Prettiest Neighborhood in New York

Apartment - Entire home/apt · Montague Terrace, Brooklyn, NY 11201, United States

The Space

This is a delightful treehouse of a one bedroom apartment on the top floor of a giant brownstone in Brooklyn Heights. The neighborhood is by far the prettiest in New York. The street is on the promenade, with striking views of Manhattan. It is the first stop in to Brooklyn from Manhattan so you will be closer to anything below 14th Street than you would be from anywhere in uptown Manhattan. The apartment itself is lovely and well appointed. It's about 750 square feet. One bedroom. Small, modern bathroom. Large living room/kitchen space. Big windows throughout. One downside is that it is on the 5th floor of a walk-up (no elevator) but it's really not that bad. I walk those stairs every day. Previous guests have noted the minuscule size of my bed. They were right. I have recently taken those suggestions to heart and bought a queen size bed with the most delicious mattress ever made.

  • This place was the perfect location! Quiet, beautiful and it had and amazing view of the Manhattan only a few steps away. Matt was a generous host that made sure we were comfortable in the city with transportation, restaurants and the sites of the city, he answered any questions we had right away and with genuine effort. Highly recommended!

  • This is a great apartment--clean and airy, comfortable in all regards. The stairs are well worth the climb. Matt is the perfect host, responsive and helpful on logistics, neighborhood and transportation. The neighborhood is lovely, right across from the beautiful Brooklyn Bridge Park, and an easy subway hop to Manhattan and other parts of Brooklyn.

  • Matt's delightful apartment gave my friend and me the chance to live the Brooklyn Heights vida loca, Edith Wharton-style. His gorgeous building is tucked into a tiny street of similarly breathtaking Gilded Age brownstones, steps from the Brooklyn Promenade and the new Brooklyn Bridge Park, the most scenic and romantic stroll east of Manhattan. Don't miss bouncing on the cool new Squibb Park pedestrian suspension bridge!

Nearby is charming Montague St. with its shops and cafés, as well as the leafy, walkable neighbourhoods of Cobble Hill, Boerum Hill, and Carroll Gardens. Brooklyn has a growing rep as a foodie hub: saunter along Smith and Court Sts. and sample the diversity of exciting food and beverage options offered by the many independent boutiques and artisanal food outlets.

Great access to transit is only a few minutes' walk, with Lower Manhattan a single stop away. Nearby, too, in downtown Brooklyn, is the TKTS booth, offering same-day Broadway and off-Broadway show tickets at discounts of up to 50%. Matt's place is spacious and quiet, especially by NYC standards, with all the bells and whistles. The bedroom was large and the bed extremely comfy. The bathroom is compact, but cute and functional, and I can vouch for the comfort of the large couch if you need extra sleeping space. Overall, definitely worth the climb up all those stairs!

We didn't get to meet Matt, who was travelling himself, but connecting with him was quick and easy, and our questions were speedily answered. He even encouraged us to tuck in to any food we found in his kitchen, including the two delicious kinds of ice cream in his freezer!

The best part of staying at Matt's—and of staying with AirBnB in general, in my opinion—is that it allowed us to briefly experience life in a neighbourhood that is otherwise inaccessible to tourists. You can walk in the steps of real New Yorkers, test-drive their lives, and glimpse their diversions, distractions, and even their frustrations. It's a way to experience the reality of a place vs. the brochure version, so thanks to AirBnB and to Matt for making it a possibility. À bientôt!

    Response from Matt:

Gracious! What a generous review! The Brooklyn Heights Association (and AirBnB) should hire you! Thanks Jane. It is much appreciated.

  • Great place to stay in Brooklyn Heights. Matt was a great host and communicated well. Apt was as described and location was perfect for us....close to everything we needed. One of the best views of the Manhattan skyline is only a few steps away. Only reason it is not a 5 star rating is the stairs....and as long as those aren't an issue for you, I would highly recommend it.

    Thanks Rich!

  • Matt's apartment was great, so spacious for NYC standards! Clean and very well put together with all the amenities of home, only his bed is way better the mine!

  • What a great location! Matt's apartment is only about half a block from the promenade on the East River with its stunning views of Manhattan and south to the Statue of Liberty. It's also an easy walk to shops, restaurants, and the subway into Manhattan. Matt is also a most welcoming, solicitous, and responsive host. He was very kind to offer that we might help ourselves to any food in the refrigerator. The apartment is comfortable and spotlessly clean if a bit spartan. The bed mattress is fantastic. Potential guests should be aware that this is a fifth-floor walkup. We didn't mind the stairs--we actually enjoyed the exercise--but some other guests might feel differently. All in all, should our travels bring us back to Brooklyn, we would certainly stay here again.

  • Everything in the description is true. The apartment is comfortable and very tasteful with real paintings on the walls. The radiator heater works extremely well, expect to need only a t-shirt while watching the full range of cable choices on the large flat screen while surfing the net with blazing fast wifi! Best sleep ever on the superb queen bed. Matt is a great host, generous, funny and straightforward. He is a genuine example of the true spirit of airbnb, prompt response to emails and quick to offer vital local information. We made a new friend!

  • Great location and charming + safe neighborhood. Good choice of subway lines to Brooklyn Heights, but if you prefer cabbing from Manhattan to get back home late at night like we did, expect to pay just under $20 incl. tip.

Matt was a great host, and was generous with his time and advice (and even though we never met, organization was never a hassle).

Hi. I'm from Philadelphia originally but have lived in New York for many years. I've also lived in Washington, London, Paris and Geneva. I've hosted through Airbnb several times and been a guest several times too. It's a great service.
