About this listing
This lovely, well-maintained home is in the heart of Barre City's oldest and most beautiful neighborhood. The room has gorgeous sunny windows and an antique four poster bed. Walking distance to downtown Barre, easy access to I-89.
Built in 1898, this home has retained all of its classic old-world charm. Furnished with an eclectic mix of classic New England antiques and modern conveniences, this home bridges the gap between old fashioned charm and modern comfort. The full sized bed comfortably fits two people. Air conditioner window unit in summer, woodstove for heat in the winter. In the really cold season, the upstairs bedrooms will be chilly, but the livingroom will be nice and toasty. Easy access to I-89, and a great stopping point whether you're traveling to points north or south. Great local mountain biking trails, hiking, kayaking and skiing all within an easy drive.
Guests have exclusive access to their bedroom (s) and shared access to both bathrooms, kitchen, laundry room, living area and front porch. I have two separate bedrooms listed, so the bedroom next to yours may be occupied by another guest as well. I have two private rooms for my own use which are not included in the house share, as well as a fenced backyard which is pretty much dog territory.
Interaction with Guests
I'm a friendly and accommodating host, but I also enjoy my privacy. I'll be here to greet you, and show you the ropes, and I will be easy to reach in case of questions. I have a small private suite of rooms (although we do share the kitchen and bathrooms) and the dogs and I will primarily keep to those areas, or the fenced back yard, in the evenings during the warmer months. I also have a room with a single bed which is adjacent to this room, and it is also available for rental and shares the common bathroom(s).
Please respect my privacy by maintaining your privacy. Please keep doors shut when you're engaging in activities such as changing clothes, showering, or sleeping.
I am particularly reserved with single male guests, for obvious reasons. Please don't take it personally!
The house is in a beautiful neighborhood full of classic older Vermont homes and friendly neighbors. There can be some noise in the summer months, mostly from kids playing or neighborhood BBQs. Downtown Barre is within walking distance, with its numerous restaurants and bars. The house is within 15 minutes of Montpelier, and 50 minutes of Burlington, Stowe and Waitsfield. There are wonderful mountain biking, hiking, kayaking and skiing opportunities close by.
Easy access to the bus line, and just 10 minutes from Interstate 89.
Other Things to Note
Please note that the bathrooms are shared.
There are two small, hypoallergenic dogs in the house. They are very sweet and clean, but they are curious and will want to greet and get to know you. Dog lovers welcome!
Please remember, this is not a hotel--it is my private home. There may be other guests in the house, and everyone shares the common space, including bathrooms. There is only one full bathroom in the house (as well as one half bath) so please do not expect a private bathroom. Communication around scheduling is really important to me as I juggle through the details of a busy life. PLEASE DO NOT ARRIVE EARLY without letting me know. I may not be home, I may be in the shower, I may be on a conference call, or I may be engaged in any number of activities that would be awkward for you to interrupt. If you think you're going to be more than half an hour early, please contact me and I will re-arrange my schedule if possible. If you are going to be more than an hour later than your agreed-upon arrival time, likewise let me know in advance so that I can adjust my schedule accordingly.
Otherwise, this is a clean, safe, beautiful and quiet place to stay, and I will do my utmost to make your stay a comfortable one. Check in/check out needs to work around my work schedule during the week. If you're staying on a weekday, please plan to check in between 5:30 and 9:00 pm, and check out by 8:00 am. On weekends, check in can be flexible after 3 pm, check out is 11 am.
Please do not bring anyone to the house who is not a registered guest.
During the colder months, please be aware that the house is primarily heated by wood (furnace backup) which means that the bedroom can be quite chilly. This is normal for older Vermont homes, and please bring along sweaters, warm socks and pajamas, as the indoor temp can get down to 55 degrees over night. During the day, the temp is warmer, especially in the living room, and you are welcome to spend time there (although you may be sharing the warm space with me and a couple of friendly dogs.) Due to risk of fire, I ask that guests DO NOT open the woodstove for any reason--I will tend to it.
The driveway can accommodate two cars side by side. If you are visiting during the summer, and yours is the third car home in the evening, please plan to park on the street. If it is during the winter and there is a parking ban, we can accommodate a third car in the driveway, but it will be blocking the other two cars from leaving. Please coordinate with me regarding times people need to leave in the morning before blocking in other cars.
The bathrooms are shared, so please clean up after you use them. Please remove your hair from the tub drain after showering, lower the toilet seat if you lifted it and clean up any splashes around the toilet, and clean up after yourself around the sink. Because there can be up to four people sharing the same bathroom, it is vitally important that everyone cleans up after themselves and leaves the bathroom clean for the next person.
If you're planning to do some cooking, please let me know so I can work around your schedule. Also, I have an extreme gluten sensitivity, so please don't plan to do any major cooking with wheat, as it contaminates my cookware. Snacks and cereals containing wheat are no problem, but please avoid cooking pasta or doing any baking.
Please note that the posts on the antique bed in your room are delicate, please don't hang anything on them. Basic courtesy and cleanliness in the common areas is appreciated. No smoking indoors, but smoking on the porch is OK. There is no land line in the house, so please bring a cell phone with you.
