About This Listing
Beautiful apartment with screened lanai, 2 blocks to the beach & the oceanside walk/bike path. Right in town but a world away! A Hawaiian experience with custom design features. Many restaurants, stores and banks within easy walking distance.
Whether you are visiting Kauai for a few days, a few weeks, or even a few months, this charming apartment surrounded by tropical vegetation and whimsical statues and art objects will quickly make you feel settled and “at home’. It’s part of a small and friendly residential community full of Aloha spirit. You can arrive, move in, unpack and unwind -- or head straight to the beach.
The price includes Hawaii State's so-called transient accommodation tax of 13.4% -- most hotels and condos charge that on top of the quoted rate. And there are no "extras" you have to pay -- no “amenity fees,” no resort fees, no fees for the wi-fi (it's free), no “energy” fees, no parking fees – no kidding.
The apartment is ideal for two people. It’s compact but cute and comfortable - fully furnished and equipped, and artistically decorated with granite counter top, etched glass mirrors, indirect lighting, and marble floor inserts that will remind you of Italy.
The kitchen, living room/dining area are open-plan with plantation shutters on the windows, a ceiling fan and (if you need it) an air conditioner. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped with dishwasher, microwave, full-size refrigerator, blender, coffee-maker, toaster, and cooking equipment.
The bedroom has a queen-size bed, a ceiling fan, large dresser and closet with hangers. Off the bedroom is a private screened-in lanai (porch) with a rocking chair and a filtered view of Nonou (Sleeping Giant) Mountain. The en suite bathroom has a stall shower and art tiles on the floor.
The Immediate Neighborhood:
The apartment community has a unique ambiance. There’s an outdoor table and stone seats near the entrance among the trees where you can relax, drink coffee, or sit and chat with other residents. There’s a gazebo, barbecue facility, and open space in the field adjacent to the property.
Several washers and dryers are on site. Off-street parking is available for your use.
As you may know, the entire island of Kauai has an abundance of roosters and chickens, and they love hanging around near the property. (The chickens and roosters tend to crow at odd hours during the night. Some people sleep right through it, others say they get used to it after 1-2 nights. We can't do anything about the roosters' body clocks, but we do provide our guests with hermetically sealed packages of earplugs for sleeping!) Some find the chickens and roosters charming; others find them annoying; but they are a fact of life in Kauai.
It’s the largest city on the island, although it is a “village” compared with any major mainland city. Kapa’a is centrally located, friendly and picturesque - as noted by recent articles in the Garden Island newspaper, Forbes magazine and the Huffington Post). At a pinch, you could get around without a car – walking, biking, or using the local bus service - but a car is important for real exploration at your own pace.
You can walk to many stores, the Kapa’a post office, banks, pharmacies, Big Save supermarket, Cost U Less (a Pacific Rim mini-warehouse store), the beach, and restaurants. Kapa’a has numerous specialty and ethnic restaurants & cafes in all directions -- including seafood, burger places, coffee houses, food carts, Thai, Mexican, Czech and Indian restaurants - as well as local Hawaiian cuisine.
The Island of Kauai:
There is no shortage of guidebooks and good Internet resources describing this piece of Paradise – but you are invited to relax and discover Kauai at your own pace: “Slow down – this ain’t the mainland”. After you book, we provide you with local recommendations of neighborhood places to eat and shop and activities on Kauai's eastside.
Our delightful and energetic manager Milan is assisted by Ida who lives on-site. Both are originally from Slovakia – so if you want to practice your East European language skills, here is your opportunity. With Milan’s and Ida’s help we have managed this apartment for many years. One of them will greet you when you arrive and show you the apartment, the laundry facilities, the gazebo/barbecue, and the bicycles available for your use on the oceanside bike path. They will be available during your stay by phone or e-mail to answer any questions. Otherwise you will have the place entirely to yourself. We don’t disturb you (unless you have a problem), and we don’t put a chocolate on your pillow.
Kapa’a is about 8 miles north of Lihu’e airport. After you have made your reservation, we will give you specific directions for finding this apartment since it’s well hidden.
For days when you want to sightsee, you can drive easily to the north and south shores of Kauai. When you just want to relax, swim, or body-surf, you can walk to the closest beach (Kapa’a Beach Park) which is a beautiful crescent-shaped stretch of sand and good for swimming since it's protected by an offshore reef. Fuji Beach - also known as "Baby Beach" has shallow calm water and tidepools - great for young children to splash in. Or you can drive a short distance to Lydgate Park or Kealia Beach. Those are good nearby eastside beaches. But be careful -- Kauai is not the languid Caribbean - there are strong waves and potential rip tides at some beaches.
Don’t miss the Kapa’a walk/bike path – Ke Ala Hele Makalae, the “The Path that Goes by the Coast” – there is a great 5-minute video on the web (hint: search Vimeo….). We have a selection of bikes available (see photo) that you can borrow and ride - at your own risk - for the entire 8-mile round trip to the far end of the paved path and back.
Enjoy the experience of staying in Kapa’a, close to everything - but away from it all!
The fine print:
• Check-in after 3:00 pm, check-out by 11:00 am. Depending on your flight schedule, we can usually arrange earlier check-in (11:00 am) and/or late checkout (7:00 pm) for a small fee.

• And Please:

- No parties or loud noise -- except near the gazebo at the far end of the grounds.
- Don't feed or encourage the wild chickens or feral cats!
Our stay at the garden apartments in kauai was the end of the tail of our one month roadtrip and we loved it! Everything went well with the checking in and the apartment is very clean and there were even some cereals, fruits and drinks, which was great as we didn't have to go grocery shopping at the day of our arrival. The grocery store is very clise though so that would have been a problem. We made good use of the bikes which we could use for free and rode the bike trail at the beach. We even could rent a kayak and they would drop you off and pick you up at the spot where you could paddle & hike to the (not so) secret waterfall! We loved our stay! Thank you to all the lovely people who helped us out and made our stay so perfect!
Didn't get a chance to meet Margaret but she had onsite staff who were very nice. Ida, Arnold, Aido, and Milan were very welcoming.
Studio was very clean and had everything we needed. Good wifi and AC unit.
The only issue we had was the construction outside our unit. They were building a patio which we were not informed. Work didn't start around the later morning but it didn't feel as private because we knew people were directly outside. The occasional saw and hammer didn't fit too well with the Hawaii vibe either. If you plan to stay I would ask if there is any construction going on.
We stayed in this wonderful Apartment for one week and we loved it!
Everything is clean and lovely arranged, we found all the things we needed (towels, hairdryer, full Kirchen equipment and even bikes)!
There was someone available at all time if we had questions!
Margret, thank you for the stay in your beautiful Apartment on this great Island!
We definetly recommend it and will come back! Tobi and Laura
Our experience here was wonderful. When we arrived there were refreshing drinks in the refrigerator, gluten free granola, and fresh fruit. The accommodations were clean and accurately described. Well worth the investment!
Margaret sends an email complete with directions of who to contact, places to eat, things to do etc. She leaves no stone unturned.
I was a little nervous when I first noticed it was right off the main road, but it turns out that it's far enough back to give you a quiet island feel, and close enough for easy access to eateries and the bike path along the ocean. They also provide bikes which is a wonderful addition! They are not in great shape, but it doesn't really matter because the land is flat and it gets you to where you need to go- For FREE! Thank you and the other host there for all of your help and the great accommodations.
We had a wonderful time at the cottage. The setting is wonderful, very close to beach, shopping, walking path and more. The cottage is very cute and comfortable with great decor. The hosts made us feel very welcome and comfortable, including providing some free local snacks upon our arrival! We hope to come back some day :)
We stayed for 7 nights beautiful little bungalow, with many ammenties we were centrally located on the island so we were able to see it all. Very cute and tucked away you don't even realize it's back here. There was one opportunity that was the large potholes in the drive way to get to the bungalow. The outside appearance is a little rough but once you are inside it is beautiful. All in all very nice place to stay.
This was a wonderful spot to land on Kauai! Our plane arrived 5 hours late and Ida's husband was there to greet us after dark and show us our apartment. It was stocked with fresh fruit, yummy locally made granola, milk, coconut milk, and coffee for the morning. Ida and her family were so sweet and helpful, and we really enjoyed getting to use the loaner bikes to ride on the path. The apartment was clean, artistically done, comfy bed, and very conveniently located! We're so glad we stayed here!

About the Host, Margaret
There is no place on earth quite like Kauai for natural beauty, outdoor activities, and the relaxed tropical island way of life (the Aloha spirit). My husband Jack and I enjoy the eastside bike path where you can cycle, walk, or jog traffic-free for 4+ miles (8 miles round-trip), and taking the dog for a walk by the ocean. We love travel, but we love staying home too. Since Airbnb came into existence, it’s possible to do both at the same time. We offer you a fully furnished tropical Hawaiian-style apartment as your “home from home” during your vacation, in a friendly community – right in town yet away from it all – close to beaches and attractions but with local ambiance.
Yes, Burger King... It's the closest eating place, air conditioned, and it has pretty good smoothies and coffee as well as the normal burgers and fries.
A warehouse-type store, Cost-U-Less has a number of locations in the Pacific (other islands, Guam). It's a bit like a CostCo -- also based in Seattle -- but with a more limited selection. Good value
You must try -- at least once -- a local plate lunch. Go early as it's very popular and sells out early.
Crescent-shaped beach, good for swimming -- it's protected from large waves by an offshore reef. The beach is beautiful and always surprisingly quiet.
Fantastic ice cream in many tropical flavors (love the ginger!) Proprietor Dan is there most of the time and will "talk story" with you while scooping your frozen dessert.
Excellent sushi place in an interesting courtyard location. Live music most nights.
All natural, organic, healthy foods -- including many GMO-free. Limited selection of good fresh vegetables, island-baked breads.
It sells the same items as any Safeway on the mainland, plus a few local specialties.
An authentic Indian restaurant in the middle of a Kapa'a shopping center. The food is good, and they serve a buffet dinner on Wednesday evenings.
Good locally owned supermarket with many island specialties including a wide selection of Poke (Hawaiian-style sashimi) and international foods. You can get Naan bread here sometimes.
Every Wednesday 3:00 - 5:00 pm. Locally grown fresh fruits and vegetables, including many exotic tropical items and ice cold coconuts - you can drink the juice with a straw!
Upscale open-air resort bar & restaurant by the ocean. Try pupu's and happy hour in the late afternoon. Make sure it's a Wednesday to hear Aldrine Guerrero, a high-energy ukulele player.
Wahoo (with 2 o's) is another name for a delicious Hawaiian fish called ono. They have an outdoor patio with live music Thurs/Fri/Sat (jazz on Thursdays). Good pupus, salad bar, casual & fancy fare.
The blue house by the canal -- good coffee, carefully prepared breakfast, lunch and evening pupu's with wine & cocktails. Free internet.
The oceanfront view is simply stunning. Good food (ample quantities!) and attentive service. Sometimes they have live music in the evening.
This is a wonderful free public pool right by the ocean in Kapa'a, including showers and changing rooms. Highly recommended for lap swimming Check the opening hours on the notice posted by the
An old-established Kauai ice cream created originally by Walter Lappert (the Hanapepe ice cream man). Good stuff -- it's available many places on the mainland too.
Kapaa bike/hike path. An incredible ocean bluff trail, 8 miles round trip. Traffic-free except for bikes & skateboards. At the north end, hike further on dirt trails & explore secluded beaches.
Great gym! Keep fit in air-conditioned comfort. Very clean new machines, good classes, friendly staff, TVs & wi-fi. Monthly rates. You can also use their branch in Nawiliwili (by the harbor).
The best (and only) luau I've ever been to. Fantastic setting by the river, good food, efficiently served, and a show after dark by the lagoon. A very memorable evening!
