Cool Wood Cabin Algarve, Portugal

Cabin - Entire home/apt · Caminho Agrícola São Faustino, Loulé, Faro District 8100, Portugal

The Space

We have two cabins which are 2m apart the other is the Pixie Hut at https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/93545) and share kitchen & bathroom facilities so please be aware you might not be entirely alone if the other cabin gets booked at the same time! The cabins can be rented together or by separate couples.

Small Children
Anyone under the age of 5 is free but having said that I should warn you that our environment is rather wild and so having small children here requires constant vigilance. On top of that the pixie house has a small spiral staircase, which is irresistible for small (email hidden)t the best recipe for a restful holiday. But then again, if you have under 5's with you I don't imagine anywhere is all that restful ;)

Remote & Wild
We are situated in the hills just 15 minutes drive from the sea front of Portugal's Algarve coast, (and 30 minutes from the open ocean on the west coast). The cabins blend in perfectly with its natural surroundings of fruit trees, hills and birdlife - the perfect spot for a retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. You'll definitely need a car to get around the Algarve!

The style of accommodation is SMALL, clean and simple, with wooden furniture, antiques, artwork, books and a few curiosities from my travels to create a cosy, interesting ambient.

This particular cabin sleeps 2 people but we can add a camp bed or mattress if necessary. The style of accommodation is clean and simple, with wooden furniture, antiques, artwork, books and a few curiosities from my travels to create a cosy, interesting ambient. We have a little thatched Pixie Hut which is right next door and sleeps 4 people in two separate rooms linked by a spiral staircase.

You DEFINITELY need to rent a car since we're off the beaten track here and although there is a bus stop a 20 minute walk away you can't exactly depend up on it......shall we say. And sometimes it even arrives too early which is obviously worse than if it were regularly late!

Please print the driving instructions to get here rather than the map as they are far more reliable and they also (email hidden)-ordinates since the roads are not exactly signposted in this rural area!

We provide bathroom towels for you and dishtowels for the kitchen. But you will need to bring your own beach towels.

If you fancy a night camping down at the river we have a 3 man tent which you could borrow,

What else......I think that's everything. But if there's something I've forgotten or something you need please just ask and I imagine most requests can be fulfilled.

Facilities:
Internet & Wi-Fi
The signal doesn't quite reach down to the cabin so if you'd like to check your mail come up to our porch and go online there. At night you're welcome to come inside.

Shower/Toilet/washing
The shower block is a short walk through the garden. This is gas powered so its always hot. We have a small gym as well for the worthiest of our visitors! There is a washing machine just outside which you can use if needed. Please bring your own beach towels as our towels are only for the shower.

We have a second (solar) shower and toilet attached to the back of the new kitchen and they are only a couple of meters away from your cabin. Be warned though that on a cloudy day of course the shower won't be warm.

Self-Catering
There is a large, wooden kitchen equipped very BASICALLY with a fridge, a cooker/oven and wash basin as well as storage for food and utensils & plates. There is also an out door bbq area for the intrepid visitor. You will need to buy your own food, drink, and all the things you usually require for living. We provide bathroom towels for you and dishtowels for the kitchen. Just bring your own beach towels.

Both showers and the kitchen facilities are shared with the other cabin.

Art & Culture:
Fonte da Estrela is owned by a sculptor so there are studio facilities available on request. For the painters the landscape is perfect for water colour in autumn and spring and in the summer, a stronger palette of oils will surely keep you occupied. We can send you off in the direction of a number of bijoux art galleries showing the work of new and emerging artists as well as some by the more established. We also have an art trail which will take you to the studios of individual artists living and working here in the Algarve.

Art Classes:
If painting or drawing is something you'd like to do then I can arrange to have a professional artist to come and teach for a morning or a day. POA.

Yoga:
There are a number of yoga teachers and studios around. Just ask and I'll show you the schedules. A class costs 10 euros less if more than ten sessions are purchased in one go.

Water Sports:
There is good surfing to be had during the summer and winter as well as kite surfing and body boarding. Equipment can be hired at the sea front. There are boats to be hired and fishing trips to go on as well as diving. Also you can take a ferry from Olhão or Faro to local islands and empty beaches that go on for miles even in the height of summer.

Local Amenities:
Just 10mins away there is a beautiful river with pools and small rapids and idyllic picnic spots. A 15 minute drive takes you to the nearest beaches, and the excellent, public swimming pools in Loulé. Aside from that we overlook a natural reserve so there are plenty of good walking, cycling, painting and bird-spotting opportunities. Horse riding can also be arranged.

Food & Sight Seeing:
There are a good many, affordable local restaurants as well as some very up market dining experiences to be had in the area. (See: (website hidden)_Algarve.html). If you want self catering then the local grocer is just down the road or the nearest large supermarket in Loulè which is 15 minutes away. And on Saturdays there is a terrific gypsy market as well as food and veg market in the town. With its rich past the Algarve has many historic towns, castles, ruins, Roman burial grounds and natural sights to visit along the coast.

Music: During the summer the Algarve is rife with music festivals and local towns compete with each other to hold their own festivals. There's a great jazz festival in July and concerts throughout summer with international artists as well as local bands and musicians playing. Ask for more details when you know the dates of your holiday.

Transport:
Faro airport is 20 mins away, and the nearest train station is 15 mins away in Loulé. Local buses are cheap and take you to Spain or the beautiful, cultural city of Lisbon for day trips.

Interaction with Guests

I live a stones throw away from the cabins but aside from being available for questions or help of any kind I try to respect the privacy of my guests by leaving them to do their own thing.

The Neighborhood

The thing I love most about where we live is the tranquility and the birdsong. Late afternoon is my favourite time when the light here is extraordinary and makes the garden look like spun gold.

  • This was the second visit to Toin's place for our little family - three of us - my husband, myself and our bouncy 6 year old son ( nearly 7 ). We came as strangers 8 months ago and stayed in the Pixie Hut alongside the Cabin and returned as friends this time to spend another week in a magic place that brought the 3 of us such joy. I can't write any more about my passion for what a stay in the Cabin or Pixie Hut can offer - I run out of superlatives. My last review was cut off by Airbnb because it was too long! I even made a Youtube video of our holiday pics set to music last time about it I was so inspired - I think you have to search for it "The Pixie Hut - Finding Fonte de Estrela" as I can't post a link.

OK - what you NEED to know :- Read Toin's information - it is detailed and perfectly accurate. Take exit 11 on the A22 . ( We sometimes thought it was 12). You need a car but you really are only 15 ish minutes from gorgeous beaches. By the way, personally I am a bit of a girly girl who hates the idea of camping, creepy crawlies and outdoor plumbing etc. and I am so happy about how much I love it here. Everything is immaculately clean in the kitchen and bathroom and huts. The only dirt is the sand off your own flip-flops. In my two stays I saw 3 geckos, one praying mantis and Toin's friendly little dog Rex. That was all :) I will be back a third time and I am holding out for something exotic .......

I can't say more - but it is clearly a great testament to a host and her accommodation if a family of 3 come back to her again as soon as they can and spend that second visit planning their third. We can't wait ....

  • Had a fantastic long weekend at Toin's cabin. The place was clean, peaceful and friendly.

Toin went out of her way (about 5km to be precise) to guide us to the property when we neglected to properly read the directions - for future reference: read the description from Toin, don't trust the Airbnb address!

We only wish we were less busy with visiting family in the area, so we could have spent more time enjoying the place.

    Thanks again, till next time.

  • We had a fantastic time staying in the Wood Cabin! Toin was a lovely host, very helpful and full of great advice. The wood cabin was cosy and the kitchen was well equipped. There is a great fire pit for you to do some outdoor cooking and the gardens are lovely for some quiet contemplation. Rex the little dog will look after you whilst you drink your morning coffee in the sunshine! We would definitely recommend either the Wood Cabin or the Pixie Hut if you like being close to nature and away from the crowds. Thank you for a lovely holiday!

  • What travel dreams are made of! This place is so special and the energy was just perfect for us! The cabin is as pretty as the pictures, cozy and comfortable and decorated perfectly. The kitchen was the most well-equiped we've had with an airbnb experience, and again was so cozy and perfect. We had a fire almost every night, too! The bathroom was clean with plenty of hot water. Toin and her daughter were perfect hosts; very welcoming, accommodating and kind. We might come back to visit in the future!!

  • We were on one of those road trips where you open you life to new beginnings. Here we found not only a unique and magical setting in nature that allowed us to relax and study our "next steps" but also Toin and her family who made our stay so warm and fun.
Bring a good book to enjoy on a bench or the cozy cabin, a pair of tennis shoes to take long walks on the hills around the property and get ready to barbeque under the stars!

  • We had a really good time at Toins little paradise, the hut was very cosy and clean, the kitchen fully equipped, totally comfy and the start at night really amazing.
Toin and her family welcomed us very heartily and were helpful at many occasions.
As it's close to the motorway, it's easy to go everywhere at the Algarve quickly.
Thanks a lot - we would always come back!

  • The house: the location is really beautiful, perfect to relax completely and enjoy nature. We were in the wood cabin and it was really cosy and comfortable for a couple like us. The place is very romantic but there will probably be other people next to you in the other hut, so it's not very intimate but it can be nice to meet other people from over the world. The kitchen and bathroom are in common but with a little bit of organization this is not a problem.. they were well equipped and there was everything we needed, the only thing that was missing was a mirror..
We didn't have a car but we managed to go there with a lift by Marc, Toin's friend who lives there too and was very kind and helpful, he also took us to a supermarket and to the beach one day and offered us a beer.
We totally fell in love with the little dog Rex, he was so cute!! So I would highly recommend this place, for the beauty of the location and the kindness of the hosts!
