On arrival at Le Spighe Cottages, we were enthusiastically welcomed by our most generous host Francesco.
After showing us the ins and outs of what was our home for the next two weeks,
we were provided with a home baked cake and a bottle of wine which was produced by his father Ilio who although speaks no English, made us feel very welcome with a huge smile and and a warm hand shake.
Maps of the immediate area are available in each cottage and directions given by Francesco to places of interest.
No questions were evaded and if he didn't have an answer on the spot, he would certainly make every effort to provide answers.
There are many places of interest in the surrounding areas and one which stands out is the collection of hot springs which are free of charge and within 15 minutes drive.
The township above these pools is just one of many small ancient villages within easy access from home base.
Every village is steeped in history and the locals can provide not only this history but cullinary delights to satisfy the most discerning.
As first timers to this region we were totally satisfied and will treasure every moment.
The large township of Orvieto which is only 30 minutes away is a major attraction not to be missed but be prepared to spend at least one full day discovering it's delights.
After some quick and easy communication with Franceso, we arrived at le Spighe with his very straightforward directions. Francesco's mother was there to greet us and show us our cottage, one of the rustic and cozy stone buildings set amidst the crops, the cherry trees and herbs in the middle of a calm and relaxing oasis filled with the sounds of the farm. We made ourselves at home and charted with our neighbors, and when Francesco arrived, we were enthusiastically welcomed and made to feel like family. He and his parents are wonderful hosts - his father picked some cherries from the tall trees for us and taught us the world for sunflower (girasole) though he speaks no English, he is easy to understand. The tart his mother made was delicious and served us well for three mornings, but the wine Franceso gave us from his cellar didn't last nearly as long (like a white cider!). Franceso was extra accommodating when we changed our plans at the last minute to go stay with some friends up in Sienna, and was generally enjoyable to hang out and chat with about this and that and the surrounding area. Our favorite things were playing soccer in the field by the cottage and foraging for berries during the sunset, listening to the birds and the cows...and outside of le Spighe visiting the hot baths, and checking out Orvietto and Lake Bolsena. Thanks again to Franceso for a beautiful time!
we spent a whole month at Francesco's le spighe and we enjoyed every single day of our stay. Even our 10 month old daughter wouldn't want to leave anymore..
the charming cottage, the beautiful garden, the historic towns nearby, it's the perfect place to explore the surrounding area or just to relax and enjoy your life!
Francesco and his parents are simply wonderful. We thank you so much for the great time!
We had a wonderful week at one of the stone cottages (they are all lovely!). Francesco and his folks are great hosts and really make you feel like their own guests, not "guests" or customers! We were treated to a fabulous fruit tort by Francesco's mom and a bottle of wine from the family cellar on arrival. The restaurant suggestions were great - standouts at each end of the scale were:
the truck stop pizzeria 200 meters down the road (pappardelle with wild boar ragu for about $10 was out of this world good!).
Our first experience of a Michelin-starred restaurant, La Parolina, exceeded our expectations in every way!
This lovely quiet corner of central Italy is within easy reach of all the Tuscan and Umbrian famous places but is worth a bit of focus on its own. We alternated days -- one quiet day spent locally then a driving day to see a distant famous town. The local days held up well against all that fame and glory and we want more time there. Go!
There is a big problem with Le Spighe - You don't want to leave it!
Our cottage was all we could have wished for - cozy, sweet, very clean, fully equipped, full of love and attention - a true delight.
Moreover, it was the pure tranquility of Le Spighe that made it so captivating. Sitting outside, soaking in the lush green fields, the picture-perfect scenery of the surrounding hills, the bird-chirping, the vivid blossoms... I didn't want to tour the area - all I wanted was to sit outside and draw and feel.
Francesco and his family are beautiful people - sincere, nice, thoughtful, interesting, and it is their attention and effort which makes the place such a gem.
I could go on and on with the superlatives and it will still not do the place justice.
Very highly recommended!
After staying in Rome, Venice and Florence, my sister and I (aged in our 60’s) wanted to spend some time in the countryside. We spent 3 days at one of the lovely old stone houses (I think it was No. 1 San Giustino) on the farm Le Spighe, looking over brilliant green fields, past the vineyard to the hills crowned with small villages and castles. Le Spighe is I think technically in the Lazio region however it is also very close to Tuscany and Umbria. In short drives around the area, we sometimes visited all 3 regions in one day. If you were staying longer, Le Spighe would be a great base for exploring. Orvieto is only about 30 km. away. As it was March and low season, we had the unusual privilege of being the only guests. We stayed in the house furthest away from the main road, and it was very peaceful. The garden is beautifully kept, and home to a number of friendly cats (fed by Francesco and his parents). The cottage was very comfortable with two good-size bedrooms looking over the fields, living area with couch and dining table, a well-equipped kitchen and bathroom with small shower. Francesco and his parents were so thoughtful – fresh milk in the refrigerator, condiments, oil and coffee, and other essentials. We bought good local bread and cheese at the trattoria/pizzeria at Proceno (about 15 minutes drive), otherwise you need to go to Acquapendente for supplies where there is a supermarket. Acquapendente is an attractive old town with a basilica, and is a key place on the Francigena Way which winds through this area. Le Spighe is also a short drive from Monte Rufeno Natural Reserve. As it was low season, much of the reserve was closed and deserted. We had an enjoyable walk through the forest and even saw some deer. We visited the charming village of Proceno and also drove to the large and spectacular Lago di Bolsena. Francesco is a wonderful host; although we were late, he and his father Ilio were there to greet us. His mother Ivana arrived later bearing a tart, and we were given a bottle of their own wine. He, his wife and his parents live in Acquapendente and come to Le Spighe to run the farm which they have owned for many years. Francesco is a most engaging person, with a great curiosity about the world. He was most willing to assist with our rudimentary Italian, and has a very good command of English. Francesco gave us a map of Aquapendente and surrounds with useful information. Unfortunately 2 of his recommended restaurants (including La Parolina) were closed on the Monday when we visited, however we had two excellent meals at the Trattoria al Pugnalone in Acquapendente. We also had a pizza from the pizzeria about 5 minutes up the road from Le Spighe. We would thoroughly recommend a stay here, and it would be even more beautiful in summer. Francesco even...
We spent 10 wonderful days at Le Spighe. Francesco was there to greet us, with beautiful home- made gifts and heaps of information on the area. We stayed in the stand- alone cottage and it had everything we needed..... especially heating as it became very cold. We spent days driving through the stunning countryside of Tuscany and Umbria, visting all the villages. Le Spighe is so central. The local town has supermarkets, so you are able to prepare meals in the cottages. There is also an internet cafe. Francesco and his family are so warm and generous and nothing was too much trouble. We highly recommend Le Spighe......perfect!
Francesco is the ultimate host; going out of his way to accomodate our needs. My husband loves Italian cooking so I asked if there was a cooking class nearby. He made reservations for us at La Parolina Ristorante with chef di Iside Romano. The whole experience was fantastic! Highly recommend it!
The cottage is located in a beautiful, yet secluded Tuscan valley with panoramic views in all directions. The cottage is fully equipped with everything you may need. Francesco's mother baked us a delicious pie and we were given a great bottle of homemade Chardonnay. We felt like family and will definitely be back.
Must say "absolutely fabulous", we used Le Spighe as home base upon leaving Rome. From there we made many road trips to both surrounding towns and hamlets as well as Florence. It was wonderful to return to our quiet abode after the intensity of the cities. Francesco and family were wonderful hosts and gave many tips about the area which made us appreciate our stay all the more.
We even had a flat tire and Francesco brought me to a repair shop and helped with the necessary arrangements. The facilities are neat and clean and well situated on a well loved farm. Although at the end of gardening season, we were able to find tomatoes, lettuce, eggplants and raspberries. Would love to have seen it a month or so earlier. No complaints from this quarter and yes, we would go again.
We had a fantastic stay at Agriturismo Le Spighe, in fact it was our favourite accommodation that we stayed in while in Italy!
The cottage that we stayed in was on the second floor and was massive, with 2 bedrooms, a lounge, bathroom and kitchen. The outlook from each room was over the surrounding paddocks and gardens and was very beautiful and relaxing. The cottage itself was very well furnished with everything you need. We also had access to a communal laundry, BBQ and were told that we could help ourselves to the fruit and vegetables, (raspberries, apples, lettuces, tomatoes, eggplants, herbs etc).
One of our highlights while we were there was watching the 3 little kittens that lived with their mother in the garden.
The hospitality that our host Francesco and his family showed us was fantastic, from the tart on arrival, to some home made wine, parting gifts and time to chat. He and his family are warm, friendly people who really care about their agriturismo and guests.
Contact with Francesco was always quick and easy and he even met us in the nearby town on arrival after we took a wrong turn.
If you are looking for an authentic and relaxing stay in tuscany you will not be disappointed. In fact it's one of those places that I wish I could keep to myself ;)
