The Space

The bedroom has a king sized, four poster bed, with a deluxe McCroskey mattress. The room is large, 14' x 14" and has drawers and a desk for your use. The bathroom is shared.

There is a well equipped kitchen with gas cooktop for your use when you rent the whole cottage, and a dining table with six chairs. If you wish to have more people or a family, the barn can also be rented which has a half bathroom. A total of 3 real beds are available that can hold 6 adults when the cottage and barn rooms are rented.

During February and March, the daffodls are blooming and you can walk up and down the blue stone steps to a viewing platform and then continue onward through the 1/4 mile walk.

In April and May, the peonies are blooming, and the weather is mild and balmy. The roses begin blooming in May as well and many climbing roses hang in the oak trees. The bloom of many of them continue through the fall.

The site is a Glen Ellen hilltop with views of the San Pablo Bay with stone paths on the 10 acre organic property. Patio and viewing platform have views of the Bay, and daffodils cover the hillsides in February and March, peonies bloom in May and June and roses bloom through December. Olives are harvested in late fall and winter. Wine events and tastings take place thoughout the summer and fall in the Sonoma and Napa Valleys and tastings continue through the winter. My site is private and quiet with beautiful surroundings. Pitch dark nights and great star viewing are possible in the country as there is no ambient light. The electricity is provided by solar panels hidden at one end of the 10 acres.

The downtown of Glen Ellen has several restaurants and an excellent market with good coffee drinks as well, and it is one and one half miles from my home. Just a little further, at Jack London Village, you will find YETI which is a Nepalese/Indian restaurant treasure. Sonoma and Santa Rosa are both about 20 minutes away and Kenwood is 10 minutes with more restaurants and stores. I highly recommend the Kenwood Restaurant on Highway 12 and a Portuguese restaurant in Sonoma named LaSalette, off the Square in an alley on the movie theatre side.

If you are interested in walking, my paths will provide nice up and down opportunities as will my road for half a mile up and down to the road. Mosquito netting that covers the armchairs on the platform, will make evenings delightful and romantic there at dusk and after, perhaps with a bottle of wine.

Nearby is a world famous Botanical garden, Quarryhill, at the intersection of the north end of Arnold Drive and Highway 12. Jack London Road in the center of Glen Ellen leads to Jack London Park and his Beauty Ranch which is now a state park run by private fund raising owing to California's budget problems.

I'm interested in meeting new friends and in sharing my extraordinary site with them. Visitors have described my setting as "A Little Bit of Heave," and I agree!

  • Really enjoyed the rustic luxury of the barn bedroom. The composting toilet took a little getting used to, but the overall experience was great. The bed was uber plush and very comfortable. The satellite TV was great. We didn't get a chance to explore the grounds, but what we saw of the terraces was beautiful. Marde is a great hostess, and the coffee and croissants in the morning were very nice! We were a little put off by the stable doors that didn't lock, but since it is up in the boonies at the top of the hill, we just went with it and enjoyed ourselves. We will definitely consider going back in the future.

  • Marde was a wonderful host and has a lovely home. We enjoyed the nice breeze on top of the mountain relaxing on her back patio and conversations with Marde. My sister and I felt very welcome and hope to return if we come to Glen Ellen in the future.

  • What a lovely place to stay--up on a Sonoma Valley ridge amidst oaks and manzanita, with views, walking paths and quiet. For feeling far away, this spot is also conveniently located near the little town of Glen Ellen and the surrounding wineries.

  • We have been to San Francisco many times and are in the process of moving there full-time. Out of all the places we have stayed as discovered on AirBnB, Marde's condo on Jackson Street is by far our favorite. If you want a spacious, cozy, beautifully kept, full of light and windows, charming older condo in a spectacular neighborhood, then this is where you want to be.

The building could not be in a better location for us. We love the neighborhood and Marde's condo because: (1) it is so convenient to 4 major Muni bus lines right outside the front door and all the coffee shops, book stores, grocery stores (Molly Stone's on California St. has shuttle service!) and restaurants on Fillmore Street and in Pacific Heights; (2) it is spacious with plenty of room to move about and includes a very large kitchen where we were able to cook up a storm and invite friends over to dinner; (3) it is charming in an older building with an art deco style elevator that was perfect to get to the top floor; and (4) 3 large bedrooms with plenty of closet space, 2 bathrooms that were perfectly functional and convenient, wonderful Persian rugs, in-unit washer and dryer, wireless internet, and DirecTV made it perfect to work and relax.

Stepping outside is a treat with fragrant flowers along the building. Tully's Coffee is located in the building as well as a world class magazine store. A beautiful park with beautiful views of the Bay is a block away. We didn't have a car except for one day and I had no problem finding street parking. I don't know what else to say but everything that we could possible want was right here. We would recommend this place in a heartbeat and can't wait to return. It feels like home to us. Marde is a joy to work with. She was so wonderful to stay up late to greet me upon arrival and to be easy to reach throughout the stay.

About
I moved to Glen Ellen, California, from Palo Alto in 2000 where I had lived earlier after graduating from Stanford University. I have three grown children and am the grandmother of two girls. Economics and Photography are the subjects I studied primarily, and now I live on a farm growing and distributing bulbs, tulips, daffodils, peonies etc. I am an avid traveler. I have been all over the world, primarily engaging in landscape photography and I have grown weary of hotels. I am a traveling photographer, and my latest trips were a month in Brazil in 2010 and again in 2011 and a month in Turkey in 2012. It was in Turkey where I discovered the joys of Air BNB and listed my home on the site from Istanbul! Two weeks after I returned from Turkey, I activated my listings. I have been renting my rooms for 2 months now and have not had a weekend without guests since I began. I think you will enjoy the stay, and I look forward to meeting you! I am cosmopolitain and well travelled and I love sharing my home and my extraordinary site with with visitors.
