The Groovy Turtle Shell-ter is located in the quirky and uniquely “Asheville” Baying Hound Campground. Part truck cab, part perma-tent, this sleeping pod will keep you dry and one-with-nature at the same time - no tent necessary! The floor is padded for your comfort, but be sure to bring sleeping bags and pillows. The Baying Hound Campground is about 10 minutes from downtown, yet still on the edges of rural, agricultural Asheville.

The space
The Baying Hound Campground is where rural Appalachia meets “keep Asheville weird.” You’ll see sleeping pods decorated by professional artists, structures made from upcycled building materials and permaculture experiments in the making. Neighboring farms have horses, donkeys, chickens, dogs, pigs, goats and more! As a result, farmyard noises (sometimes smells) are present and the occasional farmyard animal may wander into the campground.

Our campground offers other primitive tent-camping spots with access to an outhouse, communal fire pit and cold-water sink. Please keep all fires in the fire pit.

Only 8-12 minutes by car from downtown Asheville, we are a friendly, family-run, budget option when staying in the area. The camping area is located in a small, private, green valley, and you will definitely feel like you are "out in the sticks" even though you're actually super close to all the breweries and parks that make Asheville what it is. Not quite glamping and definitely not KOA, we're happy to offer you an alternative to cookie-cutter lodging without breaking the bank.

Please note that we do not provide the following things: linens, towels, pillows, indoor toilets, showers.

Things we DO provide: a funky unique atmosphere, proximity to downtown, lodging in Asheville that won't break the bank, complimentary farm noises. :)

**Between NOVEMBER and MARCH, we can NOT GUARANTEE ACCESS TO WATER due to winter weather. While we still allow winter reservations, please be aware that conditions are on the more primitive side of "primitive camping." There is no electricity for heaters, so be sure to come prepared for cold-weather camping conditions.**

The campground is located in the "Emma" area of Asheville. Also known as "Wild Wild West Asheville" (to distinguish it from regular West Asheville), this is the last bastion of non-gentrified Asheville. Emma is completely un-zoned, so you get an interesting mixture of mostly residential properties that scatter the area. Just like most areas in Appalachia, our neighbors are fiercely independent, yet simultaneously open-minded. You can pretty much do whatever you want out here as long as it doesn't bother anybody else.
