About this listing
Private room and attached bath in a quiet old neighborhood in Elgin, IL, featuring an antique tub and double bed with firm mattress. Wifi, Starbucks coffee, and free street parking. One aloof cat and two delightful creative-types on premises.
Our guest room is in a private corner of the house and has windows in two walls so it gets lots of sunshine. It holds a full-sized bed with a firm mattress and we store a twin mattress underneath it, which is available for a third guest for an up-charge. The room is connected to a private bathroom, complete with a vintage cast-iron tub. (Shower is in the shared hall bathroom.)
Starbucks coffee and Teavana tea are always available. We have wireless Internet throughout the house. Our fridge is available if you have food to keep cool. Parking is free and street side, and the streets are wide in our quiet, low-traffic neighborhood. Other amenities are linens and towels, soap, shampoo, hair dryer, lotion, space heater, box fan, and bath bubbles.
We spend a lot of time in the kitchen, cooking, eating, canning, and socializing. Because of all this activity, our kitchen is not typically available for guests to cook in -- though we are willing to coordinate under special circumstances.
We truly enjoy hosting and would love the chance to tell you all the things we appreciate about our little "city in the suburbs," as Elgin likes to call itself. Whether you're here for a college visit, a concert, the Fox Trot, a festival, or an affordable place that's city/country-accessible, we'd be delighted to provide a cozy and comfortable place to be your home away from home.

Interaction with Guests
One of us is always home to check in guests and get them settled. From there, we are in and out quite a bit as we work multiple jobs with early schedules, but we are usually available by phone or text.
Wide streets and big old houses make up our historic neighborhood. Friendly neighbors, welcoming community, free street parking. We are one mile from downtown Elgin and the train that runs to and from Chicago. Some bike and car traffic, and lots of dog-walkers.
Our home is located in a historic neighborhood in Elgin, IL. We are 30 miles west of Chicago, 40 miles west of Lake Michigan, 3 miles from highway 90 and even closer to route 20. Our Metra station is one mile away and provides direct access to Union Station and several surrounding Chicago neighborhoods.
In the opposite direction, several local farms, markets, orchards, and a surprisingly great winery are between 10 and 20 miles away.
If you're more interested in what Elgin itself has to offer, we're just a few blocks from downtown and would be glad to share our list of recommendations for restaurants, breweries, and entertainment in Elgin and the surrounding area.
Judson University, Elgin Community College, Gail Borden Library, and the Hemmens Auditorium are all within five miles of our place, and Woodfield Mall, IKEA, AMC theatres, the Sears Centre, and Medieval Times are just a bit farther (along with a plethora of even more unique and delicious spots to wine and dine).
The Metra station is one mile away and provides direct access to Union Station and several surrounding Chicago neighborhoods.
Other Things to Note
We have a short-hair female cat named Charlie, but she is not allowed in the guest room or bathroom and tends to avoid guests altogether.
One of our old-house quirks that is worth mentioning is the staircase to the second floor, which is slightly steeper than more modern counterparts (which we only realized when an older guest mentioned they were glad for the sturdy handrail).
1. No smoking inside, but there is an ashtray on the front porch.
2. If you'd like to have visitors, please let us know ahead of time so we're not surprised when they come knocking.
3. Check in and check out times can be flexible, but an estimated time of arrival is greatly appreciated.
4. Quiet hours are between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. on week days.
5. Our kitchen is not typically available for guests to cook in -- though we are willing to coordinate something under special circumstances.
6. Unfortunately, we are not set up to accommodate young children at this time.
7. We are fairly busy working multiple jobs with varying schedules between the two of us, so guests need to be rather self-regulating.
