Martin and I have been spending a whole week at Áine's on our honeymoon along the wild Atlantic coastline. The place is located beautifully just outside the lovely town Kenmare. Unfortunately the accommodation couldn't meet all the high expectations the presentation on airbnb rose. The house doesn't seem to be equipped to work as a guest house (e.g. heating, warm water), it hasn't been specifically clean and conversations with Áine sometimes tended to get quite edgy. She seemed to feel more comfortable the less people are around - so we came to having a really nice talk with her on the day we left, when it was just her and us. Nonetheless the amazing landscape surrounding the house and the healthy breakfast made up for the most of it ...

isn't Airbnb specifically about affording guests unique access to people's homes not quite accommodation equipped... these quests were architects yet overlooked or failed to figure out that the heating in underfloor . ...communication would have solved most of this guests gripes....i give Airbnb a ten and fifteen euro per night lower rate than than others yet my reviews by higher paying guests are far more generous...not meaning to boast but 32 out of 40 reviews counted just now giving 10 out of 10 for Kenmare Eco Lodge...... expectations not being met is one thing...honeymooners should definitely be in the king room ...however this guest booked too late for it..(the king room guests came to me each morning and discussed what a beautiful house I had and thanked me daily for delicious breakfast). .if these guests were not entirely happy I should have liked to have known at the outset. We have a very good five star just a mile downriver.

This B&B was a disappointment and not what I had expected from the description. The guest area of the house is in shocking disrepair with broken door knobs, latches tied with dishtowels to keep doors from jamming, light switches that short out when turned on, loose headboards, etc. The bathroom does not afford privacy as the windows have no curtains, and the opaque film stuck on the glass has an uncovered see-through strip on all sides an inch in diameter. This is made worse by the fact that the shower has no curtain and is not separated from the rest of the bathroom, the showerhead sprouting from the ceiling across from the toilet. The room was dusty with cobwebs stretched under the desk and hanging in clumps from the wires. The outside view was obstructed by an old shed with broken wooden chairs and pails of paint. The patio door opens out to a bench with rotting planks and rusting patio furniture. The photographs of the description of Hemp House & Eco Lodge are quite misleading, and I am surprised by the other reviews. Perhaps there are better rooms – mine was quite bad, and I have photos of what I have described. The surrounding area is indeed beautiful (it’s Kenmare!), and the non-guest areas which the host, Aine, uses for herself such as the kitchen, living room and dining room are in great shape. Unfortunately, Aine is edgy and unreceptive to any negative comments about the B&B, referring to one set of guests as being “sniffy” (must have been the dust, I say), and on several occasions saying “this is an eco-lodge”. My recommendation: if dirt and dilapidation is your idea of on eco-lodge, then this is the place for you. If not, pick another one. This one is neither comfortable nor pleasant.

Amar cancelled some days and wanted his money back! The previous occasion where I had kept deposit only the agency said it was 'very generous of me'. So I thought it more the norm to not take the hit for a guest's change of mind. Amar left this place with a smile on his face, not really the act of one reflected in the comments above. Amar's negative response above is nothing but VINDICTIVENESS WRIT LARGE. Quite honestly anybody who found such problems with a place would have packed up and left instantly or would at least have complained in the proper fashion DIRECTLY to me. Amar had no complaints while here and as I said in my review sat and talked about himself and his book for hours. We had quite a decent conversation ourselves the first night about writing and the literary life in general. Amar is related to Hanif Kureishi who is famour for writing 'My Beautiful Launderette' and other scripts. Amar is now publishing himself and showed us one of his books. Talking of things literary. 'Sniffy' is not a word that would be common to my vernacular so I have been definitely wronged in the matter of calling a guest 'sniffy'. Discussing other guests in the negative is also not something I would do in a humurous way/for the sake of a humorous storytelling and, quite the contrary to what Amar thinks my receptiveness to comments from guest is always taken on board. I am constantly re-investing. Amar did not walk the grounds at all as far as I remember. Neither did he make any complaint or suggestion for improvement at all regarding the issues of sought to raise hereabove. As I said, Amar left this place with a smile on his face, not really the act of one reflected in the comments above. I gave Amar a kind review and the only thing I would add is that from the tone of Amar's emails even before he arrived he appeared to be solipsistic. The one thing I must say is the house is CLEAN CLEAN (URL HIDDEN) is a new house, seven years old, OAK flooring which is frequently washed. Amars room floor and bathroom floor were all washed before he arrived..cleanliness is and never has been an issue here.....Amars response is vindictiveness writ large. Privacy is afforted by the LOCATION Amar, there are no neighbours or anybody to look in the window at you. This is an Eco house with lots of lovely bird nests and birds do have a tendency to defecate on exterior seating (and if you sit there sometimes on guest's heads!) like the one outside your bedroom's glass door. But seriously there are three outdoor seating areas and the one outside Amar's door is not really where any guest would choose to sit, (too windy and view of shed) This is a country working house Amar not a hotel, shed is in practical use. (Shed is built in the wrong place - it is going to be moved and made into an Eco Cabin - Rustic Contemporary style watch this space) P.S. Amar, The Walk-in Shower Room - we happen to call them walk-in shower rooms, maybe you don't have that in Canada but we certainly do; curtainless, great for wheelchair access, great for splashing around. We actually regard them as a bit of a luxury, in our little country. Privacy - the next house is five minutes walk away - cows don't really poke their heads in any of the windows, they are fenced off in their fields.

We enjoyed our stay at the Eco Lodge B&B. The home is lovely and situated in the country, but still very accessible to Kenmare for any sightseeing or hiking. We did not get to spend as much time with our host as we'd have liked, but she was available for any questions and had lots of suggestions of things to do in the area. Áine made a very nice breakfast for us while we were there of fresh, healthy, and delicious fruit, fresh bread, grains, and yogurt. Coming from the US, where heavy breakfasts can be the standard, this was refreshing and very enjoyable. Áine had a number of pamphlets available describing tourist destinations around the area which she made available to us for our stay. She had a lot of ideas about what we should do, and seemed disappointed when we did not follow all of her advice, but I think that was just because she wanted us to see and experience the very best of her part of the country. She provides directions which I strongly endorse using to get to her home - we did not the first time, using (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) instead, and had a very harrowing journey on some tiny roads. Her route is much easier though it can be challenging the first time to recognize all of the landmarks, as streets in Kenmare aren't always labeled/very clearly. It took us a little bit to get a hang of the use of landmarks for directions, but she was very helpful in that too - clarifying directions for us as needed. The room we stayed in was very charming, offering us peace and quiet of the country.

Unfortunately, I find myself having to write a negative review if my stay with Anne Barrett, I am an older woman, working as a clinical social worker. i came to Ireland for 3 months, I booked a stay with Anne Barrett for one month. After 2 weeks I felt forced to leave. Anne has an attractive house with a beautiful walk to the river and she can be a charming hostess. However, in my understanding, since I was staying for a month and received a discount for this, Anne didn't consider me or treat me as a regular guest. Without going into the hurtful details, Anne continually treated me in a critical and very disrespectful way, until I felt so unsafe in her house that i needed to leave. Anne wouldn't give me a refund for the 2 weeks I wouldn't be staying with her, so I turned to Airbnb. I thank them for resolving the issue and finding a way to refund me most of the money thru their services.

Response from Áine, In Kenmare Bay:
As Airbnb records will attest, I had arranged a refund for Marcia within hours of her decision to leave - Marcia had no quibble with a refund of a third of her total stay fee. This woman arrived with expectations far beyond the room only rate of the lowly sum of Euros18. She completely ignored my emails about observances regarding other guests on a bed and breakfast rate. Boundaries were continually crossed and re-iteration of observances became challenging. As Marcia had no car (and I would be happy to offer excursions for guests once the right generosity of spirit prevails) but in Marcia's case and in order to get her away from her habit of soliciting other guests at the breakfast table for rides to town, I introduced her to a neighbour whom I suggested might like become her driver. This worked well for Marcia although her exaggerations and untruths - such as that I would not give her a refund - had the effect of maligning me and causing people to take sides. Marcia Kriesel is a U.S. lady based in Israel and speaks of herself as a peace keeper.

I run this ecological B&B made out of hemp* Sleeps x 6. Rooms from E70 per night.. I have travelled a good deal myself and understand the value of meeting locals who can give detailed, personal advice. I think if you like the images of my house and the offering of natural/organic etc. you will love Kenmare and environs anyway and I try to provide information to give a personalized portal into the best of its many hidden offerings.
I am a regular hiker, explorer of the area close to hand and the two peninsulas and can give you daily guidance at breakfast time on what most suited to your desires and depending on the day's weather. I have produced a book on the urban heritage of the town and appreciate Kenmare's special character as a fine example of a 17th planned estate town. I can advise on best authentic food, music, eating and shopping experiences of which Kenmare is well supplied.

If you like nature and natural surroundings, outstandingly stunning landscape, great hill trails, eco-living, conversation, sitting in the library room, exploring mountain paths and ancient monuments then going into town for fine dining experiences and live music you will find plenty to do here for several days on end.

I have travelled around most parts of Ireland so I can offer advice on your onward journey from here.
