Room in a home

Your own room in a home, plus access to shared spaces.
Casa Misterio is a two-room guesthouse as well as our family home. Expect to get an authentic glimpse into real life in Merida while sharing a beautiful, artistic space with a bilingual family and four sweet cats. Our home is a rebuilt colonial on the edge of Merida's Centro Historico in the friendly, homey neighborhood of San Sebastian. We love sharing our home with guests, whom we hope will welcome a chance to be a part of local life, while also enjoying dedicated hospitality.

The space
We designed, built and furnished our house all on our own, without the help of an architect. The result is a space that is unique and full of life. We are very proud of it. We named our house Casa Misterio because when you open the front doors, what was invisible from the street unfolds as you walk through the house, surprising you at every turn. The quiet and secluded guestrooms are accessed through the shared front entrance. You will pass through the living areas and kitchen, as well as Erin's art studio space and the kids play area. We very much enjoy interacting with our guests and sharing our space and time with the many wonderful people who pass through. We truly live by the old adage "Mi casa es su casa." We encourage guests to enjoy the common area and we hope you feel like an old friend come to stay. The kids might ask you to help with a puzzle or kick a ball, the cats might nuzzle you or borrow your lap. This is not your run of the mill guesthouse!

We have another beautiful room in our home available to rent. If the balcony room is occupied, check out our listing for the private casita by following this link: https://airbnb.com/h/casamisteriocasita

Guest access
The balcony room is on the second floor of the main house. It has a full size bed, wifi, air conditioning, and a hammock and seating on a large, screened balcony. The shower is located on the balcony with views of palm leaves from the garden. Guests enter through the main entrance and walk through shared spaces to reach their room.

Guests may also enjoy anytime: kitchen access at any hour, pool, garden, sitting and dining rooms and terrace.

We want our guests to feel completely at home during their stay, as if visiting friends. Come and go as you please and make yourself comfortable in your room and in the common areas.

During your stay
We are a Merida native and a California girl, both trained chefs, who live full time at Casa Misterio with our two cute, bilingual kids and two sweet cats. We love hosting guests and showing off this city that we love so much. Erin's healthy and filling breakfast is an optional add-on at a small cost for the mornings, and she offers lunch and dinner for a fee as well (prices are at the end of the listing description). We both really enjoy getting to know guests over a meal, hearing about their travels, and helping them plan their time in Merida. Manny is a wealth of insider info and tips on where to go and what to avoid. Erin brings her perspective as a very happy foreigner discovering what this amazing place has to offer. Our kids love to play and chat with guests when they come through the shared spaces. Sharing our home and what we like best about our city is what being a part of Airbnb means to us.

Neighborhood highlights

We love our neighborhood! We live in the San Sebastián barrio within Merida's Centro Historico. It is a 20 minute flat walk to the Plaza Grande or 15 minutes to the charming Parque de Santiago, where one can see all the sights Merida is famous for. What we like most about our neighborhood, though, is that while it is very close to the tourism center, one sees almost no tourists in San Sebastián. Strolling through the park, having a beer and botanas at the local "bar familiar," grabbing a freshly grilled "pollo asado" for lunch, or catching a colectivo bus to the central market, our guests truly get a sense of the Merida the locals see. Our neighborhood park, San Sebastian, is buzzing in the evenings, with free Zumba at 6pm, softball and futbol games (and people) to watch, plus a variety of local eateries.

We are also lucky to be 2 blocks from the ADO bus station, a 15 minute drive to the airport and on multiple local bus routes. Taxis also pass often due to the proximity of the bus station. A large supermarket is an easy walk and you can even try a bicycle taxi instead of carrying your groceries home. Check out what our guests have said about our neighborhood:

"It was great to walk around and get a sense of a Merida neighborhood." --San

"The location is fantastic. We walked everywhere, but if the heat is too much for you, there are plenty of colectivos and very cheap cabs that you can grab from the front door." --Nik

"The location is perfect for those who like to explore. Not too far from the center that you feel uncomfortable walking, but also close enough to be a $1-2 Uber ride sometimes less with taxis." --Erica

"It is a quick taxi ride or walk to the city center and there's great eating right in the neighborhood." --Bridget
