About this listing
The Hideaway is a charming little place that's perfect for a romantic getaway or quiet solo retreat. Deck, BBQ, hammock, wooden sauna, full kitchenette, woodstove for cozy fires, wifi, Dish TV, and more! You'll love it! Award: #1 Most Booked in 2013.
The Hideaway's deck with seating for four underneath towering pine trees. Not shown: gas BBQ grill around the corner.
The Hideaway is a romantic little 1-bedroom, 1-bathroom efficiency cabin in Wrightwood, just 5 miles to Mountain High Ski Resort and even less to Big Pines (formerly Navitat) ziplines -- with discounts to both available to our guests (see below).
The Hideaway is perfect for a romantic getaway for 2, a solo retreat for 1, a small family with 1-2 little tykes, or a couple of good friends that don't mind sharing a small space. Larger groups can book it together with our other cabin, Little Pines, which is on the same property.
The Hideaway's cozy bedroom has a romantic canopy. The living area has a futon plus a wall-mounted flat screen TV with Dish Satellite and DVD Player, and an antique wood stove for fires on cozy nights. And WIFI, of course! Many other rentals in Wrightwood do not offer wifi/internet so read the descriptions carefully before you book.
The kitchenette has a unique custom concrete counter, a half-time convection and microwave oven, a one-burner cooktop, and a 3/4 sized refrigerator plus dishes, utensils, toaster, rice cooker, waffle maker, coffee and espresso makers, etc.
The cute little bathroom has an oversized shower; towels and toiletries provided (as are all bed linens). Pedestal sink, views of mountains from bathroom window.
The deck sits under pine trees with a view of the mountains, and has a table and 4 chairs plus there's a large gas BBQ for grilling. Nearby is a hammock under the pine trees.
The garage (not used for parking) has a washer, dryer, bikes, sleds, lots of board games, over 250 DVDs, and a relaxing 2-person wooden sauna with steam rocks.
Short drive or long walk to town. Short walk to hiking and sledding. Easy to find the cabin. Arrive anytime; after booking we'll provide the key code to let yourself in. Have fun!

Interaction with Guests
We live close by and can be on hand if needed, but generally our correspondence is only through email, texts, and sometimes phone calls when necessary. Let yourself in with the key code we provide; come and go at your own convenience. For guests that would like more interaction, we are more than happy to stop by, introduce ourselves, and answer questions about the cabin or the area when we are available, but in our experience most guests prefer to just have their own space.
The Hideaway is located near the edge of a little neighborhood that's surrounded on all sides by mountains. Walk a couple blocks and you'll be in national forest land. Part of the neighborhood includes the Pacific Crest Estates, Wrightwood's most prestigious neighborhood. The neighborhood is very pleasant for walks, even at night when you can see thousands of stars. Or it's easy to get into hiking ground. It's about 2 miles from the cabin to the shops and restaurants in the village, just a little farther to the Big Pines zip lines, the Wrightwood Guest Ranch (for weddings), and Mountain High for skiing, snowboarding, and summertime disc golf.
The driveway has enough space for 2-3 cars. No public transportation is available in Wrightwood, but we do have bikes in the garage that you are free to use.
Other Things to Note
The Hideaway is very private. It's a second unit on the property and faces into the backyard -- you can't even see it from the street. Though it shares the property with our other cabin, Little Pines, it is laid out such that you don't have to interact or even see any guests that may be staying at the other cabin, unless you happen to be accessing the detached garage at the same time. If you rent both cabins together, it is very convenient to go between the two cabins for spending time together with larger groups (up to 11)
Four guests maximum. No smoking inside. No cigarette butts anywhere in the yard or on the property. Please consult the instructions in the cabin on how to use the Half-Time Oven and other appliances. No pets allowed without the permission of the owners and additional pet fee of $30. Four guests maximum at any time.
When the weather's nice you can open up the French doors to the deck and let the mountain breezes come in.
My wife and I stayed at Barbara's cottage over our wedding weekend. It's a little smaller than I'd expected, but Barbara and Stu were excellent hosts. They generously allowed us to check in earlier and later, and came with spare keys once I'd lost the original set. They were really great about everything.
This one bedroom unit is cozy and clean. However, if you're looking for a quiet retreat, this may not be the right place for you.
The houses in the neighborhood were built right next to each other. We were able to clearly hear neighbors conversing, kids playing, and dogs barking.
I agree with the other reviewer about the $50 cleaning fee. If we have to make the bed when we check in, remove sheets before we check out, take out all trash, as well as wash and dry dishes, the $50 cleaning fee does not seem reasonable. A few other things to point out to fellow renters: The grill in the yard was dusty and dirty - you might not want to use it. The wifi was very weak - you should assume you have no internet access.
The living space was nice and the host was very responsive, but this place definitely did not offer the peace and quiet hideaway we were looking for.
The cleaning fee is the going rate we have to pay to have the cabin professionally cleaned including laundry of towels and bedding, plus paper towels/toilet paper/toiletries provided, coffee supplies, etc. Other rentals in town charge $35 just for a linens fee, or charge similar cleaning fee but don't provide any linens. Also it is standard for any rental anywhere for guests to remove their trash and wash their dishes, which helps to eliminate odors and other issues if such things are allowed to sit around an empty house (housekeeping can't always come right away). The grill has now been cleaned -- thanks for the note. And the wifi is definitely an issue in a mountain town like Wrightwood. There is no DSL available here, so we have to depend on satellite internet, which will feel slow if you're used to high speed DSL. In more ways than one Wrightwood is a place to come to enjoy a slower pace of life!
For future guests: the Hideaway is in a small neighborhood surrounded by mountains. Some people think they are getting a place in the woods, but Wrightwood is a small mountain town and there are no rentals here that are isolated in the forest (national forest land; no rentals allowed). However, we do have another rental about the same size as Hideaway, called Chickadee, that is on the edge of the neighborhood and has a large woodsy front and back yard, giving it more space.
I literally thought I was going to die of relaxation. If you are looking for a great weekend getaway, this place is perfect! It is a clean, quaint, little space tucked away in the nicer part of Wrightwood. The amenities offered are incredible given the low price; a sauna, bicycles, laundry facilities, television, and a great shower. The owners have great communication and provide excellent care to their guests. Highly recommended.
Very Cozy and Private stay. Barbara had everything I could possibly need stocked in the hideaway and was quick and responsive to any questions. Hope to stay again!
The HIDEAWAY was a fantastic getaway for my family. The house is neatly set up with all the basic and even more amenities available. The house was clean and just as described. The backyard was excellent. small little table, tire swing and a hammock was available.
The neighborhood was nice and quiet. People were very friendly saying hello as we took a walk around the neighborhood.
In the garage, the washer and dryer along with board games and bicycles were there for use. Even some extra jackets for the cold winter travelers were available in the garage.
Overall, the experience was very nice. My 5 year old son loved every minute of it and did not want to leave the place. If you like being surrounded by nature, I highly recommend checking out this place. I'd visit again and we plan to visit again during the fall/winter season.
Just had a great weekend at the Hideaway! My girlfriend and I holed up for the weekend and enjoyed the outdoor patio, nostalgia-inducing board games and cozy space. A great place to rest and hang out after some beautiful hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail!
Barbara was super friendly and helpful, which made our stay a breeze. I'd definitely recommend this space as an easy couple's weekend getaway close to LA.
The actual space inside the hideaway is very functional, but quite small (could be a bit awkward if you were REALLY tall). So only go with people you really like :)
