Barbados, the easternmost island of the Caribbean Lesser Antilles, is a coral island formed in prehistoric times by erupting volcanoes. All of that activity has left modern-day visitors a 21-mile-long playground. And Becky's by the Sea, Guest House is perfectly placed for play, just 50 yards from the beach in quaint Fitts Village, St. James. Close to public transportation, restaurants, super markets, duty free shopping and water sports. This was the best airbnb experience I've ever had, and it was all because of Davette, owner of Becky's by the Sea.
The gorgeous home is right across the street from the beach, so you don't have to go far at all for your own, practically private, waterfront. Very powerful air conditioning. Working Internet. The house is on the Caribbean side, which is more calm, clear, and beautiful than the Atlantic side. There is a supermarket a 5 minute walk away, and not too much else nearby, but the house is facing the main road where the local buses (cheap and very easy) and taxis (less cheap but equally easy) pass by all day to take you to wherever you like, and it's easy to get to all destinations you'd want to go to. You are not far from stuff you need, but you don't feel like you're stuck in some kind of tourist hell. You feel like a local.
Davette has lots of wonderful recommendations and you should follow them all. She knows a lot of people in town, and helped us get everything we needed and wanted.
Davette is the best host you could ask for. She hangs out with you if you seem interested, and leaves you be if you don't. Do what you can to make her a part of your Barbados experience; as lovely as this island is, she's the best part of it all. She made us coffee every morning so we wouldn't have to go out and get it ourself. She's a wonderful cook and baker who loves to use local and organic ingredients, and every day she surprised us with some kind of special goodie that she made: coconut chocolate bark, vegan pumpkin muffins she made from pumpkin butter she made herself, and of course, rum punch. She loves to spend time in her garden, cultivating her lovely plants and fruit trees (lime, pomegranate, mango). She is a remarkable one-woman operation and goes out of her way to make sure you love Barbados as much as she does.
We're already plotting our return here!
Well, where to start? Staying at Becky's by the Sea turned out for us to such a beautiful and relaxing experience, we liked just everything. We slept well and did not need air condition at all. The house is very comfortable, we found and gratefully used everything we could possibly need, thank you, dear Davette! We appreciated fresh coffee waiting in the kitchen with some delicious cake and the kittens wanting to be pet every morning!
The location of the house in the middle of the west coast is just perfect, and the bus stop in front of the house is such an bonus, you can hop in and be in any beach to the north in just minutes. Or in 15 minutes in the middle of the Bridgetown. And yes, we can confirm, the beach in front of the house looks like private, we used to walk there in the morning or before the sunset (Il Tempio has happy hour from 4 to 6 pm :-) and hardly met anybody in hundreds of meters (march).
Should you run out of ideas, just ask Davette and you get valuable local recommendations about dinning, trips, events... anything!
Noise: first day we thought the proximity to the road (which can get busy during the day) could be a trouble, but you just sink in and get used to it, and laugh when the yellow busses (with real rear spoilers, haha) honk for an attention. You will miss that noise first morning after you return home and show up on the office, guaranteed.
The supermarket just 5 minutes walk to the city has everything you could need for breakfast or dinner, but we liked to just jump onto the yellow bus and go eat to the Holetown, plenty of restaurant with reasonable prices, we loved Zaccions in the middle of the day and Ju Ju's beach bar in the evening. Cocktails were strong and tasty everywhere!
We can't wait to return! Highly recommended!
What a wonderful experience! Davette was a wonderful hostess! The property was amazing! Easy access to the beach and easy access to the bus line (we had fun riding the yellow and blue bus everywhere)! Davette sent us to some great locally known locations with great food and tucked away beaches! Was able to swim with the turtles at JuJu's beach bar! We look forward to staying at "Beck's by the Sea" again!
Becky's by the sea was just what we were looking for on our holiday. 4 of us stayed in total, 2 in each of the guest rooms. All of us in our mid 20s and looking for a mix of beaches, local sites, water sports as well as good places to eat and nightlife. The house has a lovely sun roof to relax and nice balcony area to sit outside. Becky's by the sea is in an amazing location - just a stones throw from the beach with clear waters and clean beaches. The bus stops are literally on your door step to go south to Bridgetown or north to Speightstown both within 20 mins each way. Just 5 mins walk is the local supermarket and also a short walk to Wendy's- good place for food where the locals eat. The hostess Davette was extremely welcoming, friendly and thoughtful. She gave lots of good recommendations for restaurants, places to see, how to use the local transport and introduced us to some neighbours who were scuba masters, water sports experts and chauffeurs/taxis. Would definitely recommend to stay at Becky's by the sea.
We stayed in the Guest room 2 for the first 5 nights and Guest room 1 for the remaining 3 nights and the switchover was very smooth.
Guest room 2 allowed us to have two double beds to use if needed and the bathroom and toilet was right next door. No problems with bathroom time as Guest room 1 has it's own ensuite bathroom. Both rooms are spacious, clean and have lots of storage space to hang up clothes. Both rooms have fans and air conditioners which came in useful after we learned how to turn them off :D
Davette is a great host and very knowledgeable about the island. Although we were sad to hear that the complimentary breakfast on the first morning was only available in certain months of the year, on a couple of days we were treated to some home made fish cakes which were amazing! The local supermarket is only a 5 minute walk and we were provided with a cupboard, fridge space and everything in the kitchen was very easy to use.
The location is perfect as you just have to cross a small road and you are walking on the beach and into the sea and it is a residential area so it was like having your own private beach. All beaches are public so it was easy for us to walk along the beach and find our other friends who were staying in hotels close by. Very easy access down the coast to Bridgetown or up to Speightstown by bus.
Davette is clearly an animal lover as there are a couple of cute cats, sparrows, doves and even monkeys that frequent her house. The monkeys were definitely a bonus!
A great trip and Davette's house is beautiful so we would highly recommend it.
We stayed with Davette for a week in February 2014 and had a lovely time. The house is great, big rooms, very good beds, great kitchen, beautiful porch and sea view terrace, all immaculately kept. Davette is a wonderful host, warm and welcoming and very helpful with anything you need. The location in Fitt's Village is ideal, an easy ride to Bridgetown, Holetown, Oistins, or anywhere else you could need to go on the island. Wendy's restaurant and bar is just around the corner and is great for an easy, inexpensive meal. Jordan's supermarket is like two blocks, and the sea is right across the street. The only thing I could possibly say is that there is some traffic noise (as there is everywhere in Barbados when you're close to the sea and the coast road) but it really didn't bother us. Davette's gardens are beautiful, they make the house feel like a little private oasis. All said, we loved Barbados, and staying at Becky's by the Sea was a wonderful way to experience the island.
My friend and I stayed at Beckys by the Sea for a couple of weeks in January 2014 and had a great time. Our host was very friendly and helpful, guiding us to various places on Barbados - she even took us out to some of them! The location is fantastic, just across from the Caribbean Sea. It's also on the main bus route into Bridgetown and along the west coast to Speightstown and beyond - so we were able to explore very economically.
On a practical note, the kitchen is spacious and well equipped and the rooms are very clean. There is a supermarket a short walk away and a good fishmarket just along the highway on the bus.

I am a former resident of Brooklyn, New York, now living in Barbados for the past five years. I love what I am doing and have been told I do it well. I am available to answer questions, make suggestions, give directions and even accompany my guests around the island. I can guarantee you a true Bajan experience.
Becky's is a single owner occupied private home, located just 50 yards from the beach where there is great snorkeling, very close to public transportation, restaurants and rum shops are right up the road, down the road, all over the island.
I love it when I have someone to cook for, so you may wake up to my potato egg casserole, some fresh baked bread, or you may come in from a island touring and find I made you some bajan fish cakes along with a glass of rum punch.
Would love to host you and show off my beautiful island.
