The apartment is located in a building on the front line of Copacabana beach - on Avenida Atlantica between Francisco Sá & Souza Lima.

The apartment has been newly-refurbished by an interior designer in a modern, contemporary style. It's on the top floor (12th) of the building which has 3 elevators.

The apartment has a high speed wi-fi internet connection and cable TV channels. Living room and bedroom have newly installed air-conditioners which can also be used as heaters in the winter.

The bedroom has a full-size bed with lots of wardrobe space and there is a safe to secure your valuables. The living room has a sofa bed, a 32-inch LCD TV with cable channels and there is a CD/DVD player. The kitchen is modern with a granite worktop, microwave, fridge with freezer section, stove and a washing machine. Cooking and eating utensils are provided.

The apartment is in a secure building with 24 hour porter and security cameras (which you can watch on the tv!) located next to the police station and it is situated just in front of the world-famous Copacabana beach in posto 6, which is a safe area and considered the most prestigious part of Copacabana, next to Arpoador and just a 5-10 minute walk to Ipanema. Everything you need is on the doorstep: the beach, shops, bars, restaurants, banks, gyms, etc. The metro is just 5 mins walk. The building in located between streets Francisco Sá and Souza Lima.

Bed-linen and bath towels are provided.

The cleaning fee is an additional R$100 and has to be paid in cash at check-in.

The security deposit is R$550 and must be paid by Paypal before arrival and will be refunded via Paypal on departure.

Please note that despite the building being right opposite the beach, the apartment does not have a sea view.

Minimum stay of 3 nights. I will accept 2 night stays if the stay falls between two bookings.

New Year and Carnaval are only available as 10-day packages.

The Neighborhood

There are several supermarkets, restaurants and banks nearby. I usually use the Zona Sul supermarket on rua Francisco Sá: to the left as you exit the building on (website hidden) Copacabana, and right at the traffic lights. There is a nice place for breakfast on rua Souza Lima (next to the Wizard language school): turn right as you exit onto Nossa Senhora and right at the traffic lights.

Across the street from the exit on Nossa Senhora (next to the Copacabana Rio hotel) is a 'kilo' restaurant called Temperate. You help yourself to the food in the buffet and then they weigh it and charge you according to the weight. Restaurant Eclipse on Julio de Castilhos is quite good but the portions are very, very big and I would recommend ordering 1 plate and sharing it (you can always order more if you are still hungry and you can take food away if you have some left over - though they charge a small amount for the box to carry it in).

One of my favourite restaurants, more for the atmosphere than the food, is Bar Astor (on the corner of Vieira Souto and Rainha Elizabeth da Belgica) in Ipanema, about 10 mins walk. (By the way, Vieira Souto is the most expensive street for property in all of South America). A famous restaurant in Rio is La Garota de Ipanema on the corner of Prudente de Morais and Farme de Amoedo. It attracts a lot of tourists because this is where the famous song of the same name was written but the food is very good and again 1 plate is easily enough for 2 people. I always order the picanha steak which comes in lots of slices on a hot plate and you cook it yourself on the table in the hot plate - delicious! There are lots of restaurants and some bars on Farme de Amoedo. It'(email hidden)ly area to eat or drink in the evenings. There are also some nice restaurants towards the lake side of Ipanema. Just walk around and explore and choose one you like the look of.

The place for nightlife (particularly at weekends) is Lapa, next to Centro. It will be full of people out partying (though do not venture into Centro which is not very safe at night).
Santa Teresa is worth a visit for an afternoon. It is a neighbourhood up on a hill overlooking Lapa. It has a different feel and the architecture is interesting. There is a good bar there that gets busy and everyone stands out on the pavement. I don't remember wht it's called but you can't really miss it.

When it rains I usually head off to Barra Shopping (they pronounce barra as baha, the r sounds like a h). It is a huge shopping mall and a good place to escape the rain. It is in Barra de Tijuca where they are going to hold the Olympics and where they are currently held Rock In Rio but it is a good 30-45 mins by taxi depending on the traffic.

I haven't mentioned the obvious tourist things to do in Rio like the Sugar Loaf mountain (Páo de Azuca) or Christ the Redeemer (Corcovado) and of course the beach (I prefer the beaches in Ipanema to the ones in Copacabana).
I hope I have given you a few options that will be of interest to you.

Getting around

There are numerous buses right outside the apartment building that will whisk you anywhere in the city.

There is an entrance to the metro station General Osario at the end of Sa Ferreira just 5 minutes walk away. For some reason they seem to have forgotten to add this entrance to the maps, but it is there, believe me! Actually it is shown on the metro rio website if you click on stations, line 1 and then General Osario.

Other Things to Note

There is a minimum stay of 3 nights. Stays of 2 nights will be accepted if there is a two night gap between bookings.

  • Just returned today from 10 days in Rio - our first stop was Philip's apartment in Copacabana and was the perfect start to our trip. Philip checked in with me a few times before our arrival to make sure any questions were answered and Monica met us promptly at our check-in time with the keys to the apartment. We spent most of our time on the beach but it was so refreshing to have a "home" to come back to right across the street from the beach with a warm shower, cool air conditioning and internet. It was the perfect place to freshen up for a night on the town in Copacabana, Ipanema or a R$30 taxi ride to Lapa for samba! Thanks for welcoming us into your home, Philip, it made our first trip to Rio extremely memorable.

  • We had a great stay at Philip's apartment in Rio de Janeiro. The apartment was as described and perfect for our needs - a minute away from Copacabana beach and an ideal location for buses and less than a 10 minute walk to the metro.

Any minor issues were sorted out quickly and efficiently and we were lucky to have such a great and responsive host.

Our stay lasted a week and the apartment was more than suitable for this length of period.

Thanks for all your help, Philip!

  • My husband and I stayed in this apartment for 1 month over carnival. Its in a great location, walking distance to ipanema and copacabana beaches and the street shopping in Ipanema. It very close to a supermarket, several actually and the bus stop is just out the front. on sunday there is a fresh food market 2 blocks away which was great since we did alot of cooking in the apartment. The kitchen has everything you need. The internet is fast and we had no problems with it. The shower has hot water and of great pressure. We have travelled now for 12 months and enjoyed the homely feel this apartment has with a few decorative touches. Philip was also very easy to comunicate with and responded to emails very promptly. We recomend this apartment. Thanks Philip. Brett and Larisa

  • We had such a great time in Rio and our stay in in Philip’s apartment was very pleasant. To sum our experience up, I will go with pros and cons:

    Pros:
The apartment was clean and well appointed, including a washing machine and laundry rack to hang dry clothes after washing, small ironing board and iron, power adapters for many common plugs, and a fully appointed kitchen with very nice glasses and plates… no plasticware.
The air conditioners are powerful enough to keep the place frigid, and the cable selection was good.
The decor is charming, including small antiqued photos of Rio and lifelike fake flowers.
The couch is on the smaller side, but functional for the space and pretty comfortable.
The bed is extremely comfortable and the bedding was nice.
The location is great, being directly across from the beach, with one larger restaurant and two smaller cafe-style restaurants located at either street's entrance. We felt very safe in the neighborhood the whole time. The apartment is also close to the nice bar and restaurant scene of Ipanema.
Philip was extremely helpful the whole time.

    Cons:
The bedroom window is quite old and lets in a lot of sound. Being located on a busy street with 24-hour traffic, I would recommend ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.
The contact person in Rio, Lucia, showed up a little late, but it was totally ok.
There was no laundry detergent to go with the washing machine (which wasn’t a problem for us since we brought a small package of our own), and only one roll of toilet paper was supplied… leaving us shopping for what should probably be kept stocked.

We looked at numerous locations in our search for an apartment, and after staying here we agree we made a good choice! Thanks Philip!

  • Great location and beautifully clean. Lucia was wonderful and waited for us as our flight was very late. Very accommodating and helpful.

    Response from Philip:

Thanks Tammy. We always try to help whenever we can. I am very pleased your family enjoyed their stay at my apartment and we will keep your parcel safe until you can come and collect it at the end of February.

    Happy New Year!

  • First of all, I would like to thank Philip for letting us stay in his lovely apartment.
Philip was an excellent host, very responsive, offering many tips on places to visit, beaches and restaurants etc... This apartment is modern, secure, and you absolutely cannot beat the location. Really love the neighbourhood. The apartment was clean, very accommodating and got enough storage for your clothes. The bed was very comfortable. The air conditioning in the rooms was perfect.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Philip's place. We had an amazing stay! Will definitely want to return.

  • This was my first apartment rent through AirBnB and it couldn't have been better. Philip is a wonderful host, he answered all my emails promptly and patiently and provided me with a lot of helpful information about the city. On the day of my departure he even allowed me to check out at 3pm as there were no other guests coming. The apartment is a real treasure and a viable alternative to Rio's notoriously expensive hotels. It is conveniently located in a safe area between the two major streets of Copacabana and has everything one needs (including the beaches) within walking distance. The apartment is quiet, clean and tastefully furnished. A cleaning lady takes care of it in Philip's absence and even though she only spoke Portuguese I had no problems checking in or out. If I come to Rio de Janeiro again, Philip's apartment will definitively be my first and preferred choice for accommodation.

  • Staying on Philip's apartment was such a great experience!
He has an excellent apartment located just 3 blocs from Arpoador, with everything that we need in there. The check-in was very easy, with a really helpful host and 2 keys available :).

The fantastic location (just step out from the building and you are on the beach); the security; The "cozy" feel on the whole apartment and such a beautiful beach make this a great trip and a great staying in Rio.

I definitely recommend Philip's apartment to anyone.
