About this listing

Nestled among the hardwood forest of Columbia County this secluded, handcrafted cabin offers tranquility within reach of all the Columbia-Berkshire attractions.

The space

Nestled among the hardwood forest of Columbia County this secluded, handcrafted cabin offers tranquility within reach of all the Columbia-Berkshire attractions. Hand built by a local family from locally sourced pine and bluestone this 1,500 square foot cabin in the perfect place to rest and recharge among the birch trees. The 2 acre property is 2.5 miles from a paved road and a few minutes walk from state forest land - ideal if you want to immerse yourself in nature for a few precious days and forget the sounds of city life.

Deer, squirrels, raccoons, hawks and owls frequent the property. You may even see a bobcat or hear the coyotes in the distance. The large, screened porch perched among the branches looking towards the sun setting over the Catskills encourages hours spent taking in the birdsong as the light changes.

Birch Cabin can sleep up to 4 people but is most comfortable for 2. A queen bed in the loft provides cool, summer sleeping under the open skylight and a queen sized sleeper-sofa in the den can accomodate guests or children.

The large screened porch is furnished with a hand built pine picnic table and Adirondack style chairs for summer dining. From the porch you can easily access the large outdoor fire pit, the den, loft or the main room. In the summer, the porch usually becomes the most used room in the house.

In cooler weather the large indoor dining table can easily accomodate 6-8 while basking in the warmth of the wood stove. The well stocked kitchen has everything you need to create all your own meals including a modern 5-burner gas cooking stove and cast-iron and copper cookware. In cooler weather the wood stove heats the cabin - there is always a good supply of seasoned wood for burning.

When you feel like a walk just open up the door and head out. Miles of dirt road surround the cabin so you can walk for hours and usually come across very few cars. You can walk or take a short drive to 2 state forests within a couple of miles of Birch Cabin that offer wonderful hiking trails, mountain top views and a pond for canoeing. With a little more driving you can access the Appalachian Trail and numerous other parks, state forest and trails along the New York - Massachusetts border.

When you are ready to head into town you can drive to Chatham (NY) in 10 minutes, Hudson (NY), Great Barrington (MA) and Lennox (MA) in 25 minites. These towns offer local, organic groceries, a great selection of restaurants, movie theaters and antique and gift shops. In 45 minutes you can be in Albany or Rhinebeck NY. The drive from NYC usually takes about 2.5 hours.

We had the best time at Kat's cabin. The house is beautiful and comfortable with a well-equipped kitchen and a great shower. We loved the woodsy location - maximum peace/quiet/privacy, but close enough to town. It was the perfect getaway.

The cabin is very cosy and cute! It feels secluded but is really close to Chatham, Ghent, and not too far from Hudson either. You definitely feel away. If you're comfortable with a more rustic, woods-y feel, you'll love this place. Overall a wonderful stay!

The listing description and photos are accurate. What an amazing space! Peace and quiet, surrounded by woods (but just down the road from a few neighbors, and a few minutes' drive to Austerlitz or Great Barrington). Good wireless internet too. The stars looked incredible at night, and during the day, we saw a lot of wild deer. The Cabin has a kitchen, refrigerator, and a french press, which was very convenient. Kat was a great host, and we had a fantastic time.

The cabin is nicely located in the middle of the woods, you cannot see the sky! So many leaves! The interior decoration is beautiful, but with time passing, nature is moving right into the house: spiders are everywhere, the kitchen, the barbecue and floors need a thorough cleaning and we profited of the company of a chubby mouse. We found mouse droppings in the kitchen, on the toaster... Also the surroundings need to be better taken care of. I understand that it's not easy to maintain a country home, but because of all this, we did not feel comfortable. We informed Kat, but got no response, as she wasn't connected due to a family meeting. All in all, we felt this was an expensive location.

We had a fantastic weekend using the cabin as our homebase. The cabin is very secluded, reachable by a drive where we passed a flock of baby turkeys and many deer. Love the decor, which is very cozy yet modern. Kat was a great host and gave us tips for where to visit within the area.

Birch cabin was lovely -- a peaceful weekend retreat surrounded in the woods. Kat left explicit and easy-to-follow directions about arriving at the cabin, and and the place was just as pictured: cozy and comfortable! The birdsong from the deck, the wood stove on chilly evenings, the screened-in porch, all made for a wonderful weekend away from the city. If you're looking for someplace secluded and quiet, where you can stare into the trees while sipping coffee on the deck, we can heartily recommend Birch Cabin!
