Interaction with Guests
We send you a Welcome Package by FedEx a month prior to your stay. The Welcome Package includes a map, detailed driving directions, the house key, and lots of useful info for your stay.
Our neighborhood, Paradise Park, is a true paradise! Just stroll along the ocean cliffs and see/hear/smell the crashing surf and you'll know why. It's so peaceful you can hear birds all day and frogs and night, and the Big Island air is the certified cleanest in the United States.
The Big Island is BIG. You really need a car to get around! Luckily car rental is really inexpensive on the Big Island, starting at only around $25/day, and all the big rental companies (Avis, Hertz, National...) serve both Hilo and Kona airports. You can also try Discount Hawaii Car Rentals for even lower rates.
There are good roads to all the principal sites (volcano, waterfalls, black sand beaches, etc.) but if you want to explore remote areas, without paved roads, you should consider renting a 4 wheel drive vehicle.
1 night minimum stay most of the year, 5 night minimum during holidays (Christmas and Easter timeframes).

The view was amazing. The rental was clean and comfortable for our party of 6. It was too cold to use the pool but we enjoyed the hot tub. Great place to stay on the big island.
Host Laura was great about communication and information. Hale Mar was our third AirBnB stay on the island and the setting was fantastic, right on the edge of a lava flow with gigantic waves crashing up against it. Truly a fantastic view. The pool and hot tub were nice as well. Unfortunately, the house itself is a 1980 time capsule with thrift store leftover furniture and art, corroded fixtures and faded laminate floors upstairs; not really the "luxury" advertised. More like "as is" or "so what." A bit of landscaping would be nice, too. With some effort it could easily be a fantastic place. However, the whole property just felt neglected and dingy. Unfortunately, we wouldn't stay here again.
We are truly shocked and disappointed to read this review. BTW, the house wasn't even in existence in the 1980s! it was just built brand new in 2004, and all the furnishings were bought new too, the best the local furniture stores have to offer, solid mahogany, teak and leather, nothing from a "thrift shop" or "leftover"! Additionally, we are constantly replacing and updating to keep things in order. Everyone's tastes are different, and we REALLY sorry you were disappointed: sometimes the fact that everything located on the oceanfront is constantly getting gets rusty - which we are constantly working on buffing, replacing and repainting - might create the impression it's not maintained, but fortunately, most of our guests feel it is the "luxury" we describe. We will keep on diligently maintaining Hale Mar to be the best that it can be. For potential future guests, please read our other happy guests' reviews to see that this was just one person's unfortunate perception/experience.
We absolutely loved staying at Hale Mar before heading off to the Kohala resort area! It was wonderful to fall asleep and wake up to the sound of the ocean. The kids enjoyed exploring the small tide pools in front of the house. We saw rainbows and turtles from the lava ledge - so peaceful. The oceanfront setting with doors from every room to the outside was dream living.
The beds and linens were comfortable. The house was clean and ready for our arrival. They even arranged for groceries to be delivered since we arrived on Thanksgiving day! We enjoyed cooking in the well stocked kitchen and grilling on the charcoal grill. The house is a drive from everything so when we went out exploring, we made sure to stop and get whatever we needed until our next outing.
We were a party of 8 people (4 adults, 4 children). Luckily the youngest 3 fit on a queen air mattress since one of the bedrooms is small and has just a single bed. The master bedroom is huge. The 2nd bedroom and the office are average size and the 3rd bedroom is small (and doesn't face the oceanside).
Overall, there was plenty of space to relax and enjoy throughout the property. There is enough seating for all of us to eat at the table and play games. Even the breakfast bar has lots of stools. It is much bigger than it appears in the photos.
We will defintely be back!
The house was even better than I expected. This was my first experience using Airbnb and I would do it again. We only had one problem that we needed to contact the host about, and Laura was quick to answer our call and fix the issue. (We couldn't get the safe unlocked.)
I do have a couple of minor suggestions, however. We had our senior parents along with us and it was hard for them to get in and out of the swimming pool. A ladder would be a nice improvement. Also, we had unusually warm weather during our stay and really could have used air conditioning.
One thing about Hilo that I was not aware of is the noise the tree frogs make at night. This can be enjoyable or annoying so I would suggest taking earplugs just in case.
We loved the house and the beautiful location. We were very close to the volcano. The other thing I really liked was that we really were off the beaten path and explored many areas not known to most tourists. I feel as though we had an experience that a local would enjoy!
Our Host was most pleasant and thoughtfully responsive to all of our needs and requests. Active communications before during and following our stay with helpful information and suggestions of sights and bites locally, as well as throughout the island. Everything we anticipated was provided and then some. Hale Mar Hawaii is a fabulous host and offers a lovely place to rest, relax and rejuvenate. Our stay followed Hurricane Iselle and while we were staying in Kona, our Host contacted us to let us know the property was out of power and concerned for us to find a place to stay. We were given plenty of time to find something yet we opted to hold out as long as possible to see if power would be restored. The entire time, our Host did not stop working to make our stay happen and continued in active communication as well as gave us options for other locations to lodge if power was not restored in time. We were delighted to be able to stay and so grateful for the concern of our host to work tirelessly under stress to make our vacation complete and complete it was! We had a lovely time in the luxury of this treasure of a home. Everything was clean, beautiful and perfect. The photos accurately portray the property and yet the experience was so much more lovely than we ever expected. Every single moment spent there was an absolute gift! We cooked most of our meals there as the kitchen was well stocked and we enjoyed inside dining as well as poolside during our stay. We were able to do laundry easily and efficiently and while we didn't utilize the well maintained bicycles we did hope to. It was absolutely perfect for us to stay here at the conclusion of our Hawaiian visit to relax and rejuvenate before heading back home. I highly recommend this home for its location, amenities and of course for the assurance of a wonderful Host. Thank you Thank you, Hale Mar Hawaii!
Upon arrival to Hale Mar we were instantly in love. The first thing that you notice is the impeccable landscaping in the front yard as you pull into the driveway. The moment you enter the house you realize that you are in for a special treat of a vacation. The interior finishing and decorations are well appointed and not overdone. The house feels open, breezy and comfortable. Of particular mention is the upstairs master bedroom. This suite is about 1/3 of the total square footage of the entire house. If you stay in this room you won't be disappointed. The other rooms downstairs are a bit on the smaller side but besides sleeping I don't imagine you will be spending much time in those rooms anyway with what awaits you outside in the back yard.
When entering the back yard for the first time we were totally floored with how beautiful the hot tub and pool area looked. The house is seated so close to the ocean you literally can see the water splashing upwards from the cliffs when you're in the back yard or the upstairs bedroom.
The cliffs behind the property are one of the most beautiful sights I've ever seen. We took multiple long walks up and down the coast, the beauty never got old.
As beautiful as the pictures are for this rental, they don't even do the property justice. It just isn't possible to capture the beauty of this place on camera, you have to experience it to believe it.
The only warning I would make is that this might not be the best location for people with small children because ocean waves pound 20 foot high cliffs and I would be very concerned about any running or playing near them.
Laura the host was very responsive before and after I arrived, answering all my questions promptly. Everything was handled as professionally as possible and I would HIGHLY recommend this property to anyone looking for a beautiful and relaxing place to stay on the east side of the big island. There were plenty of hikes, waterfalls, and other excursions to do that didn't take more than 30-60 minutes to get to.
The house is incredible, even cooler than the picture, having arrived at night, it was incredible to wake up to this great sunrise.. The house has EVERYTHING anybody can want, and we will sure be back there again!! Loved the town of Hilo too.. Thanks for everything..Dyonne
