The Space

Get an entire house to yourself on the Big Island. Leave your world behind and experience life in the heart of the Hawaiian countryside.

Situated on the Hilo side of the Big Island in the friendly and quiet community of Puna Beach Palisades, our home on a 1/2 acre lot, has sweeping ocean and garden views. It's just 3 blocks from the water and a 10-minute walk to beautiful Kehena black sand beach.

An open floor plan makes the main hale, which sleeps two, especially comfortable and romantic. It includes a king-size bed, full kitchen, a lovely living area, lanais, and an incredible indoor/outdoor shower.

A screened ohana in our tropical garden has a queen-size bed and environmentally friendly 1/2 bath for two additional guests. You haven’t experienced Hawaii until you’ve awakened to singing birds in an authentic Big Island kipuka!

We pay a lot of attention to detail, and you’ll notice it, too, in the quality of our amenities―like high-thread count, all-cotton bed linens, fluffy bath and beach towels, teak furniture on the lanai, a convenient washer/dryer, outdoor gas grill and a fully-equipped kitchen.

  • What a wonderful way to unwind. We loved everything about this place. Especially the outdoor shower, amazing. We would definitely stay here again on a return trip. So many absolutely beautiful things to see and do in the local area just not enough time.

  • What a fabulous place Escape2puna is! Beautifully done interior with good quality fixtures, beautiful stone, very pleasing color schemes, and terrific views inside and on the deck! There were just two of us, and it was perfect. We wanted to stay in the Ohana house in the garden (which accommodates at least two more), but were out and about so much we didn't have time his trip. Will definitely come back here to stay if on the Big Island. Greg and Carolyn are terrific hosts and left good detailed instructions. Oh, I did I mention the incredible clean wonderful Hawaiian air that came in from the breeze over the ocean! Was very healing!!

  • This was a wonderful spot near the coast on the South/East end of the Big Island. Walkable to a black sand beach. Great rides in all directions. About 45 minutes from the Volcano. The little town of Pahoa had a couple of really good restaurants and several places to buy provisions and an internet cafe. The house was beautiful; Private, Immaculate, decorated beautifully, comfortable and a large deck. The Ohana alone was worth the trip. Accurate info packet sent well ahead of our arrival. My call to the owners asking a question was answered immediately and accurately. VERY nice people anxious to make sure all was right, which it was.

  • Greg and Carolyn were gracious, helpful, and thoughtful hosts, and we had a fabulous stay at their house. In addition to being comfortable, scrupulously clean, and well supplied for cooking and laundry, the house was outfitted with little "extras" that enhanced our trip -- snorkeling gear, a picnic cooler, and guides to local spots. We particularly enjoyed star watching and listening to the waves and night sounds on the lanai. I'm already daydreaming about my next stay.

  • Greg is of the best hosts. He checked with us the first day of arrival and stopped by the make sure everything is good is the house the next morning. He also bring us umbrella and maps. The place is quiet and a ideal gateway. The deck is HUGE and amazing. We sat at the deck at night to view all the stars come from the ocean after a tried day. Such a treatment!

Over all, a great place to stay with good price. Although the cell receipt is bad in that area. But the telephone located in the house is very helpful.

  • We had our stay at Escape2Puna during our one week on Big Island end of November. The location is very good to explore the island. It's a bit longer trip to go to the western parts, but we found the most interesting spots were in the Hilo region. And meanwhile the Saddle Road is in a very good shape (actually we found no better road on the island), and at least Alamo allows officially to use it. So it is a good shortcut to the west coast. The house has the wow-effect. The apartment is very spacy and optimally divided into the four areas for living, cooking/eating, sleeping and a bathroom. The high ceiling makes the room feel extra large and is probably very good for a comfortable room climate. The extra outside shower is very nice and exciting. Everything is very comfortable, clean and well equipped. We didn't miss anything and felt like home. The apartment itself is one thing, but when you look outside you are feeling as if you were in a deep jungle. The sounds of frogs and birds at night are making this feeling perfect. We didn't experience this on any other island of Hawaii. We had a lot of rain during our stay. Otherwise we probably would have spent more time with just sitting on the big outside deck and enjoying the views and the nature. You have a nice view to the sea, overlooking the dense tropical tree vegetation. The garden behind the house actually is a botanical garden with lots of exotic flowers, worth paying an extra entrance fee. And the whole area is very quiet. Most times you only hear the sounds of nature. For those who like to stay connected to the outside world: we found no cell phone coverage, but the house is equipped with free Wi-Fi and a working phone. Very useful is the possibility to do some laundry. After 3 weeks of travel this was very refreshing. We didn't meet Greg personally, but he gave us very good instructions on how to access the house and to find everything. He stood in touch with us via e-mail and phone to be shure everything went ok. He was very friendly and helpful. Inside the house there are more hints on what to see or do in the area and some instructions on what to do when having problems with the house installations. But we had no problems at all. The week in Gregs house was an excellent experience. We felt very comfortable and forgot the time. It was an unforgettable part of our holiday. We can only recommend this house. It's a must-book when you are on Big Island. Hopefully Pele spares this home from her lava flows forever! btw. the name of the gecko in the house is Gordon. He most times hides somewhere. When you see him and treat him well he will not bite ;-) Thank you very much Greg and have a nice Christmas!...

  • The house is just as described and shown on photos, with the addition of a fantastic large new deck. Comfortable, clean, and set in a beautiful location. Good and clear communication with Greg. Perfect stay, would highly recommend.

  • Greg, thank you so much for everything. This house is amazing, and the price is incredible for everything you get. We loved the general area the house was in (Hwy 137!). The property was so beautiful, with fruit trees and vines, and just such a cozy, wild feel. I am SO sad we didn't get to sleep in the garden ohana, which was one of the most exciting features of the home. The house was great and allowed us to stay in every night and make dinner and relax. The shower was fun too! I just can't say enough nice things . . .

  • We came to the big island to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday and to have a getaway. This secluded gem of a house was a bit of a drive from the Kona airport but well worth it. Upon entering the house we noticed the cleanliness; which we place high importance on. The outdoor/indoor shower was definitely a highlight, looking over the lush trees and garden in the backyard, and the ocean backdrop. We enjoyed cooking dinner and eating on the porch listening to the natural Hawaiin sounds. The king size bed was comfortable and Greg and Carolyn provided earplugs as the wildlife became heightened in the night hours. They were very accommodating, lending us some olive oil the first night of our stay. Greg came over the following day to educate us on the surroundings. The ohana was nice to visit in the evenings as it felt as if we were in a jungle. Lush gardens, rolling cliff sides of volcanic rock, Hilo's marketplace & waterfalls, black sand beaches and crashing waves lend to the beauty of the house's surrounding sites. Be aware that the area gets quite a bit of rain, periodically, although we always seemed to make it out before it drenched us. Driving is a must in addition to heading towards Kona for clearer waters and sandy beaches. We highly recommend this house as a getaway and plan on returning in the future. Thanks Greg & Carolyn for providing us with this amazing opportunity!
