The Finca (farm) is situated within 1km strolling distance of the Blue Village of Júzcar, in the upper Genal Valley, South West of Ronda and North of San Pedro in Andalucía, Southern Spain.
The farmhouse has been restored with traditional features such as wooden windows and doors, tiled floors and chestnut roof beams. Accommodation provides for 15 people in six bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a fully equipped modern kitchen. The large open plan kitchen - living room, is an ideal social space for large family get-togethers, or groups of friends. All rooms have stunning countryside views. The outside terrace on the south and south west sides of the house is the perfect spot to wine and dine laze about and absorbed the Andaluz countryside and wildlife.
Across the valley, only 800 meters away (as the eagles fly) is the once traditional white village of Júzcar. The village was painted blue in 2011 for the arrival of the Smurfs (Pitufos), to promote the Sony Pictures “Smurfs in 3D” movie. What was intended to be a temporary stunt, turned out to be so popular, the population of 250 people voted to retain the colour.
Júzcar, is an ideal location to tour the local countryside. With its wildlife and flora, walking trails, history and culture, Júzcar is very interesting place. Local walks include “Los Riscos”, a limestone mountain range with unique rockery plants and fossils from beneath the Mediterranean. Amongst the warren of country tracks, ideal for walking and cycling is the track to the River Genal. Just 4k to the river, from late spring to early autumn, a charco (pool) at the bottom of the track is a great spot to visit for a cooling summer swim. There is also a small bar/restaurant on the shady river bank.
It is also well worth visiting the six neighbouring villages, each offering something different, such as the cathedral in Alpandeire. Just 45 minutes in opposite directions, you can visit the beaches of the Costa del Sol at San Pedro. Or for a completely different experience, a visit to the historic and famous City of Ronda is a must.
Other easy day-trips by car include: The Costa del Sol, Costa del la Luz, Cádiz, Jerez, Sevilla, Granada Málaga and Gibraltar. We are within 20 minutes is the Natural park of the Sierra Los Nieves and the Natural park of Grazalema, about an hour.
There are numerous excellent restaurants and typical country bars for tapas at your disposal.
For a laid back holiday with the friendliest, proudest folk in Spain, please visit as soon as you can.

The house was ideal for our purposes - an extended family gathering. We loved the house, the garden and the village - people were friendly and the housekeeper made us feel very welcome. We loved the fact that one side of the house opened out onto a village street (with a vibrant local bar) while the other provided a much more rural aspect, looking down to the valley of the Genal and up towards the mountains all around. The swimming pool was a major asset.
We had the pleasure of staying in Colm's beautiful villa in August. As a 'grown-up' family, space was a priority and we were not disappointed to find such a large and traditional interior and outdoor area. The winding mountain journey to Jubrique was breath taking and seemed never ending then tucked away in the middle of it all as a tiny white speck on the horizon our little village destination. Jubrique is one of three villages separated by rolling mountains and a 45min drive. The views were stunning and made us feel like we were a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of our busy lives. Mountain walks and natural lakes for swimming were all part of the package and easily accessed. Relaxing by the pool, sampling the delicious spanish produce, enjoying the views, and the alfresco dining all made it very difficult indeed to leave the comfort of Cortijo Retarta. Other than a trip to Ronda, (a must), and pottering up and down the maze of white buildings and narrow streets talking to the oh-so-friendly locals, there really wasn't much more we wanted from our 10 day trip...
We would all go back in a heart beat.
Thank you so much to Colm who was very helpful answering all our many questions before our trip and also to James and Ingrid - who were on tap to provide essential Spanish tips and knowledge of Jubrique and to Rory for supplying us with fresh produce from the garden and interesting stories and history of the area.
We hope to see you again!!
