The Space

Please read the whole description before checking availability. Rates change during special events and certain months. I'm now a licensed innkeeper in Austin Tx., OL V(phone number hidden). My rates include all local hotel taxes.

I’m a working artist and avid live music fan. My house has been featured in the Oct. 2013 Tribeza magazine. Ive hosted weddings, commercials, music videos, commercial photo shoots, house concerts, graduations, wrap parties, fundraisers, “after-the-gig” salons and the infamous “1st Sunday Potluck” every month for 10 years. If walls could talk they’d tell you to come on in pull up a chair and have a good time. This property has been most often described as the real Austin deal.

The Bouldin neighborhood is one of Austin's hippest areas with plenty of fun things to do and places to eat, drink and be merry. All of the pictures of the Bouldin Neighborhood on Airbnb's site, are within 4 blocks of my house. It's a great walking/biking neighborhood and very close to many things I like to say you're within 3 miles of most anything you would probably want to do in Austin.

This is a 2 bedroom 1 bath house on 1/3 of an acre, 1.25 miles from downtown. My decorating style is eclectic and artsy. Or as my grandmother calls it, “Early Garage Sale”! My art studio is on the property as well as a 600 sq. ft apartment. Plenty of privacy between both. It's also on Airbnb. The apt sleeps 5. The whole compound is also available for big parties. And then there’s “The Porch”. I’m proud to say it’s inspired songs and paintings. JReally. Someone showed up one time with a painting of my porch as a hostess present. It’s a wrap-around that’s 14' wide on the North side.

Most important to ACL and SXSW, and F1 attendees is the house is super close to the center of the action. It has a walk score of 83 out of 100. ((website hidden) walk score) It takes 10 minutes to get to the convention center by bike. Coming home is uphill, so it's more like 15. The #5 bus is 20 yds. from my door. I’m 2 blocks from S. Lamar- lots of venues and restaurants. 4 blocks from South 1st-lots of trendy food trailers and restaurants and boutiques. And 8 blocks to the now world famous South Congress Ave. A stones throw from my property is Thai Fresh and Thrice coffee house and venue. 3 blks away is Bouldin Creek Café and Polvo’s Mexican restaurant. Zilker Park- 2 mi., The Long Center-1 mi., Convention Center- 2 mi, Capitol 2.5 mi.

Other Stuff:
- It's a 15 drive to Circuit of the Americas racetrack which hosts the Formula 1 Grand Prix.
- The house is about 10-15 minutes from the airport and is a cheap taxi ride.
- On official City of Austin bike path. Part of an extensive inner city trail.
- #5 Bus is right next to my house
- It's good for events but there is an extra charge
- kitty- corner from Twin Oaks Library
- Corner store is behind my house. HEB is .75 mi and Whole Foods is 1.5 mi.
- Yo hablo Espanol!

I'm an Austin native and a wealth of resources and information. Knowing a local is like gold when you’re traveling so ask anything. I want to show you why Austin is the best place in the world to have fun and see great music.

Laundry room, picnic table.

Interaction with Guests

However much or little you want to interact with me is fine.

The Neighborhood

Gentrification and property taxes have moved a lot of what others considered "weird" but I've always considered pretty normal. There are still enough movie stars, rock stars, and vatos to keep things interesting. The new "weird" or "normal. However you want to look at it.

Bus in front of my house. Walk to some of the best restaurants in Austin.

  • We had a fantastic time at this place. In fact, we had a few local friends over for dinner on the porch and they said that they wanted to rent this place - despite the fact that they lived only :15 minutes away, ha ha! We had a few rainstorms while we were there and it was lovely to sit out there with the rain drumming away on the tin roof. The place is really spacious and comfortable. There were at least a few good restaurants within easy walking distance. We had a fabulous time!

  • This is a great place, and absolutely as advertised! The host, the location, the back porch, the home...all excellent. It was the perfect place to hang out for a long weekend. We only wish we could've had a little more time there.

  • It was a great stay at Gretchen's, we really enjoyed it! Perfect location for SXSW also, we did everything by bike (quite some hills but ok). Easy communication and everything was well arranged. Only thing was that we stayed with 5 people in her house and that there's only 1 bathroom (and only 2 real bed rooms)… that meant waiting in line for the shower :-). But we loved it and would definitely recommend it!

  • We absolutely LOVED staying at Gretchen's place. The colorful decor throughout the house made the place feel lively and happy, and the place was clean and very homey and comfortable.
The wrap around porch was amazing, and there were days where we contemplated canceling our plans so we could spend more time on the porch.
The property is lovely and a real sanctuary within the city. Gretchen was a fabulous host, and we couldn't recommend her more.
Finally, Repo and Betty (the two doggies) were so adorable and affectionate. They really added to the overall feel of coming home after a day of exploring. HIGHLY recommend staying here!

  • terrific experience!

  • Gretchen's home is a beautifully curated, warm, and welcoming space. You could spend a full day just discovering all the cool, quirky things laying around. The living room has cozy chairs, the beds are comfy, the towels are soft and clean. Her porch is a thing of wonder, and I would have been happy to sit there the whole time I was there. The house is also really close to a ton of amazing restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, food trucks, and other Austin attractions. She really is located in the best place!

Gretchen herself is awesome! She is friendly and fun and can tell you all kinds of great stories if you feel like hearing them. She's laid back and has great food and activity suggestions. She also has two, sweet, funny dogs who will charm the food right out of your fingers. Delightful companions--though Gretchen is careful to keep watch over them and keep them out of your hair, if you don't want them around. The house definitely does not feel like she has pets--nary a stray bit of fur or dirt in the place.

I would recommend her and her home to anyone in a heartbeat and I would most definitely stay there again.

  • A positively wonderful and inviting home full of Austin charm. If you're looking for the authentic real deal, this is the spot. Close to the vibrant SoCo area - and very accessible to everything you need - but local enough to be away from the chaos. I stayed here for a week and thoroughly enjoyed every day.

  • Our family had a fabulous time at Gretchen's home for 5 days. It is a beautiful, colorful, comfortable and clean home. The walls are covered with wonderful art work . Gretchen was very easy to work with and responsive and communicative. Great central location and lots of good restaurants to walk to. It is also dog-friendly! Thanks so much Gretchen for sharing your lovely home.

  • Gretchen's house is the perfect landing spot for a great experience in Austin. I highly recommend it. The location near SoCo is ideal and the property is eclectic and fun. Best porch in the city!

    November 2013
  • This place was wonderful for my wife and I and our dog bogart. Gretchen provided us with a fun, clean, comfortable home away from our home in San Antonio. We will definitely return to this place when we decide to return to Austin. Couple of comments on the home. Ideal austin home. Very cute, very comfortable, very clean. Lots of fun artwork and literature to dive into. Its about a 12-15 minute walk to south congress, and the walk is always nice. We hope to return sooner than later.
    A & C
PS Gretchen's dogs, Betty & Repo, are the best.
