The neighborhood

Louisburgh is a small rural town at the foot of the Meelree mountains and beside the Atlantic Ocean.

Louisburgh people are hard working with a solid sense of community.
There are Restaurants, Pubs, Craft shops, Post office, Library, Grainneuaile Heritage Centre and Church. Louisburgh and the surrounding area with its magnificent views and majestic mountains provide the perfect setting for a myriad of exciting things to do... Sea fishing, Canoing, Surfing,, Swimming, Kayacking, Boating, Walking, Cycling, Rock Fishing to mention but a few.
There are lots of old roads for those who just want quiet and leisurely strolls ...!
For Horse Riding enthusiasts there is an indoor Equestrian Centre in Murrisk and Westport, about 20 minutes from our cottage. Prior booking would be required.
Superb Surf Classes can also be arranged and that facility is just 5 minutes from our home.
There is also the wonderful Greenway Cycle Path all the way from Westport to Achill Sound. If you are a cycling enthusiast this cycle path is an awesome experience.

Getting around

There is Public Transport from Westport to Louisburgh by way of 2 buses per day, each way.
Taxies and Bike Hire services are available in Louisburgh .
Knock International Airport is approximately a 1 hour drive from my home and there is an Airport Bus to Westport. From there, it is possible to get a connecting bus to Louisburgh.
Daily, there are 4 trains commuting between Dublin and Westport town, which is 20 minutes from our cottage and again, there are connecting buses from Westport to Louisburgh.

Other things to note

My cottage is approx 10 minutes from Roonagh Pier where ferries can take you on day trips to the beautiful islands of Inish Turk and Clare.
The oldest Oak Wood in Ireland is actually situated on Old Head Beach...5 minutes from our home. Perfect for an early morning stroll... perfect for an anytime stroll.!!
Approximately 10 minutes drive from here is Ireland's famous Croagh Patrick mountain, and a place of pilgrimage where many thousands come to climb and pray every year. The views from the summit are positively stunning.
There is also the Dolough drive along the lake and through the Maelwree mountains which is simply breathtaking.. This drive can take you into the awesome Connemara National Park,
A little further on is the famous Kylemore Abbey . This abbey is still in use as a private Secondary School. A visit to see its gracious walled gardens, walkways and Gothic church is a delightful experience.
Nearer home, there is our famous and Historic Westport House. It is a most interesting place to visit.
Then there is Achill Island with its many unspoiled villages and beaches and its famous Heritage Deserted Village sit. The island is a little over an hours drive from here and well worth spending some time there.
Another place of interest is our National Museum of Country Life at Turlough House and is a 45 minute drive from our cottage.
All of these picturesque and wonderful places of interest are within approx 1 to 2 hours drive from my cottage. How fortunate !!

Carmel by her own definition was "old school" and by that meaning the most gracious hospitality and delicious breakfast. Carmel's home is comfortable and filled with books. She also gave us good tips on ways to spend a grey day, including the Museum of Rural Irish Life.

We had a fantastic weekend at Loisburgh. Carmel was a great host, she advised us on some really great places to eat as well as lots of things to do during the day. We didn't have time to visit everywhere we wanted to, as there is so much to see, so we will definitely visit again. Carmel advised us to visit an island called Achill Island, which I would recommend to anybody. It's a beautiful place with some incredible sights and scenery. She also makes a lovely breakfast! Thanks Carmel, we hope to see you again!

I'm a retired Restaurenteur with some spare energy. I live in a cosy cottage with a large wild garden and situated just one mile outside the village of Louisburgh. I experiment with my garden which keeps me busy and confused all year round.!! I also dabble with paints and writing short stories. Reading is a great joy for me. Love the cinema and theatre whenever I have the opportunity to get to either !! But mostly I love gatherings with my lovely family and friends.
My motto is to 'Live life One day at a time and make it a Masterpiece' !!
