About This Listing
Get an entire house to yourself on the Big Island. Leave your world behind and experience life in the heart of the Hawaiian countryside.
Situated on the Hilo side of the Big Island in the friendly and quiet community of Puna Beach Palisades, our home on a 1/2 acre lot, has sweeping ocean and garden views. It's just 3 blocks from the water and a 10-minute walk to beautiful Kehena black sand beach.
An open floor plan makes the main hale, which sleeps two, especially comfortable and romantic. It includes a king-size bed, full kitchen, a lovely living area, lanais, and an incredible indoor/outdoor shower.
A screened ohana in our tropical garden has a queen-size bed and environmentally friendly 1/2 bath for two additional guests. You haven’t experienced Hawaii until you’ve awakened to singing birds in an authentic Big Island kipuka!
We pay a lot of attention to detail, and you’ll notice it, too, in the quality of our amenities―like high-thread count, all-cotton bed linens, fluffy bath and beach towels, teak furniture on the lanai, a convenient washer/dryer, outdoor gas grill and a fully-equipped kitchen.

Our guests love our Puna hale!
This house was amazing! Beautifully appointed, with the most amazing outdoor shower. We were so happy to have the washer/dryer available. The location is gorgeous and the singing frogs make you feel like you're deep in the jungle. :)
The location is great, too - we were just a few miles from the Kapoho tide pools, Alahanui park (warm volcanic pool - awesome!) and the Kalapana lava flow. Amazing!
Greg was very nice; we had a chance to meet as we were leaving. We felt very at home there. (Also, thanks for the coffee!)
Garantiert kein Schicki-Mickie!
Hi Heike and Torgrim, it was a pleasure to host you. Did you ever get my e-mail address? I sent it from my regular e-mail account, though it may have still routed though Airbnb. I think I have your actual address, so let me know, if you didn't I'll resend.
We had a great experience staying here! The house was clean and comfortable, the bed was awesome, the small kitchen was well- appointed (with better-than average cookware!). Greg and Carolyn called and made sure we were all set to go, had recommendations on things to do, were very helpful. Its a great house in a quiet neighborhood (dark at night- lots of stars) within walking distance of the ocean. Its a ways from town, but we liked that. Lots of cool places to explore within an easy drive. We wanted to stay there longer :) Would definitely recommend.
A very nice and excellent equipped house.
Very clean and comfortable.
We had a wonderful experience staying at Greg and Carolyn's hale. Both the main area and the Ohana were very clean and comfortable. My husband and I, along with our 9 month old stayed in the Ohana and it was a very magical place. We normally love camping in tents, and since we've had our baby, we have not been this close to nature with all the screen windows allowing all the sounds and tropical breezes in. Glamorous camping in some ways, and you truly are sung to sleep by the tree frogs every night (I miss that already!). We occasionally had rain to contend with, but it was not a big deal. The Ohana is well protected by the beautiful canopy trees and other tropical plants - well thought out location and design. Our friends had a great time sleeping in the main home. Very comfortable accommodations, including a nice kitchen to cook in, grill, and a very wonderful indoor/outdoor shower. We all wish we could have a shower like that back on the mainland!
Greg and Carolyn were great to work with too. If we had any questions about the house, or aspects of it, they were prompt to respond. Even prior to booking, they got back to us right away.
The location is wonderful for really getting into the local vibe. The black sands beach, Uncle John's night market, all the beautiful scenic spots drive along the coast provides that is not too far from the house, all make it so very special. Those are just a few of the things we were able to experience during our stay.
We'd stay here again, and very much recommend it to one or two couples (even if you have a baby or two like we did).
Mahalo, Greg and Carolyn!
Our experience in Kalpana was the highlight of our 3-week trip to the Big Island. The hosts were quick to respond to our pre-stay emails. They greeted us upon arrival and generously offered to be available as needed. The neighborhood was lovely and quiet. The neighbors we met on our walks were very friendly. The home was very private, comfortable and met all our needs. My husband especially enjoyed sleeping in the ohana. The location was perfect: A 10 minute drive to the Kalapana market, lava flow and swimming beach. Numerous scenic pullouts along the Red Road for sunning, whale watching, viewing. An easy 30 minute drive to the Volcanoes National Park, Zoo, Lava Trees State Park and Champagne Pond. Love Kalapana!
Booking with the Buettner's was easy, they were very attentive and responded quickly to questions. Greg contacted us to make sure all was working well for us, which was very thoughtful. The accommodations were exactly as described. The house was very well kept. The balcony provided ocean views and views of the rainforest. Although there is no cable TV, which was perfect, there was wi-fii and many travel guides, a nice collection of movies, board games.
As a added bonus, an ohana, guest bedroom, sat off the main house, which was also well kept. It was a wonderful experience sleeping out there listening to all the birds and frogs.
The neighborhood itself was quiet and safe and walking distance to the ocean. The only downside is that house is a bit far from markets, stores, etc... But since we were looking to get away, it was perfect.
Glad everything went well for you. The Ohana is fun isn't it? The garden is a special place, being what in Hawaiian is referred to as a Kipuka, a small oasis in the middle of an old lava field. They have richer soil, better water retention and more luxuriant foliage. Hope to see you again in the future. Thank you.
