Louisburgh is a small rural town at the foot of the mountains and beside the Atlantic Ocean. Louisburgh people are hard working with a solid sense of community. There is a variety of Restaurants, Pubs, Craft shops, Post office, Library, Grainneuaile Heritage Centre and Church. Louisburgh and the surrounding area with its magnificent views and majestic mountains provide the perfect setting for a myriad of exciting things to do such as Sea fishing, Canoing, Surfing,, Swimming Kayacking, Boating, Walking, Cycling, Rock Fishing to mention but a few. There are lots of old roads for those who just want a safe and leisurely stroll....! For Horse Riding enthusiasts there is an indoor Equestrian Centre in Westport, about 18 Klms from our cottage. Prior booking would be required. Superb Surf Classes can also be arranged and that facility is just 5 minutes from here. There is also the wonderful Greenway Cycle Path all the way from Westport to Achill Sound.
There is Public Transport from Westport to Louisburgh by way of 2 buses per day, each way. Taxies and Bike Hire services are available in Louisburgh . Knock International Airport is approximately a 1 hour drive from my home and there is an Airport Bus to Westport. From there, it is possible to get a connecting bus to Louisburgh. Daily, there are 4 trains commuting between Dublin and Westport town, which is 20 minutes from here, and again, there are connecting buses from Westport to Louisburgh.
Other Things to Note
My cottage is approx 10 minutes from Roonagh Pier where ferries can take you on day trips to the beautiful Inish Turk and Clare Islands. There is an old Oak Wood situated on Old Head Beach...5 minutes from our home. Perfect for an early morning stroll. Indeed perfect for an anytime stroll.!! Approximately 10 minutes drive from here is Ireland's famous Croagh Patrick mountain, and a place of pilgrimage where many thousands come to climb and pray every year. The views from the summit are positively stunning. There is also the Doolough drive along the lake and through the mountains which is simply breathtaking.. This drive can take you into the Connemara National Park, and another experience not to be missed. A little further on is the famous Kylemore Abbey . This abbey is still in use as a private Secondary School. A visit to see its gracious walled gardens, walkways and Gothic church is a delightful experience. Nearer home, there is our famous and Historic Westport House. It is a most interesting place to visit. Then there is Achill Island with its many unspoiled villages and beaches and its famous Heritage Deserted Village sit. The island is a little over an hours drive from here and well worth spending some time there. Another place of interest is our National Museum of Country Life at Turlough House and is a 45 minute drive from our cottage. All of these picturesque and wonderful places of interest are within approx 1 to 2 hours drive from my cottage. How fortunate !!

A host like no other, Carmel made us feel like royalty. She welcomed us with tea and cookies upon arrival to partake in our very own charming, comfortable sitting room (offered in addition to our own bedroom and bathroom to use). We slept very well, and then opened the door to discover a breathtakingly beautifully laid out royal breakfast. Really special... but above all these elements of our experience are extensions of the old soul of the Carmel, herself. Thank you for such a memorable experience. Highly recommended!
Oh my dear Amber and Denis please allow to say the pleasure was very much mine. I was so delighted to meet you both and so wish we could have had a little more time together. Maybe you'll come back again so I can teach you to knit some good old fashioned socks!! Amber and Denis please know you're always welcome at my house!
Louisburgh is a beautiful part of the world and we were blessed with wonderful weather during our stay. Carmel is a charming lady who makes you feel right at home on arrival. Our room was fit for purpose and we had access to our own private bathroom. What really made our stay memorable was the breakfasts that Carmel prepared for us. A mixture of Irish and continental, the food was fantastic, which set you up for a good day's exploring. An outstanding host.
We had a great stay at Carmel's cottage and she made us feel very welcome. The rooms are what they look like on the pictures and we felt very comfortable for the 2 nights we stayed. The Cottage is a little bit outside Louisburgh and it's a very quiet place which we liked. Carmel provided us with a fantastic breakfast every morning for a great start into the day. Her little dog is super cute as well and you can expect a joyous welcome!
Staying with Carmel was wonderful! She was so kind and her directions were excellent. The room is very comfortable and private, and the breakfast in the morning was out of a five star hotel! She also gave us a great recommendation for dinner the evening we arrived. She was welcoming, generous, and fun to talk to, and we would highly recommend her home to anyone passing through this gorgeous section of Ireland!
Carmel is such a lovely person. We felt very welcome. The rooms are very nice and clean. Breakfast was fabolous and carmel gave us goos tips where to go. We would go there again every time.
What a lovely lady! Carmel was welcoming, charming and did her best to make us feel at home during our short stay. We were visiting for a wedding, so the lovely breakfast with home made bread certainly hit the spot the morning after! Would highly recommend, thank you!
What a wonderful experience! We stayed with Carmel for two days, and each of them was an utter delight. Carmel is the quintessentially ideal host--warm, kind, hospitable. Her cottage is lovely and the sitting room, bedroom and bathroom are charming, clean, and welcoming--a home away from home. Many other visitors have already commented on how good the breakfast was, but we must add our compliments to the mix--remarkable breakfast, as in, we kept remarking to each other the rest of the day how good it was. Carmel was respectful of our privacy but also happy to share with us her knowledge of lovely Louisburgh and the surrounding countryside--thanks to her recommendations, we ended up enjoying many unforgettable attractions we never would have visited otherwise. Still can't believe we paid such a low price for such a wonderful stay. We hope we can visit sometime again!
About the Host, Carmel
I'm a retired Restaurenteur with some spare energy. I live in a cosy cottage with a large wild garden just one mile outside the village of Louisburgh. I experiment with my garden which keeps me busy and confused all year round.!! I also dabble with paints and writing short stories. Reading is a great joy for me. Love the cinema and theatre whenever I have the opportunity to get to either !! But mostly I love gatherings with my lovely family and friends. Lazy walks on our pristine beaches and boreens (small roads !) in all weathers can be heavenly!! My motto is Live life 'One day at a time and make it a Masterpiece' !!
