Louisburgh is a small rural town at the foot of the mountains and beside the Atlantic Ocean. Louisburgh people are hard working with a solid sense of community. There's a variety of Restaurants, Pubs, Craft shops, Post office, Library, Grainneuaile Heritage Centre and Church. Louisburgh and the surrounding area with its magnificent views and majestic mountains provide the perfect setting for a myriad of exciting things to do such as Sea fishing, Canoing, Surfing,, Swimming Kayacking, Boating, Walking, Cycling, Rock Fishing to mention but a few. There are lots of old roads for those who just want a safe and leisurely stroll....! For Horse Riding enthusiasts there is an indoor Equestrian Centre in Westport, about 18 Klms from our cottage. Prior booking would be required. Superb Surf Classes can also be arranged and that facility is just 5 minutes from here. There is also the wonderful Greenway Cycle Path all the way from Westport to Achill Sound.
There is Public Transport from Westport to Louisburgh by way of 2 buses per day, each way. Taxies and Bike Hire services are available in Louisburgh . Knock International Airport is approximately a 1 hour drive from my home and there is an Airport Bus to Westport. From there, it is possible to get a connecting bus to Louisburgh. Daily, there are 4 trains commuting between Dublin and Westport town, which is 20 minutes from here, and again, there are connecting buses from Westport to Louisburgh.
Other Things to Note
My cottage is approx 10 minutes from Roonagh Pier where ferries can take you on day trips to the beautiful Inish Turk and Clare Islands. There is an old Oak Wood situated on Old Head Beach...5 minutes from our home. Perfect for an early morning stroll. Indeed perfect for an anytime stroll.!! Approximately 10 minutes drive from here is Ireland's famous Croagh Patrick mountain, and a place of pilgrimage where many thousands come to climb and pray every year. The views from the summit are positively stunning. There is also the Doolough drive along the lake and through the mountains which is simply breathtaking.. This drive can take you into the Connemara National Park, and another experience not to be missed. A little further on is the famous Kylemore Abbey . This abbey is still in use as a private Secondary School. A visit to see its gracious walled gardens, walkways and Gothic church is a delightful experience. Nearer home, there is our famous and Historic Westport House. It is a most interesting place to visit. Then there is Achill Island with its many unspoiled villages and beaches and its famous Heritage Deserted Village sit. The island is a little over an hours drive from here and well worth spending some time there. Another place of interest is our National Museum of Country Life at Turlough House and is a 45 minute drive from our cottage. All of these picturesque and wonderful places of interest are within approx 1 to 2 hours drive from my cottage. How fortunate !!

We graciously ask our guests to be respectful of our home.
Carmel not only met but anticipated all of our needs. She graciously picked my wife and me up from the bus stop in Louisburgh and had nibbles and tea waiting at home. (We arrived by bus; note that having a car would be the best way to experience this remote and beautiful area of Mayo). The home has traditional appeal along with completely modern furnishings, and we spent many hours reading in the luxurious private lounge/dining room. During our two-night stay, Carmel provided thoughtful conversation and travel advice, yet also left us in complete privacy in the lounge, which is reserved for guests and also doubles as a breakfast room. In fact, the best part about this B & B is the breakfast, which is served on the finest china and comprises home-made bread, an abundance of cheeses, fruit, yogurt, tea, jam, and honey. The breakfast has to be seen to believed and was a truly unexpected (and pleasant) surprise. Highly recommend.
Oh my goodness Sam may I say a very sincere thank you to you and Kaitlin for your lovely words and gracious appreciation of your time here at our cottage.. It really was a pleasure having you here and I'm so glad you choose to stay with us. You will always be welcome , anytime ! Carmel
We really enjoyed our stay at Carmel's home!
Carmel is very nice, very lovely, very attentive! We appreciate a lot her homemade breakfast, perfect to start a full day! We felt like at home! Of course, we highly recommand her !
Ah thank you both so very much for your kind words of appreciation. May I say how absolutely delightful it was meeting you and having you stay at my cottage. You would be most welcome back any time . Hope you had a great trip to the Aran islands and that you have a lovely time in Dublin!
Carmel is fantastic, very nice and warm. Breakfast is wonderful and delicious. Would have liked to stay more than one night!
A very warm and sweet welcome with a tea after my driving was just what we needed.
Carmel is a very nice and charming person. She makes you feel very welcome instantly. The house is just so cutely decorated. In the christmas season there was christmas decorations that were very nice. The warm blanket in the winter is just perfect for someone who is always cold like me.
I don't know what to say, everything was just extraordinary.
The breakfast was very good with fresh and testy products and even though we stayed only one night, we definitively had a wonderful time.
We had one of our best experience at Carmel's house. Everything was perfect, a warm greeting, a wonderful house and bedroom and the biggest and best breakfast you can have. Carmel is such a lovely person we regret we couldn't stay longer. Talking with her was a delight, and if you come in connemara just for one night, this is where you should stay.
Carmel was a fantastic host, She embodied the Irish hospitality, the knowledge of the unique country and the charming Irish way of life. Mayo area is famous for it's lakes and mountains and presents spectacular hiking and more. And still we found the people even more inspiring than the landscape. We'll go back for sure both to Mayo and to Ireland.
Carmel is one the sweetest, most accommodating ladies we have met in a while. Our room was very cozy and although you are sharing the house with her, you still feel like you have your own space with the separate sitting room and private bathroom. We would love to be a guest of Carmels again someday. She made our visit to Louisburgh even better.
I'm a retired Restaurenteur with some spare energy. I live in a cosy cottage with a large wild garden just one mile outside the village of Louisburgh. I experiment with my garden which keeps me busy and confused all year round.!! I also dabble with paints and writing short stories. Reading is a great joy for me. Love the cinema and theatre whenever I have the opportunity to get to either !! But mostly I love gatherings with my lovely family and friends. Lazy walks on our pristine beaches and boreens (small roads !) in all weathers can be heavenly!! My motto is Live life 'One day at a time and make it a Masterpiece' !!
