found a place to live. It was the perfect introduction to life in the Plateau, and Montreal in general. Poppy was super helpful and friendly, and went way beyond her obligations as a host in helping us out, showing us around, and giving lots of recommendations about places to eat, drink, shop, and visit. We liked the location of her flat so much that we chose to live in the same neighbourhood - walking distance to so many places, and loads going on. This was a great first airbnb experience, and we highly recommend a stay with Poppy.
Great host and great neighborhood! Poppy was always happy to share her favorites places and activities in Montreal making it easy to get oriented in the city.
