The Space

Come live with real cariocas. Our family will love receiving you at our home!

We have a beautiful loft with separate entrance, with the a view of SUGAR LOAF, with free wi-fi.

We are located 200 m from the colorful staircase Selarón, Convento of the Carmelites, Chácara do Céu Museum, the Ruins Park and other famous tourist spots in the district of Santa Tereza and Old Town.

We are also next to the more Bohemian neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro - the LAPA, where you can hear a good samba, dance with friends and taste the amazing Caipirinha.

Very near you will find the Municipal Theater, Sala Cecilia Meireles, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Modern Art - all accessible within walking distance.

Easy access to public transport metro and bus to other tourist spots like Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf.

The apartment is all new and well decorated. On foggy days you can hear the whistle of ships coming in and out of Guanabara Bay.

  • Firstly i would like to make it be known that we normally stay in a much higher class of accommodation, but due to the high prices during the world cup our level of accommodation had to be lowered. Well firstly the host John and family were very helpful. We initially had the small room which unfortunately was not very comfortable or as clean as it could have been. The accommodation is advertised that it has animals, which is OK, as long as the animals mess is cleaned up, there was a lot of animal mess around the area where we hung our clothes out to dry. We eventually moved into the bigger room which was a lot more comfortable and a bit cleaner. The breakfast is served (email hidden) down the street, of which the menu does not change from day to day.
The neighborhood would probably suit backpackers etc, i certainly would not take my wife or family to the area. The area certainly would not suit elderly or disabled people.
For the cost of the accommodation i suppose it would suit some people, but unfortunately i was not to impressed.

  • This is a nice self-contained basement suite that was clean and well equipped. Unfortunately, due to extremely heavy rain on the day of our arrival, the floor was partly flooded, but Paulo (Doris and Joao's father) had arranged for us to stay next door that night. The next day the floor was still quite wet, but Paulo did his very best to dry out the floor and this worked out OK. Fortunately the floor is tiled and there was no lasting damage. Both Paulo and his son Joao were very helpful, Joao booked our bus tickets for us – even he found the web-site tricky. We had ordered a taxi to take us to the bus station, but when it did not arrive, Paolo took us himself !
The house is just on the edge of slightly dodgy area – after 9pm we were advised not to go down the hill (towards Lapa), but up the hill into Santa Teresa was OK. Santa Teresa has some really nice eating places (but some are also expensive) and great views over the city. It is also very near the famous Selaron steps which are great fun. We also visited an excellent Samba club (Carioca da Gema) which is very close by, in Lapa (but took a taxi back).

  • Me and my boyfriend stayed at Doris and João for 4 days while travelling in Brazil and had a wonderful time in Rio. The room has a separate entrance from the house and it's very big with a nice bathroom. The location is great, right next to the Escalera Selaron between Santa Teresa and Lapa, we walked around and had no safety problems at all even at night (always being careful of not carrying big cameras or valuable things on us). Santa Teresa is a bohemian area where to find lovely restaurants and bars at night, also a few things to see and little shops. We went out in Lapa a couple of nights and it's really fun, at weekends packed with people drinking on the streets and checked out some live music in one of the many samba clubs. Transport is easy, lots of buses to the beach and Gloria is the nearest tube stop. João and the rest of the family have been extremely helpful with tips and they're all lovely and good hearted people. You have to love pets as there's quite a few cats and dogs at the house :) They let us have a quick shower before leaving for the airport which was a bliss! Overall a great choice which I recommend.

  • The house is well located within Santa Tereza, very close to restaurants, metro and arcos da lapa, but also in a safe & quite street. Its is well decorated with all amenities, perhaps it would be better if it had more sun light. When I was there, there was a problem with internet, which according to them is not normal, it is good to check before you go if you need this.

  • A fantastic place, made our stay in Rio so much easier. Apartment small but all you need. Great location in St Teresa, near to great bars and restaurants of the area, but close to city and metro and buses. Lovely to have own entrance and patio, so privacy. But to share breakfast with the family, the opportunity to meet local people to find out more about life and culture in the city and so friendly and helpful.

  • the house of Paul, Doris and their family is amazing, in a really good location (2mn from the selaron stairs) and near from lapa, el centro y santa teresa. Doris's family is really kind and helpful, as we say in french, they've got "le coeur sur la main". We had a very good time in this flat with all mod cons!
    Thank you for this stay!
