We had a great stay at doris's. She is really helpful as is everyone in the house. The place is big and clean. The location is just perfect on the top of selaron stairs so it's always safe to come back home as there is always someone in the streets nearby.

Doris and Paolo are very nice and sweet people. They were very attentive and caring for the well being of my stay at their family home. Great hosts! Thank you to both! The house is located on the Santa Teresa hill, which allows for a great freeze. It is very near the Selaron stairs (a must see), so getting up there is a good exercise and you must be in good shape. Had some issues with the wifi, since it did not reach my rooms, but there is wifi in other parts of the house. Also, some taxis and ubers did not want to go up there, but in the end, I always found a taxi or uber that went up. Santa Teresa is an interesting and artsy neighborhood and very near Lapa, Centro and the south side of Rio could be easily reached with the metro line, which is about 15 min walk from the house. These are very busy areas of the city, so being careful is always important.

Hi Gianna, Hope you get home safe! It was very nice having you here at our home. About the wifi we already bought a new device that (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) just start commercializing. I hope it will fix the problem.

Firstly i would like to make it be known that we normally stay in a much higher class of accommodation, but due to the high prices during the world cup our level of accommodation had to be lowered. Well firstly the host John and family were very helpful. We initially had the small room which unfortunately was not very comfortable or as clean as it could have been. The accommodation is advertised that it has animals, which is OK, as long as the animals mess is cleaned up, there was a lot of animal mess around the area where we hung our clothes out to dry. We eventually moved into the bigger room which was a lot more comfortable and a bit cleaner. The breakfast is served at a small bar down the street, of which the menu does not change from day to day. The neighborhood would probably suit backpackers etc, i certainly would not take my wife or family to the area. The area certainly would not suit elderly or disabled people. For the cost of the accommodation i suppose it would suit some people, but unfortunately i was not to impressed.

This is a nice self-contained basement suite that was clean and well equipped. Unfortunately, due to extremely heavy rain on the day of our arrival, the floor was partly flooded, but Paulo (Doris and Joao's father) had arranged for us to stay next door that night. The next day the floor was still quite wet, but Paulo did his very best to dry out the floor and this worked out OK. Fortunately the floor is tiled and there was no lasting damage. Both Paulo and his son Joao were very helpful, Joao booked our bus tickets for us – even he found the web-site tricky. We had ordered a taxi to take us to the bus station, but when it did not arrive, Paolo took us himself ! The house is just on the edge of slightly dodgy area – after 9pm we were advised not to go down the hill (towards Lapa), but up the hill into Santa Teresa was OK. Santa Teresa has some really nice eating places (but some are also expensive) and great views over the city. It is also very near the famous Selaron steps which are great fun. We also visited an excellent Samba club (Carioca da Gema) which is very close by, in Lapa (but took a taxi back).

Me and my boyfriend stayed at Doris and João for 4 days while travelling in Brazil and had a wonderful time in Rio. The room has a separate entrance from the house and it's very big with a nice bathroom. The location is great, right next to the Escalera Selaron between Santa Teresa and Lapa, we walked around and had no safety problems at all even at night (always being careful of not carrying big cameras or valuable things on us). Santa Teresa is a bohemian area where to find lovely restaurants and bars at night, also a few things to see and little shops. We went out in Lapa a couple of nights and it's really fun, at weekends packed with people drinking on the streets and checked out some live music in one of the many samba clubs. Transport is easy, lots of buses to the beach and Gloria is the nearest tube stop. João and the rest of the family have been extremely helpful with tips and they're all lovely and good hearted people. You have to love pets as there's quite a few cats and dogs at the house :) They let us have a quick shower before leaving for the airport which was a bliss! Overall a great choice which I recommend.
