The space

Surrounded by trees and the beauty of the rural Irish countryside, our comfortable wooden house is kept warm in winter by the wood burning stove, and cool in summer with patio doors opening onto a lovely wrap-around deck. Here you can sit and listen to the cuckoo, watch the swallows and hear the wind rustle through the scots pine and walnut tree. Great for couples, groups (sleeps 4 comfortably) and families. Comfortable, spacious living-room. Adjacent kitchen fully equipped with table (seats 6), gas cooker with oven, fridge etc. Main bedroom has comfortable double bed, and second bedroom has ikea bunk-bed's, double on bottom (can fit two children) and single on top. Shower-room with electric shower. All bed linen and towels provided.

Guest access

The Chalet is situated in the grounds of Clarkwood House where we live with our family, dog and rabbits, but the accommodation is completely separate, secure and private with ample parking for 2 cars. Guests are welcome to enjoy our spacious garden and children are welcome to try out the swings and play in the garden.

Interaction with guests

Guests will be received by myself or my husband who will be delighted to acquaint visitors with the highlights of the area. Continental breakfast can be provided as an optional extra. With advance notice supper can be arranged.

The neighborhood

This is a fantastic place to unwind, with wonderful walks and lakeland scenery at your doorstep and easy access to the range of heritage sites and tourist attractions in the locale. For those interested in history and archaelology, we are 20 minutes from the ancient megalithic tombs at Carrowkeel, 10 minutes from the pre-historic Portal Dolmen known locally as the Labby Rock and 5 minutes from the mythical battle site of Moytura, the plain of the pillars. For families, Lough Key Forest Park can't be beaten with lake trips, zipwires, tree canopy walks and the compulsive boda borg. Sligo and the seaside (Rosses point or Strandhill) is a half an hour away and the recently opened Lissadell House and Gardens (forty minutes away) is well worth a day trip.

Getting around

Car transport is really essential for getting around this part of the country. However, should you arrive by train into Boyle or Carrick on Shannon you can be collected and brought back for a small fee.

Other things to note

We don't charge for children under 2 .

Our garden also has swings and a slide.

The nearest village (Ballyfarnon) is five minutes by car or an hours walk with a decent local supermarket (Killorans) and a couple of pubs. The nearest pub in the other direction is Des Mc Donaghs, on the way to Castlebaldwin. Our favourite hostelry is the Mayfly located in the pretty village of Ballinafad with a wonderful view of Lough Arrow. Should you be in the mood for pampering yourself then head to the wonderful spa and seaweed baths at Cromleach Lodge Hotel. The alternative is the swimming pool and spa which is part of the four star facilities offered by the luxurious Kilronan castle located just before Keadew, home of the ancient harper O'Carolan. Great area for writers, close to McGahern country in the Leitrim direction and a half hour from Yeats country in Sligo.

I moved here to Sligo with my family over 6 years ago for a better quality of life and we really love where we live. Would describe myself as sociable and really interested in people. My husband and I have always been very involved with the arts so we enjoy good conversations about art, literature film and politics. The Saturday Guardian is one of the highlights of my week but regrettably, I don't always have the time or the patience to cook all those recipes that I keep cutting out. I cook great soup, French Onion, Roasted Red Pepper and Cassoulet are amongst my specialities! I have lived in Belgium and Holland so can still converse in French though my Dutch needs a little brushing up. Can't live without literature and music but have put off 'War and Peace' for the last ten years. Now ready to embark on this great literary adventure. Would welcome conversations on same with any airbnb guest with an interest in Tolstoy. Despite some 'highbrow' tastes I also have a passion for popular fiction; I just finished Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's 'Americanah', riveting.
