Live inside a piece of Kyoto history at our lovingly restored machiya, originally built in 1920. While a 2020 renovation introduced modern comforts like floor heating, the soul of the house lives on. Gaze up at the ancient, exposed beams in the living room—silent storytellers of a century gone by. The entrance features a stunning open ceiling, a remnant of its past as a workshop for Nishijin-ori weaving.

The space
•Layout: This spacious 75-square-meter house is perfect for groups. The 1st floor includes a living room with floor heating, a full kitchen, a large bedroom, a bathroom with a rainfall shower and bathtub, and a laundry room. The 2nd floor has a Japanese-style room for 3, a second bathroom with a rainfall shower, and a toilet.
•Modern Amenities: The home is equipped with a TV, high-speed Wi-Fi, air conditioning, an air purifier, a washing machine, and a fully-stocked kitchen. Complimentary tea and coffee are also provided. For your stay, we offer premium POLA bath products, a hairdryer, and a full set of toiletries.
•What we love about this house: The incredible history of this 1920s building, with its original exposed beams and a stunning open-ceiling entrance that was once part of a Nishijin-ori weaving workshop.
•Family-Friendly: Children’s amenities such as chairs, beds, and kitchenware are available upon request, as are a rice cooker and oven. Please kindly let us know in advance if you need any of these.
•Nearby Attractions: Your historic retreat is perfectly positioned for cultural immersion. A 5-minute walk brings you to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, where a vibrant flea market is held on the 25th of each month. A 15-minute stroll leads to the magnificent Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion).

At Kouhaku, we believe a machiya is more than a building. It is a living gallery of Kyoto's ancient aesthetic-a placewhere architecture, craf, and culture converge. Each of our 22 Kyomachiya townhouses has been carefullv restored andcurated as a private sanctuary, inviting you to slow down, lookclosely, and experience Kyoto not as a tourist, but as aresident. In a world that moves too fast, we offer you somethingrare: the unhurried pleasure of Kyoto living. We lookforward to welcoming you.
