The Space

We welcome you to come share our home with a lovely view of the San Francisco Bay. Our home is quiet, comfortable and impeccably clean. We have four bedrooms available, three with a comfortable queen size bed, and one with a full size bed. This room is upstairs and only accessible by an outside stairway. It has both a bedroom, with a queen size bed, and sitting room and work area with a desk and chair, so there is plenty of space. There is a full bathroom with shower/tub and double sinks inside the main house, and only needs to be shared if other guests are present. Our common areas include a well-stocked kitchen open for use, a comfortable living/ dining room, and a small patio and hot tub.

We are centrally located to just about everything the Bay Area has to offer. We are close to public transportation (3 blocks) and major freeways (phone number hidden)), as well as San Francisco (40 minutes), and San Jose (40 minutes). We are in Silicon Valley, and are 5 minutes from Oracle and Redwood Shores, 20 minutes from Stanford University, 20 minutes from SFO and 30 minutes from SJC airports. (We can at times arrange a pick from the airport- for a fee of $25.00). With a charming main street within walking distance San Carlos is known as the city of "Good Living". It’s full of restaurants, coffee houses, and boutiques and known to be a very safe place.

We are a multi-lingual house hold, wife (me) speaks Spanish and husband speaks basic Spanish and German. We eat healthy and exercise often and lead very busy lives, yet still find time to play tennis, run, and enjoy other outdoor activities. Care to join us? We have been hosting through this site for more than two and a half years and have enjoyed our time getting to know our guests and helping them out.

We will provide you with a simple breakfast with some organic items, as well as coffee and tea.. A washer and dryer are available if needed. A small cleaning fee is asked to help us with sheets and towels.

When you make a reservation, please tell us your full name and something about yourself and whoever will be joining you. Let us know what you are expecting in the way of accommodation, and how we help to make your stay more comfortable. If you stay for week, the 7th night is free; anything longer may have discounts as well!
We look forward to being your hosts.

Guest Access

Guests have access to the living room, dining room, kitchen, patio, and of course the bathroom. We have a piano for you to play, as well.

Interaction with Guests

Upon arrival, we give our guests a full tour of the house and the things we have to offer. Bob and Johanna are here to make sure you are comfortable and have things you need to feel welcomed. We live in the back of the house and do cook often. You can cook in our kitchen as well, we just might need to talk about timing.

The Neighborhood

Our home is located in a very safe area. Its an easy walk into the town of San Carlos and we encourage you to check out the great local restaurants and coffee houses.

Getting around

Public transport is ideal from our home, as mentioned above. We do have a bicycle we can lend you if you need it.

Other Things to Note

We have the bathroom stocked with shampoo, conditioner and shower gel, as well as Q-tips. Our breakfast offerings are really healthy and tasty. They include our homemade granola, fresh fruit, milks, juices, as well as an assortment of cereals and teas, and coffee. The top shelf of our refrigerator is devoted to our guests and their breakfast items. You can also store some items in our refrigerator if you need to.
There are two parking spots on our driveway for our guests.

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • This place is just okay. A few things not mentioned by the other reviewers include that check-in can only be after 6pm because Johanna cannot let you in until she meets the guests (in this case, my parents flying in after a 14 hour international flight) and give them a house tour. This was apparently communicated to me in an "previous" email that I never received both in my email account and via airbnb communication. Also, if you ever feel nostalgic about black-and-white TV, look no further and book this suite.

    Response from Johanna And Bob:

Mandy's Chinese speaking parents who stayed with us are delightful, unfortunately Mandy, who did not stay here, is not. For safety reasons, we are at home to meet every guest regardless of what time they arrive. We are working teachers, so we go to sleep at 10 p.m. and awaken at 5:15 a.m., but we accommodate our sleeping times to meet the needs of the guests. We also gave Mandy a tour so that all communications to her parents were clear, and Mandy agreed with all our rules. We are unaware of Mandy's claim of a missing text but that is through AirBnB, not us. As for the TV, the previous guest switched the color off using the wrong remote, and this is now switched back to color. It is a fully functioning, 4 month old flat screen color TV. Mandy's enjoyable parents never mentioned through simple language, or through Mandy, that the color was off. Regarding the bathroom, Mandy's parents were always the first to use the bathroom, and we know this because each morning while eating our early breakfast we greeted both of them, and no one was in the bathroom before them. It is always better to communicate any issue that arises, and previous guests have always found us to be responsive to their requests.

  • This was such a nice place. It definitely had the feel of an old-style bed and breakfast. The room was detached, and located above the quarters where the owners slept.

The house is located between San Francisco and San Jose. That makes it equally convenient to both places, or if you're a pessimist, equally inconvenient.

Overall, Joanna and Bob were very helpful, and provided a great experience.

  • Stay with Johanna and Bob was positive, and we can recommend their lovely house to adults, but definitely not to families with small kids due to the restricted access to kitchen and bathroom. Overall experience was positive because it was our dream to travel to California.

  • I recently moved from Boston to the Bay Area to start a new job. I stayed with Johanna and Bob for my first four weeks while I searched for my own apartment. I couldn't have asked for a better place or hosts to welcome me to the west coast.

The place. Johanna and Bob have a wonderfully furnished house, that is very clean and comfortable. Its a few minutes walk to downtown San Calros, with plenty of coffee shops and restaurants. I had everything I needed: laundry in the garage, a parking spot, iron, towels, and fresh bed sheets every week.

The hosts. Johanna and Bob were very welcoming and pleasant. I felt very comfortable in their house and enjoyed all my interactions with them.

Overall. I strongly recommend Johanna and Bob as hosts - I would definitely come back if I needed another place.

  • I stayed in the upstairs suite for three weeks while I was completing an internship in the area and loved it! The place is clean and quiet. Johanna and Bob treated me like extended family -- they gave me access to the washer/dryer and kitchen (they also cleared a space for me in the fridge), provided shampoo/conditioner/shower gel, and let me borrow their bike for a few days. They also left out breakfast every morning, consisting of fresh fruit, OJ, coffee, tea, milk, cereals, assorted breads, homemade granola, hardboiled eggs, etc. -- that was always a wonderful start to the day. I didn't see them much because they left for work early and I came back from work late, but when I did see them and the other house guests I enjoyed our conversations.

The upstairs suite is nice because you have your own entry to your room -- you go up a set of stairs on the side of the house to get in -- which makes it very private. The one caveat to staying in the upstairs suite is that the bathroom is down the stairs and inside (also the only bathroom, so you share with the other house guests), but it is not far at all -- like going downstairs in a house, except the stairs are outside. It is also not completely soundproof (you can hear people talking/smell what's cooking downstairs through the air ducts), but that didn't bother me much.

  • Johanna and Bob are absolutely wonderful hosts. I stayed with them for almost a full month and I they were incredibly helpful and welcoming, always inviting me to take part in their celebrations and events, and offering very good advice as to what to do in the area. The room is very comfortable and clean, as is the rest of the house, decorated with very good taste and really cosy. Also, I really enjoyed the fantastic breakfast they provided every morning, which included different types of bread and cereals, very good coffee and even amazing homemade granola. If you are in the area and need a nice place to stay, I wouldn´t hesitate!

  • It was a pity I had no enough time to spend with Johanna and Bob!
They are wonderful hosts, taking care of you and helping in what you need.
My room was comfortable and clean, like everywhere in the house.
It' s also very close to the Caltrain train stop to/from S. Francisco (10 min walking).

We are two teachers who have grown children that are now out on their own, out of the house. We have a comfortable and simple home to invite others to enjoy. We are very active playing tennis, running and exercising, cooking gourmet meals and traveling. We have traveled extensively all over the world and have lived abroad as well. Johanna loves to travel in Spanish speaking countries and Bob enjoyed teaching English in China. Johanna speaks fluent Spanish and Bob enjoys speaking basic Spanish and German. Bob is now studying anthropology and Johanna hopes to become a professional chef after teaching. Bob is an avid reader, especially history, and Johanna loves Latin music . Since we have stayed often in Bed and Breakfasts, we know its important to have privacy as well as simple comforts and nice accommodations. We are new to this idea of opening our home to others but AirBnB comes recommended.
