A quite private space in a beautiful setting. The guest suite occupies the lower floor of our hilltop home. Enjoy forest views and quite nights while being only 20 minutes from the buzz of Silicon Valley or the beaches of the Monterey Bay.
A ridgetop retreat., peaceful, private, home in the Loma Prieta area of the Santa Cruz Mts. An ideal location for business and pleasure. You can have your toes in the sand on the Monterey Bay or be in Silicon Valley in 20-30 minutes.

Plus lots of outdoor living space including a spectacular bar area and outdoor living room, or sit out by the Koi pond and be lulled by the sound of falling water. We want you to feel welcome, this isn't a chain hotel after all. Part of the fun of airbnb'g is meeting new friends! Bring your favorite beverage(s), the outdoor bar area is a great place to spend summer evenings, getting to know new friends and sharing ideas about what to do next. We're natives here and happy to share our insights based on your desires.
For convenience there's a great market with a wonderful selection of prepared gourmet foods to go, a great butcher counter, and local wines only 2 miles away. Speaking of wines there are several great boutique wineries located within just a few miles including Burrell School, Loma Prieta, Silver Mountain, David Bruce, MJA and several more.
While only 20 minutes to downtown Los Gatos at the Southwestern end of the Santa Clara (aka: Silicon) Valley the Loma Prieta area is rural with towering Redwoods and open spaces. To get to the beaches in the Santa Cruz area; simply release your parking brake and you are on the way, its all downhill from here. We are approximately 13 miles from Capitola Beach and you only need to turn left out of our driveway to get there as the road we live off of goes directly to Capitola. Capitola is a funky little beach town that borders Santa Cruz to the south with excellent dinning, shopping, nightlife and surfing. Capitola Beach itself is an excellent place to take the family for a day of fun in the sun as it is well protected and Capitola Village is steps away. Turning right out of our driveway takes you towards the Silicon Valley and all it has to offer. 12 miles from our home and you are in Downtown Los Gatos, the best little town in Silicon valley with great dinning, shopping and nightlife. If you have business to attend to during your stay, the heart of Silicon Valley's technology industry is approx. 30 minutes away but of course you can be fully "connected" or disconnected here if you like
Both San Francisco and Big Sur are easy day trips. San Francisco is 70 miles to the north, Big Sur 90 miles south. Monterey and all it has to offer is about an hour's drive south on California's Hwy 1 with Big Sur another hour's drive south of Monterey. Don't miss the world-class Monterey Bay Aquarium. Hwy 1 south of Monterey is one of the most scenic drives in the world and the Big Sur area is magical. Nature lovers will appreciate Big Basin and Henry Cowell State Parks as well, both renowned for their old growth Redwood groves. If you have never been in an old growth Redwood grove, it’s a truly spiritual experience. While we have lots of beautiful Redwoods on the property they are mere pups in comparison even at over 100 ft. tall.
If you're a golfer, besides Spanish Bay, Pebble Beach, and Spyglass in the Monterey area, close by is one of the best courses anywhere; Pasatiempo Golf Club and the DeLaVeaga Golf course is just down the road, which incidentally also boasts one of the best Frisbee golf courses to be found. For family fun there's The Santa Cruz Boardwalk with a great wooden roller coaster plus many other rides and attractions. Roaring Camp Railroad with trains and a zip line tour of the Redwood forest's canopy. "The Mystery Spot" is always a hit with the kids. World-class surfing, sailing, fishing and whale watching are all within a half-hour's drive. If you’re a Mountain Biker, there’s world-class single tracks in near-by Soquel Demonstration forest. Of course if all you want to do is relax and decompress just hang out here by the pond and let the sounds of flowing water wash your stress away. Surfers, great breaks like Pleasure Point, The Hook, and Steamer's Lane are all close by.
Car lovers and gear heads this is heaven! Laguna Seca Race Track is less than an hour away. This is a perfect base to take in the Monterey Historics, Concours Italiano and the Pebble Beach Concours D'élégance. Soquel/San Jose Rd. is a great drive/ride, with beautiful scenery and wonderful twisties for those of us who enjoy a well executed apex. Motorcyclists will love the ride on Soquel/San Jose Rd. and many others we can suggest. Bonus, they just (July 2012) repaved Soquel/San Jose Rd., its like butter! A finer set of corners would be hard to find.
The weather in the Santa Cruz Mountains is about as perfect as you can find. Summer brings cool foggy early mornings followed by warm sunny days and cool evenings. It almost never rains in the summer here so no worries there, make your plans. Winter, the temps are moderate, with frost only occasionally, but it can rain very hard at times. Spring and Fall are glorious, our favorite times of the year. Lots of fall color in the yard and surrounding area. Spring brings a profusion of green and blossoms. No matter what time of year, it’s always a good idea to have a sweater or light jacket handy as the evenings can cool off quickly because of the costal influence (or as I like to say "our life giving fog"). Redwoods only thrive where there's regular fog. It is not unusual to see temps in the 80 - 90 range during the day and 60's in the evenings.
If you are flying, the San Jose Airport is 30 minutes away and SFO is about an hour's drive but renting a car is a must as there is no public transportation that services our area.
We can also arrange for a couples massage on the deck if you're so inclined. My wife and I can whip up a family style dinner, an evening BBQ or we can have a guest chef to prepare a wonderful candlelight dinner served under the stars. I'll bar tend, fixing up tasty cocktails to enjoy the sunset with. Want Breakfast? A lunch packed to go? Dinner? Whatever it is you would like to have or do while you are here let us know and we'll try to make it happen. We look forward to meeting you.
You enter though the front door to the house. Guests are free to use the kitchen (there's an extra refrigerator in the garage too), and the entire yard including The Shark Bite (bar area, BYOB) and Sunset deck. We also encourage our guests to slow down and enjoy the yard, have your coffee out by the Koi pond or enjoy a glass of wine on the Sunset deck in the evening.
Interaction with Guests
We love to play host and share experiences with our guests. Usually we end up having evening drinks and enjoying appetizers (email hidden) with our guests, getting to know new people is the reason we do this.
What we love about our neighborhood is that we don't live in a neighborhood. Our house sits on a sunny hill top surrounded by the Redwood forest with the closest neighbor's house a couple hundred yards away. While we live in a rural area, Silicon Valley is 15 minutes to the north and the Monterey Bay is 15 minutes to the south, great for business and pleasure,
There is no public transit available in the area, so if you are coming from afar, plan on renting a car.
Other Things to Note
Our little road i(1/4 mile) is one-lane but has very little traffic so we toot our horn to warn others as we go up the road. If you do encounter another car there are places to pull off for to pass. Usually the car going downhill must back-up to yield right-of-way but sometimes that's not practical so be courteous. We've lived here 18 years and I've encountered another car going to other way maybe a dozen times so no worries, just be aware and drive slowly.

Our stay with Mark and Hope was nothing short of wonderful! As hosts, they are kind, thoughtful, generous and very easy to talk to. Shortly after meeting them, my husband and I felt like we were hanging out with old friends. While I spent one day at a day long retreat, they graciously offered to take my husband out for happy hour and to meet their friends. My husband had a great time and I enjoyed meeting up with them later to share a pizza and get to know their inner circle. Not only did it feel like a great match between hosts and guests, but our dogs got along famously as well. Kona, their dog, was a complete sweetie pie! I'm sure I'dren misses her already!
As for the accommodations, I could not have asked for more. Everything was clean, the bedroom was spacious, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom had lovely modernized touches. Mark and Hope even provide a private coffee maker, tea and cookies for their guests in the room. Their property is a retreat in and of itself. Situated on the top of a hill, surrounded by redwood trees, overlooking the valley, I felt like I was away from it all and able to completely relax. Hope's delicious homemade blueberry muffins on Sunday morning were the icing on the cake.
Lastly, As a dog owner, finding a place where I don't have to worry about keeping my pooch on a leash is invaluable. It was so wonderful to open up a door and know that he could wander with his new buddy and be OK doing so.
If you're hesitating about staying with these two, don't. A stay with Mark and Hope will leave you feeling rested, rejuvenated and ready to return to whatever responsibilities await at home. You may even make new friends, too!
Staying with Mark and Hope was an awesome experience! They are incredibly hospitable and they make you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Anything we needed, they were more than happy to accommodate. And their place is just breathtaking. It's so serene and peaceful. From the koi pond, to the outdoor bar, the porch, the outdoor bed to relax and look up at the stars (which are super vibrant; we saw several shooting stars!), I really can't pick a favorite part.
Mark and Hope also do an excellent job of making you comfortable, making sure you have everything you need, and giving you space to enjoy a romantic and relaxing getaway. We loved our stay and we would definitely stay with them again!
I highly recommend staying with Mark & Hope. We were looking for a place for the night last minute, and thankfully we found this listing. Everything was perfect. We drove up a really pretty country road to get to their house, stopped off at a great nearby market to pickup some food and drinks, and when we got to the house we were pleased with how lovely and clean it was. We were a bit apprehensive about renting a house where the owners would be there, but Mark & Hope were extremely nice and let us do our own thing, while at the same time letting us know we were welcome to use their kitchen to cook dinner and to come hang out with them and their friends outside. We were very happy we took them up on their offer -- as we spent a terrific hour or so chatting with them and their friends on their outdoor deck in front of a fire pit and under the stars. They were very thoughtful and offered us drinks (wine, a delicious local IPA, and Mark's homemade cocktails), and they are genuinely nice, wonderful people who we really enjoyed talking to. Their dog Kona is also awesome!
Hope provided us with some coffee and breakfast in the morning, and Mark even helped us bring our bags back out to our car.
Overall it was way better than a hotel and the best place we stayed in during our 4 day road trip up the coast. Highly recommended. Thanks again!
Our journey to Santa Cruz lead us to Mark and Hope's beautiful retreat. Their place offers an exclusive, mountainous escape with majestic views while maintaining the convenience of a short drive to Santa Cruz or San Jose. The outdoor patio offers amazing sunsets and The Sharkbite Bar is one of a kind (their outdoor patio bar)! Great people, great hosts...we enjoyed their company over wine and hors d'oeuvres!
Mark and Hope were very welcoming to my family for the weekend we were in Santa Cruz for a graduation. Their home is a peaceful hideaway with beautiful views from their large deck. Highly recommended.
We were on our way between San Francisco and Monterey and wanted a stop in the Santa Cruz area. We were a little unsure about what we had gotten into with the drive to their house, but it was paradise when we arrived. Mark and Hope are awesome hosts and make you feel like part of the family. On their encouragement, we shopped for beef to put on the barbeque and Mark even cooked it (perfectly) for us. Watching the sunset over the Santa Cruz mountains was pure joy, as was the fire in the garden to warm us up. Mustn't forget to mention all the other little treats like homemade biscotti (we also got a care package for the road) and the special breakfast treats. Really loved our special Californian experience.
We were so lucky to be able to snag this beautiful find! Mark and Hope's home helped make our trip up the coast one of the most comfortable and memorable road trips of all time.
They take your room seriously, meticulous care and attention to detail with all sorts of luxuries and creature comforts in your room.
It's worth the trip. Mark is so knowledgeable about the area and will help you plan the perfect trip to suit your interests (including suggestions for some of the best tacos the coast has to offer). Let yourself be pampered and plan on staying for a couple days to take in sights of star gazing on the outdoor bed, dreaming by the koi pond, and meandering through the forest with their ever-charming guide pooch.
We're definitely coming back for a romantic getaway.
Favorite quote: "Good looks, wealth and education are often wasted on the slow. Everything in moderation and moderation is the first to go."
Husband, father, avid downhill skier, frustrated landscape artist and builder/craftsman, I enjoy creating things and the company of others. Empty twisty back roads, a firm suspension, well bolstered seats, manual transmissions, and a good apex makes my motor rev. Uncrowded steeps covered in feet of fluffy powder, blue sky, and mountain vistas are my favorite things. Hanging out with friends at our outdoor bar, drinking, eating, talking, laughing, enjoying the evening, reveling in the beauty that surrounds us.
We offer a private guest suite (1 or 2 rooms), in a quite, beautiful setting. A romantic get-away, relaxing weekend, a (email hidden) after a day of mountain biking, a family vacation adventure or whatever you choose, we'll do our best to accommodate your needs and style. Join us for a marguerita while watching a spectacular sunset on the deck, or enjoy a bottle of the superb local wines with your lover while watching the sun set in your window. Get to know us, share your experiences and find out what you might want to try while you're the area or have a private evening, just let us know what you desire.
