Get an entire house to yourself on the Big Island. Leave your world behind and experience life in the heart of the Hawaiian countryside.
Situated on the Hilo side of the Big Island in the friendly and quiet community of Puna Beach Palisades, our home on a 1/2 acre lot, has sweeping ocean and garden views. It's just 3 blocks from the water and a 10-minute walk to beautiful Kehena black sand beach.
An open floor plan makes the main hale, which sleeps two, especially comfortable and romantic. It includes a king-size bed, full kitchen, a lovely living area, lanais, and an incredible indoor/outdoor shower.
A screened ohana in our tropical garden has a queen-size bed and environmentally friendly 1/2 bath for two additional guests. You haven’t experienced Hawaii until you’ve awakened to singing birds in an authentic Big Island kipuka!
We pay a lot of attention to detail, and you’ll notice it, too, in the quality of our amenities―like high-thread count, all-cotton bed linens, fluffy bath and beach towels, teak furniture on the lanai, a convenient washer/dryer, outdoor gas grill and a fully-equipped kitchen.

This was a wonderful spot near the coast on the South/East end of the Big Island. Walkable to a black sand beach. Great rides in all directions. About 45 minutes from the Volcano. The little town of Pahoa had a couple of really good restaurants and several places to buy provisions and an internet cafe. The house was beautiful; Private, Immaculate, decorated beautifully, comfortable and a large deck. The Ohana alone was worth the trip. Accurate info packet sent well ahead of our arrival. My call to the owners asking a question was answered immediately and accurately. VERY nice people anxious to make sure all was right, which it was.
Greg and Carolyn were gracious, helpful, and thoughtful hosts, and we had a fabulous stay at their house. In addition to being comfortable, scrupulously clean, and well supplied for cooking and laundry, the house was outfitted with little "extras" that enhanced our trip -- snorkeling gear, a picnic cooler, and guides to local spots. We particularly enjoyed star watching and listening to the waves and night sounds on the lanai. I'm already daydreaming about my next stay.
great place to stay. the open layout is great, and the deck is the perfect place to drink coffee in the morning. hope to go there again.
Great place at my favorite part of the island. If you want to connect with nature and disconnect from the stressful life then that's the place to go.
Wish we would have had more time to spent at the house itself. There are so many activities you can do on the island that we were gone almost all days.
Thanks for having us as guest. Markus
My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Escape2Puna in early November. It is peaceful and beautiful and we would highly recommend it. My biggest disappointment was that it is not easy to get down to the Kehena black sand beach that is close by. We never did go there, the descent was too rocky and slippery for us. There were cars parked there every day, so others did go.
The open floor plan of the house gave us plenty of room. With all of the screens on windows and doors, there was enough ventilation so that we were usually cool. It was always pleasant in the evenings. I would think that it may be a little stuffy if summer temperatures are warmer than the November temps when we were there. It is also a great spot to enjoy a rainy afternoon or evening with all of the windows open.
The little peepers (frogs) are amazingly loud at night but surprisingly, the sound was so omnipresent that it was restful and drowned out any other sounds and put us to sleep every night. We liked the small development in which the house sits, no other house seems close even though there are several near. You can barely see the top of another house from the back and side porches We also liked the semi-outside shower.
The internet is relatively slow, but fine for email and basic web surfing. Don't try to watch much video. We used the washer and dryer in the garage, no problem.
The only way in and out of Puna is along state road 130, which connects to highway 11. Traffic is very heavy on Highway 130 going south from Hilo in the afternoons. It backs up 2-3 miles where the road goes from four lanes to two.
So, in summary, we like the house very much, but couldn't get to the Kehena beach and found the heavy traffic tiring in the afternoons. However, highway 137 in Puna has several interesting places to visit and enjoy the lava seascapes and you don't need to travel over highway 130 to enjoy highway 137.
I and my parents thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Greg's unique house. There were so many things starting from garden laden with fruit trees to the outdoor/indoor shower that reminded me of the tropical surroundings I grew up in. The house is an amazing setting and Greg has taken great care of every little detail from kitchen to living room to sleeping area. Proximity to the black sand beach provides an easy opportunity for viewing sunrise and sunset at beach. Thanks a lot Greg for letting us stay at your wonderful house.
Only reason why I am not rating this place as full 5 star is due to its distance from the main highway. If you are short on time and need to drive to the popular tourist spots on big island then you have to drive a lot.
We stayed for 4 nights. The house is small, lovely, comfortable, with high quality fittings and furnishings. The view is great, looking out to the ocean from the bedroom, and no streetlights so the stars are bright, if it's not raining. There are indeed fruit trees on the grounds (we harvested limes and a few bananas). We had been warned about mosquitos, but by Minnesota standards they were imperceptible -- we sat out on the deck both dawn and dusk, and didn't notice any.
Greg's directions were clear enough to get us to the door after dark, in the rain, with no difficulty. However, the key box on the door was balky, and difficult to open in the dark. Also, we would have liked more local information: we never did figure out how to get down to the closest beaches, and we only found the Wednesday and Friday Kalapana market and music by chance (it's great!).
Overall, a great area to visit, and a good house to stay in.
Escape2puna translates to Escape to Paradise. Greg's home is exactly what we had hoped for and much, much more. The location is ideal and very convenient to many of the Big Island attractions we wanted to experience, including Kehena Black Sand Beach, Champagne Pond, Kapoho Tidal Pools, Kalapana, Volcano National Park, and Hilo Farmer's Market. Greg's home is beautifully and comfortably furnished. As there aren't many nearby restaurants, the full kitchen was a perfect alternative allowing us to cook up all the great fresh fruits, vegetables and cheeses we found at the Hilo Farmer's Market. The outdoor shower was the icing on the cake for us. I took two (or three) showers a day just for the experience. I can't imagine finding a better place to stay in the area. We can't wait to return next year!
We absolutely loved this place and thought it was perfect for what could have easily been one of the best trips we've ever taken. We loved the home and found it to be very comfortable with everything we needed to make our stay convenient. The indoor/outdoor shower was one of our favorite features in the house and one of the things we will definitely miss the most. Another thing that we loved was the Lanai; It's the perfect place to start your morning with the sunrise or end your night gazing at the stars and listening to the natural sounds made by the local resident creatures. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly and the perfect place to reflect or explore and interact. Plenty of stuff to do within walking or a short drive distance away.
This home will always be a bit extra special to us, because during our stay we took a trip to the summit of Mauna Kea, where I surprised my girlfriend with a proposal. :)
Puna was the first stop on our Hawaii honeymoon and we had the pleasure of staying in Greg's lovely little studio cottage for 3 nights. We absolutely loved our time here--wish that it could have been longer so that we could enjoy the ohana, but alas--we did not make it inside. This cottage is the perfect place for a couple to grab a little peace and quiet. We first arrived after 24 straight hours of travel and were so exhausted--the bed felt like absolute heaven. I was worried that my initial exhaustion might have made my assessment of the bed a little lofty, but it was just as heavenly the next few nights--we slept so well here! The sound of the frogs at night and waking up to the wind in the trees and the sight of the ocean was just incredible. We loved the outdoor shower and all of the fruit/avocado trees around. Though we didn't have much time, we did make it out to Volcano NP and a lot of the local sites...Greg has some great recommendations in the welcome book so be sure to check that out. If you go into Hilo, be sure to have breakfast or lunch at Paul's...great little place. Though we didn't meet Greg in person, he called to check up on us when we arrived and was ever so pleasant over the phone. Thanks, Greg--we loved staying at your place and hope to have the opportunity to do so again!!
