The Space

You don’t need to be a mountain goat to make it up our stairs, but you’ll certainly feel like one when you get to the top. Pause for a moment to take in the view, then head through the main door of the house into the shared foyer ( The house belongs to Bob, but the apartment is all yours) and turn right to go into your own private, secure, and peaceful hillside abode.

With two generous rooms, a large bath, and an efficiency kitchen, there is plenty of space for a couple, a few friends, or a small family. Surrounded by warm color and natural light, you’ll soon find yourself relaxed and refreshed, ready to explore the town or visit the University.

The house is situated to take maximum advantage of its hillside location. Both rooms have six-foot-high windows, through which you’ll enjoy a breathtaking vista of towering redwoods, the sparkling bay, and the distant cityscape of San Francisco.

From the comfort of the stylish living room couch, you can enjoy the view or snuggle down with a friend in front of the large flat-screen TV, complete with Amazon and Netflix streaming, a new, Sony 'smart' DVD player with Bluray, and music streaming. Should you require extra sleeping accommodations, the couch is easily modified to a double bed.

The bedroom, decorated in warm hues, has an ample queen bed, perfectly situated for waking up to a morning view of the bay or for laying back to watch the sunset. Plug your iPod, iTouch or iPhone into the clock radio to charge or to listen to your favorite tunes. A writer’s desk is just the place for penning postcards or tweeting about your enviable vacation (or for catching up on work, if you must). Both living room and bedroom have access to the large bathroom, and there is an abundance of closet space throughout to tuck away your belongings.

Sit by the window table for a romantic dinner overlooking the bay, or expand the table for a family breakfast. The well-stocked efficiency kitchen, complete with mini-fridge, microwave, hot-plate, and sink, is perfect for making a quick meal before heading out to see the sights, or for warming up some left-overs from one of the great nearby restaurants.

Please note that there are 81 steps to get to the apartment and that it is a separate, self-contained unit, which shares a front door with the owner. (Then there is a second locked door to the unit that is exclusively for guests!)

N.B. We are LGBTQQI Friendly!

Guest Access

Guests have access to laundry facilities and the entire downstairs apartment.

Interaction with Guests

We are the folks from Book A Nook, a relational property management outfit. We love to meet our guests and see how we can make their stay a stellar experience, which is why so many of our guests return! The owner of the main house is a wonderfully friendly and helpful author, musician, concert producer, and long-time Berkeley resident.

The Neighborhood

We are only a short walk or drive to so many great things! Both the University of California and the Graduate Theological Union are within a ten-fifteen minute stroll, and yet well away from the fray of campus noise. As such, the neighborhood is filled with professors, scientists, artists and writers. Our guests also choose us for location, which is ideal no matter if you’re here to visit a student, teach a summer program, attend an ordination, or catch a Cal game (only ten minutes walk from the stadium!).

A fifteen minute walk downhill takes you to the north side of the campus, which has over twenty restaurants and several coffee shops, including the Brewed Awakening, voted the best cafe to hang out and study in in Berkeley. The European-style cafe, Nefeli, and Yali's Cafe, are also very popular.

A lovely one-mile walk (did we mention Berkeley’s many magical hillside pathways and secret staircases), are all the restaurants of the Gourmet Ghetto, including Chez Panisse, Saul’s Deli, the Cheeseboard, and so many more! Take an afternoon stroll to the Thursday afternoon Farmer’s Market, which has organic produce, as well as a mouth-watering array of dinner options for carry-out (or sit and eat on the sidewalk with the locals).

The Greek Theater and Zellerbach Hall (all the most famous acts come to these two venues) are just a few minutes’ drive, or a 25 minute walk. About the same distance, in downtown Berkeley, is the fabulous Freight & Salvage Coffee House (Home of Traditional Music).

Also within blocks of the house are three of Berkeley’s favorite city parks: the Rose Garden (romantic and peaceful), Cordornices (perfect for kids), and the hilltop Glendale-La Loma. Head uphill, on foot or by car, to the wonderful and expansive Tilden Park, with miles of hiking trails, a swimming lake, and always a kid favorite, the Little Farm (with goats, cows, chickens and more). Venture down to the nearby Berkeley Art Center, featuring fantastic exhibits of local artists.

Solano Avenue, with its many boutiques, ethnic restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries, and coffee shops, is a quick drive or pleasant walk, and a great place to while away an afternoon.

Getting Around

The #65 bus, which stops just an eight-minute walk away, runs right down to the Berkeley BART. From BART, the entire Bay Area and both airports are easily accessible.

Other Things to Note

The climb to the apartment has eighty-one stairs (we’ve counted), but it’s so very worth every step! However, this is not a handicap accessible unit, nor is particularly suited to someone with vertigo or difficulty navigating stairs. The apartment shares a foyer with the main house, but once inside, your space is completely self-contained, secure, and very private. This is a perfect apartment for those visiting the University of California.

Come on up! You’ll be glad you did!
