LOCATION / THINGS TO SEE:
Our home is located in a historic neighborhood in Elgin, IL. We are 30 miles west of Chicago, 40 miles west of Lake Michigan, 3 miles from highway 90 and even closer to route 20. Our Metra station is one mile away and provides direct access to Union Station and several surrounding Chicago neighborhoods.
In the opposite direction, several local farms, markets, orchards, and a surprisingly great winery are between 10 and 20 miles away.
If you're more interested in what Elgin itself has to offer, we're just a few blocks from downtown and would be glad to share our list of recommendations for restaurants, breweries, and entertainment.
Judson University, Elgin Community College, Gail Borden Library, and the Hemmens Auditorium are all within five miles of our place, and Woodfield Mall, IKEA, AMC theatres, the Sears Centre, and Medieval Times are just a bit farther (along with a plethora of even more unique and delicious spots to wine and dine).
We have a short-hair female cat named Charlie, but she is not allowed in the guest room or bathroom and will leave you alone once you've been properly introduced.
HISTORY AND GUEST ROOM
Our place was built in the late 1800's which means it has lots of character and charm. Fortunately, it's also been updated since then with handy things like a toasty furnace and central air. Our guest room is in a private corner of the house and has windows in two walls so it gets lots of sunshine. It holds a full-sized bed, and we store a twin mattress underneath it, which is also available for guests. The room is connected to a private bathroom, complete with a vintage cast-iron tub. (The shower is in the shared bathroom a few feet down the hall.) Unfortunately, we are not set up to host young children at this time.
We offer a continental breakfast each morning. We have highspeed wireless Internet throughout the house, and a Roku for T.V.- and movie-viewing. Our washer and dryer are available for guest use, as well as home-made laundry detergent. Our fridge is available is you have food to keep cool. Parking is street side, and the streets are wide in our quiet, low-traffic neighborhood. Other amenities are linens and towels, soap, shampoo, hair dryer, lotion, space heater, box fan, and bath bubbles--perfect for the big, comfy, antique bathtub.
US AND FOOD ETC.
We spend a lot of time in the kitchen, cooking, eating, drinking, and socializing. We are avid vegetable gardeners, so a lot of time in the summer and fall is spent canning and freezing our surplus produce. Because of all this activity, our kitchen is not typically available for guests to cook in -- though we'd be happy to coordinate something under special circumstances.
Every morning starts with a pot of fresh-ground coffee, or a selection from our tea basket. If you're on the go we offer a continental breakfast, and if you've got time to linger, we can usually do hot breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. If you feel like a walk there is also a bakery a block away, and a great little diner two blocks down.
Let's see... what else should you know...?
We truly enjoy hosting and would love the chance to tell you all the things we appreciate about our little "city in the suburbs," as Elgin likes to call itself. Whether you're here for a college visit, a concert, the Fox Trot, a festival, or just an affordable place that's city/country-accessible, we'd be delighted to provide a cozy and comfortable place to be your home away from home.
Mandy and Dan are a wonderful couple. Dan greeted me when I arrived (early, as I tend to always be early) and showed me around the house. The guest suite is amazing! There was even a little Welcome sign. :) I met Mandy later that evening. Chatted with both for a little bit. I would love to have been able to spend more time chatting.
Everything about my stay and the house was amazing! The bed was super comfy and warm (I didn't need to use the space heater - hehehe). The house is in an older neighborhood which I can imagine would be wonderful to explore (in warmer weather).
I definitely would recommend staying with Mandy and Dan, if you are looking for something quiet and away from the city. I will be back, for sure! :)
Mandy and Dan are warm, friendly people, and they were gracious and generous hosts. The space they provided was clean, comfortable, and attractive. Their cat studiously minded its own business. Mandy and Dan provided us with a lovely spread for breakfast, including homemade bread and jam, both of which were outstanding. I would highly recommend staying with the Garcias.
Mandy and Dan were very nice to our overall experience . They did their best for us to feel comfortable during our stay to their place. They have suggestions and they were really helpful .
Very nice couple !
A delightful experience at Garcia's! Mandy thoughtfully communicated with us ahead of time in response to my questions. Their "older" home is easy to locate and situated in a neighborhood with lots of character. The guest suite is cozy, tucked in the rear of a two-story home that overlooks a small yard and streetscape. Dan and Mandy offered a great suggestion for us to get dinner downtown and we enjoyed a late afternoon stroll at Walton Island Park. Great price for a homey place to sleep! Would definitely stay here again!!
We really enjoyed staying with Mandy and Dan. We were there for a wedding and their place was in the perfect location (close to downtown Elgin). The house reminded me much of the house I grew up in so I felt very comfortable there. The room was perfectly clean and the continental breakfast was just what we needed before our long drive home. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer, but alas, our work scheduled did not permit that.
They are very friendly, very accommodating, and a true delight to spend time with. They give the freedom and space to interact as much or as little as you like. Wonderful space for a restful night!
Nestled in a lovely neighborhood of older homes, just a few short blocks from downtown Elgin, Mandy and Dan's proved to be a wonderful little spot for us to bicycle, fish and relax. Lazy time was spent on the front porch - a little slice of heaven - sitting in a rocking chair gazing out at the pretty little neighborhood or out exploring the area by bike or foot. We fit in two great bicycling trips plus some fishing and reading out along the Fox River. On our way out of town we stopped at the local farmer's market and vintage shop. Mandy and Dan are easygoing, accommodating and immensely flexible hosts with a warm, lovely, and inviting home surrounded by stately trees and an impressive vegetable garden. Schedules kept us from being able to interact a whole lot - both work plus Mandy is in culinary school - but we enjoyed the chats we squeezed in. We'd recommend them to others and would stay again if in the area!
Mandy and Dan are the best!! Fantastic, sweet and accommodating hosts with many interesting hobbies (art, music, canning, gardening - just to name a few). My friend and I had booked the Garcia's lovely room to stay in for 3 nights this summer (we were attending a wedding nearby), but unfortunately my friend became ill just before the trip and therefore I ventured forth - somewhat reluctantly - solo. Mandy and Dan went out of their way to make me feel welcome - over delicious coffee and Mandy's freshly baked muffins we chatted the mornings away - I felt as though I was staying with old friends!. They made great recommendations for me in Elgin - antiquing, bookstores and the local farmers market were total hits. Largely thanks to Mandy and Dan, my time in Illinois exceeded my expectations making it one of the unexpected highlights of my summer. I highly recommend staying with the Garcia's and will certainly be back if I'm in the area!!
I stayed with Dan and Mandy for just one night but as far as my experience is concerned they are very friendly people. The house is really beautiful and as shown in the pictures.
If ever going to Chicago again, I will surely stay with them and would recommend others as well.
Thanks guys! :)
